All the North Dakota site, they say we should host the tournament in whatever school wins the regular season. That would be a nightmare to plan. First of all, where are you going to find hotel rooms for the teams, let alone for the fans, one week in advance? Can you imagine trying to house that many people in the limited hotels in Macomb Illinois? Oh and what about the facilities? You’re not going to be able to fit 10,000 fans in several of the gyms/Arenas in our conference. That plan would be so chaotic that you wouldn't have to worry about a crowd. No one would come.

And many smaller mid-major conferences still do that in basketball (tournament hosted by the regular season champ). I think that if the facilities or hotels aren't up to snuff they just use "nearby" facilities in larger cities. Vermillion hosted the Volleyball SLT, despite not having adequate hotel space. I think teams stayed in Sioux Falls or Sioux City? OTOH, the Summit has not done that in basketball since 1995. The sport has outgrown that model. It was hosted in a "bid contract" manner in the following cities since 1995: Buffalo, NY 2 years Moline, IL 2 years Fort Wayne, IN 3 years Kansas City 2 years Tulsa, OK 4 years Sioux Falls 14 and counting... Only two of those locations are in truly neutral locations, Moline and Sioux Falls. What other "neutral" city will care about the Summit? And besides, going back to a "regular season champ hosting" model would require the mens/womens tournaments to be separate, and I think the synergy of the two together has been part of its success in SF.

The fact of the matter is the tournament would flop in just about any other city. Except MAYBE Fargo. You put it in Minneapolis or Omaha and nobody there would care. Any place close to Macomb or Tulsa would be so far away that it wouldn't matter. If the goal is having butts in the seats, SF it is.
