The Men's USD segment (some quotes):
Tom N: Some teams get hit hard with graduation, South Dakota got clobbered. 5 of their top 6 players gone.
Brad N: Yeah. Look at how much scoring they lost. Over 70% of their scoring. More importantly, over 70% of their minutes. They just don't have a lot on this roster that's experienced playing for Todd Lee and his system. They brought in a lot of new guys.... How well will that group gel with what they have coming back?

Recent "Reach the Summit" podcast reviews the Men's teams with recent close losses to high-major teams, and previews the Dakota Showcase: LINKThe USD section starts at 37:30 A couple of summarized points: - Umude and A.J. have established themselves as known commodities, need to figure out other roles. - Umude is leading scorer, but FG% is bad, so need to have him take better high-percentage shots. - Umude might be better playing closer to the basket, in a forward role. - Umude is getting to the line and converting well. He also doesn't turn the ball over much. - Lots of players are getting minutes, so they are probably seeing who rises to the occasion. Need to establish a top 6 or 7.

Fun observation - both of the SDSU/WIU games were fairly close (I expected full blowouts). So I checked WIU's box score - I do not recognize a single name. I vaguely remember a bunch of tranfers after the coach was fired, but it looks like literally everyone left. Pretty wild.

After 2 weeks
NDSU (4-0) They get so many wins in games that maybe they don't deserve to win or don't really play what seems like is their best. That is what they do though is just play kind of ugly and pull it out in the end.
South Dakota (4-0) Considering how the non conference went, what a surprise this is to see the Coyotes tied for first place. AJ and Stan are just amazing basketball players.
SDSU (2-0) They had one close one and one blowout against the Leathernecks. It seems like the team is just kind of playing so-so basketball, maybe not clearly the best team in the league as some may have thought. But they are obviously a big threat to win the league.
Oral Roberts (3-1) They are off to an impressive start and took it to UND on Saturday and the Hawks showed they can be pretty good.
North Dakota (2-2) A big win in Tulsa gives them a nice road win to start the league. That makes up for the bad home loss against Kansas City
Kansas City (1-3) After looking good in Grand Forks and stealing a win they lost 2 close ones to the resurgent Coyotes this weekend. KC might be a lower to mid pack Summit team but they are gonna cause problems for some teams that think they will just walk through them.
Denver (0-2) Coming off a bye they have yet to be in a close league game yet and not to their liking. Can they actually make a run for the worst team in the league. It is possible.
Western Illinois (0-4) Probably deserve a win in there somewhere but 0 for 4 is 0-4 anyway you look at it. Started against possibly the best 2 teams in the league.
Omaha (0-4) have they regressed the most over the past couple of years of any other Summit program. It is starting to look like it. They have started with ORU and NDSU so not an easy go of it.

TEAM CONF GB OVR South Dakota 7-0 - 9-6 South Dakota Sta 4-0 1.5 10-3 North Dakota Sta 8-1 - 10-7 Oral Roberts 6-2 1.5 9-7 North Dakota 4-5 4 5-13 UM Kansas City 2-5 5 6-10 Omaha 0-5 6 2-13 Denver 0-6 6.5 1-12 Western Illinois 0-7 7 2-12
Standings as of right now. Question - If the tourney was today, what are the seeds? How does the SL rank teams with unequal number of games played?

I see NDSU only beat KC by 4 last night and KC was without several top players. It’s almost like it’s harder to win road games...for the “USD hasn't beat anyone good in league” crowd.

I’d guess they seed based on winning % , same as usual. Not perfectly fair with no round robin schedule, but probably better than a cancelled basketball season.

Said crowd isn’t really in a position to talk about beating anyone, as they’ve only played 4 league games. The least in the conference.

NDSU went down in game 2 vs KC. So now NDSU and ORU both have 2 conference losses basically playing the same teams that the Coyotes went undefeated against. So basically the Coyotes are in good position for the 2 seed if they can just split their home series with both NDSU and ORU. Not guaranteed but it would be tough for either to make up 2 games elsewhere on the Coyotes. Not that they can't be in the mix for the #1 seed but I am leaving SDSU out of it for now as that is another discussion. The Roos are kind of the team I look at for comparison sake. They won one at ORU and one at home to NDSU. The Coyotes swept both games down at their gym in KC which is really looking big right now. What that does is makes it very difficult for either to finish ahead of the Coyotes without sweeping them in Vermillion.
OK lets bring the Jacks into it. I believe the Coyotes based on games played and location of remaining games are looking pretty darn good for the 1 seed if they can split at Frost. The Jacks still have to play at ORU and at NDSU. Any losses for them will hurt their percentage more than it will hurt the Coyotes to have a loss. Nothing is fair with the new covid world but it also isn't fair that the Coyotes to have to play 2 in Brookings so there take that Jacks fans.

Standings after the weekend: South Dakota 9-1 South Dakota State 5-1 North Dakota State 9-3 Oral Roberts 7-3 North Dakota 5-7 UM Kansas City 3-5 Western Illinois 3-7 Denver 1-7 Omaha 0-8
Here's the math on a path to SL championship. Note I only looked at each team in isolation.
SDSU - Yotes can lose a game whenever SDSU loses a game and still be #1 seed. But math magic happens if SDSU loses at least 2 more - if that happens The Yotes can have an extra loss and still remain tied. (Stated differently, if they lose 2, we can lose 3.)
NDSU - Bison have played 2 more games, and only have 4 left. If they win all 4, it would mean a sweep of USD, and 13-3 record ( which would be USD's best case at that point too), so they are still in control of their own path. Unless the Yotes drop 3 of the 4 before NDSU, it sets up that a split with NDSU still gives the SL title to USD.
ORU - similar to Bison since they have 3 L's, only less room for error for ORU.
In short, the Yotes are really in the drivers seat, since we know those three teams play each other. SDSU's 4 games against NDSU/ORU mean that there are 4 L's guaranteed to be split between those three teams, which will almost certainly knock 2 of them out of being mathematically alive (barring a Yotes collapse, of course). That is why the split @ Brookings was such a big deal for the Yotes.

What's the magic number of cancelled games needed for USD to clinch the top seed?
(I kid, but also can't help but feel our turn is coming when it comes to having a cancelled series)

Abmas with 42 points with 3 minutes left (against SDSU). The most in the NCAA this year is 46 - he has a pretty good shot at that unless ORU just takes the air out of the ball. (they are up 21 points) UPDATE - he took a seat, ending with 42. (BOOO - let him try for 50!)
