I have it on pretty good authority from someone with connections to the SF Sports Authority, that Tom Douple is wanting to move the tournament to the Twin Cities. Seems silly to me, but maybe I just don’t think big enough.

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. The SLT was good for Sioux Falls and we supported it. One of the most successful mid-major tournaments in the country.
That being said, flights to Minneapolis would be easier for all fan bases. More of a tourist draw, too. The fans that currently show up for home games (Dakota 4) are all still within a day’s drive.
Selfishly I enjoyed being able to go to the women’s championship game over an extended lunch, and go back to work.

Attendance is going to drop like a rock. Much of the USD and sdsu fans that make up most of the attendees are there because of the convenient location.

I think one of the big problems is the bill being passed by our all-knowing state legislature dealing with transgender participation in sports. Great example of a solution looking for a problem, but your or my opinion on this issue doesn't matter one iota, the NCAA frowns on laws like this big time. Example: North Carolina a few years back. Similar situation and they had seven or so NCAA events pulled from the state. Eventually they rescinded the law. I doubt South Dakota would be getting any sort of tournaments, D1, D2 or otherwise if this is enacted and a change of venue for the Summit Tourney just might be the first shot across the bow. Zimmer wrote some good stuff on this on his recap of the tourney in the Argus.

I do think it is time that the Summit tourney does get moved from Sioux Falls. Too big of an advantage to the local schools, or should I say one school. The Coyotes have already proven the way the men played short handed and the way the women played in all three games that they play better away from the Premier Center.
If I were the University of SD I would do anything in my power to get into the MVC and if they have to do it on their own so be it. I would rather my University set their own path then play follow the leader. I wonder how St. Thomas would draw at a Minneapolis based tourney. Would they or the SDSU fans draw a larger attendance number.
To me a conference tourney should be about fairness more than be about money but I am in the vast minority there. Or maybe they could just move it to the SCSC on a 10 year contract and see how it can be run there for a few years. That is probably what would be needed to even the fairness level of how the Coyotes get treated in the league. LOL

I hadn’t realized what was going on with the trans athlete bill (hadn’t been watching the local news). Here’s a Dakota News Now story to go along with the two Argus ones: www.dakotanewsnow.com/2021/03/11/anti-trans-bill-could-put-ncaa-events-at-risk-in-south-dakota/I’m not a fan of talking politics on this board, but this affects the SLT and the Summit Volleyball Tournament we earned for next season as well as any NCAA tournaments in the future. Many local groups have worked hard for many years to get those events here. This will cost the state and Sioux Falls area in particular millions. And all for what? Asinine.

I would assume that if there is any thought of moving the tournament out of Sioux Falls that it is to follow a giant sack of cash that makes attendance less important. Attendance in Minneapolis would still be good, even if St Thomas wasn't in the mix, and it would probably make the Summit more attractive to prospective members.
Would backlash from the NCAA actually impact the location of a conference tournament? I don't have time to look back at the North Carolina incident, but I don't recall the NCAA forcing the hand of any conference activities.

Well, Sanford is trying to push into MSP... Honestly, I'm not sure attendance would drop much - if at all - overall. Just like how a high number of people who go to USD/SDSU end up in Sioux Falls, a high number of people who go to NDSU end up in MSP. Probably just replacing blue with green in the stands. The men's tourney would would be just fine, though both Xcel and Target Center seem way too large. The women's tourney may drop from being near the top to being just another conference tourney with poor attendance. (Unless they are split and WBB stays in SF?)

I don't have time to look back at the North Carolina incident, but I don't recall the NCAA forcing the hand of any conference activities. In a word, yes. The NCAA has to sanction any official event. The organizers have to submit an application to the NCAA for each event, including the SLT. They have shown a willingness to pull support for any and all NCAA events in states that pass discriminatory legislation. You can't run the event without NCAA sanctioning it. Let me refresh your memory on North Carolina: apnews.com/article/e6c7a15d2e16452c8dcbc2756fd67b44Fortunately for North Carolina, their economy could somewhat absorb the losses. Their economy is similar in size to the country of Sweden. We don't have that luxury here in SD. Amazon pulling out would cost over 1,000 jobs, for example. But NC did end up rescinding the law based on that economic backlash.

Moving the SLT out of Sioux Falls will tank the attendance. Look at how poor attendance is at the home games. People don't even drive from Sioux Falls to Vermillion to fill up the SCSC except for the state game.
The SLT has had the success it has because of the location. 2 of the largest drawing schools in the conference are both an hour away and the majority of their alumni live in the same town the tournament is being held in. Plus, South Dakota is a strange place when it comes to events. If there's an event that gains some traction and public interest, everybody in town will be there. Look at the Garth Brooks concerts from a few years ago - SF didn't sell out 11 shows because they love Garth Brooks that much, it turned into a "everybody is gonna be there" situation and then it was cool to say you got tickets. Same thing happens at the SLT. Half or more of the people there don't go to any regular season games (no matter what team they are 'fans' of) and are sure not going to travel to the cities to go see the tournament.
Would be a huge mistake if the SL cares about attendance at the tournament. If it's a money grab, that's another story. Would be depressing to see a half empty arena for a championship game.

You might be right, it is asinine, but what right does an outside entity have in trying to dictate what laws the people of a state and their elected legislature pass? The NCAA was wrong previously and the Summit is wrong here. The only parties punished in all this (the schools) have no say in passing laws. It's stupid, treating member schools this way for something outside of their control. If Douple is heading in that direction then he can get F'd. Time to get rid of that guy. He's worthless anyway. Takes credit for growing the Summit when the reality is these schools are just falling into his lap and the improvement and stability in this conference is because of the Dakota schools, not due to anything he's done.

There is no purpose to passing this legislation other than trying to score political points with the conservative base and beating their collective chests. Virtue-signaling, as some would call it. I hope our state government has other more important matters to attend to, like figuring out how to keep our best teachers from leaving the state for higher pay in our neighboring states, (as only one example). I'm no expert in law, but don't schools that receive federal funding (i.e. all publics) have to conform to federal anti-discrimination laws, anyway? What right does a state's elected legislature have to pass unconstitutional laws, or laws that break Federal laws? If the NCAA just "went along with" whatever situation they found from state to state, wouldn't they be just as liable for breaking those federal anti-discrimination laws? As an organization they have their own rules about that, which are in place partially to protect student-athletes, and partially to protect themselves from liability (I would assume). Like I said, I'm no expert. I fully agree with you about Douple, though. He has stumbled into a great situation that was created by the Dakota Schools. He should probably try to remember where his bread is buttered.

Getting pretty close to a political discussion here. Let's keep this board on topic - Coyote athletics. It's about the only place we have left that isn't actively trying to divide us.

That the two are becoming intertwined is perhaps a testament to how absurd this legislation is. Nothing to gain from it, lots of problems that may come from it.
