Thanks Joe for the great job you've done broadcasting Coyote men's basketball and football the last 8 years!! Congratulations on your semi-retirement and best wishes on your future endeavors! You will be missed!

Sorry to see Joe go. He was pure Coyote through and through. I'll miss what one might call his "overenthusiastic" calls, but he was fun to listen to and had a voice that became associated with USD athletics. All the best in the future JVG.

I agree, I felt we were lucky to have him. I really liked listening to JVG call a game (basketball more than football).

While I will miss JVG on the call, I will not miss using initals instead of the player's name, ie. TP instead of Tyler Peterson, TBM, etc.

I appreciate his time here, but it was time for a change. Trying to listen to a game with him was painful and sometimes hard to figure out what was actually happening in both basketball and football. IMO it is a major upgrade moving to Thayer and USD is better for it.

I hope Joe enjoys a much deserved break. Just reading his bio wears me out (though I did not realize his time calling USD games was basically limited to the last 8 years). He is such an engrained figure in the community and surely this won't be the last any of us see of Joe.
I'm glad Thayer stuck around and is getting a bigger opportunity here. I've thought for many years that he could land this type of job elsewhere if he wanted to.

That is HILARIOUS. Great job on keeping it light. Best wishes to Joe and congrats to John. I would suggest we all stay positive in our comments regarding individuals in this move as we need to look forward and not backward. It serves no purpose to criticize or find fault with a situation that change has been made. I personally want to thank Joe for his service and the passion he had. No one can say he didn’t have passion regardless if you liked his style or not. I also will say I think John has a chance to be truly outstanding. My hope is he will be just that.

most in paticular JVG and Culver were simply painful to listen to for football. Luckily with midco and elson i didnt have to listen to it often. Both meaning JVG and Culver were classic high school level announcers announcing at a D1 level. Way above where they should have been. I hope Culver is out to. Both are like 80's wishbone style announcers in a modern spread offense era. 40 years behind the times. Thayer is not bad and not great. USD can do better but that has been the case for years with the choice of announcers. Why does USD settle for mediocre so often in this area. i would take culhaine or fredrik or is it frerickson over any of the recent guys.

How do you really feel Coyote Fan? You basically called out all of the University's choices for announcers as mediocre or poor in recent memory. It shows your true colors. I love that the only one you like announces for the BI-Son!!! Interesting!!!

Thayer will be great. I've really enjoyed listening to him do WBB games. He is entertaining as a color guy, and keeps up really well on the play-by-play. Radio does a good job of exposing poor PBP announcers, and allowing good ones to shine. I thought Joe was fine, but John will be excellent.
Disagree if you like but I have found both guys to be a little homerish, which certainly doesn't bother me, but irritates the heck out of sensitive Jacks fans. And that's fine. Most game announcers hired by a University are a little homerish toward the school that hired them. That's normal.
The problem comes when fans that are used to hearing homerish called games hear a more objective broadcast from unaffiliated announcers, and cry that they are being biased against them. Like when Jacks fans go after any of the Midco sports guys. Those guys and gals do an outstanding job of being objective, and we are lucky to have that kind of coverage locally IMHO.

Good vs bad announcers and homerish vs not homerish announcers are not necessarily synonymous comparisons. In a normal summer I would be listening to a lot of baseball games on Sirius XM, which means listening to the home team's announcers. In recent years I have thought that the White Sox and Tigers had announcers that would have been below average in the NAIA. The Yankees, who I despise, on the other hand.have John Sterling and Suzyn Waldman, two of the best in the business, and also two of the homerish in the business. As a Jacks fan, I don't care who calls your games, or how good or bad they are. I can't think of a reason I would be listening to your broadcast.

I know lots of Jacks fans that do, though. I occasionally listen to or watch Jacks games. I'd watch more if there wasn't a fee for streaming your home games.
