Western seems to have improved over their abysmal non-conference play. I'll take a look at some stats later this week. My uneducated guess is that they win or lose based on 3PT shooting performance. I'm sure it's more complicated than that, though. I think SDSU had some issues with WIU's defense as well. They have utilized a unique zone in the past....

Aside from talent, a big thing in our favor against Western Illinois is that we are playing in South Dakota. I don’t know why, but if you look at the games from the past several years, both ours and State’s, the fouls tend to favor Western Illinois. Last year, it was brutal. In the first quarter we had five fouls in about 3 minutes, before they had a single one. (The game is out on their website, but their announcer is extremely annoying to listen to...)

Just a quick look at WIU's stats tells me this is still a below-average Summit team. Across the board they are bottom half in most stats, but they are above average in getting steals and blocks. They give up more turnovers than they force, though.
In conference play most of their stats have improved slightly. The one major area of improvement has been their 3-Point FG defense. Overall they allow 0.357 (#8 Summit), but in conference play they have tightened that up to 0.317 (#3 Summit, after NDSU and USD)

I would say the Coyotes have probably played Western Illinois tougher than any opponent on their floor. I can remember one loss the year Western won the Summit tourney but other than I think the Coyotes have been good in Macomb. So with that said lets do a fact check.
2020 - W 96-65 2019 - W 83-61 2018 - W 82-58 2017 - L 81-75 2016 - W 102-77 2015 - W 101-87 2014 - W 79-76 2013 - W 63-60 2012 - W 62-47
Since joining the Summit League the Coyotes are 8-1 in Macomb. There were some close ones early on but in the last few years other than the one loss the Coyotes have defeated the Necks rather handily. Actually they have probably played them better on the road than at home. They have lost twice at home to them in that time frame. They were swept by them in 2017. The Coyotes had some close calls on the road over the years but for whatever the reason they bring their A game with them to their Dog Pound probably more than any other gym in the league considering that WIU has been a strong team most of those years.
Looking ahead the Coyotes only have SDSU and UND on the road and all of the other teams at home. I am glad to get the Bison at home and maybe by the last weekend there can be a few more fans to make a bigger difference. UND has been pretty horrible so I am glad to draw them on the road. Get by the Necks in a week and a half and the only real games that the Coyotes won't be big favorites is the ones at Frost Arena. The Coyotes are in a stretch of 8 of 10 on the road before finishing with the last 4 at home against ORU and NDSU.

TBU factoid: When the Yotes take the court in Macomb, it will have been 682 days since the lost a SL game of some sort (conference or tourney).

FWIW, I do think this will be an opportunity to see how we are currently stacking up against SDSU. WIU's games in Brookings were pretty similar to each other (close games, Jacks creating separation in mid-4th quarter). That said, I really do expect a similar pattern of the past two series: ugly blowout in game 1, competitive - but not in question - game 2 Hope I didn't jinx anything.

Feels like it's been a couple months since the last game! Anybody heard if Watson is going to be back?

Feels like it's been a couple months since the last game! Anybody heard if Watson is going to be back? Well, ... I just listened to Coach P's interview from Monday, ... and nothing was said about Watson. Good interview, though. She broke down the Leathernecks well. What they are trying to do now, and how they have evolved their strategy having a true big in Zars.

Heard Watson will not be playing and that it looks like she's looking at later than sooner.

Not sure how good the free stream is, but we will see. I think some of the posters on the Jacks board mentioned they had some issues with it.
