I. Am. Excited.
Here's to good health and offseason development realized among the underclassmen. Word is at least one or two of the new faces is the real deal.
This should be a damn fun ride this year.

This should be a damn fun ride this year. Good to have you back, Cityleague. I'm excited to see Larkins play (although I don't know how much we will see her in these first two games). In her recruiting videos she had an uncanny resemblance to Allison Arens IMHO. Very athletic.

Great to be back for women's hoops. It looks like the color of the basketball is more of a pumpkin orange. A bit lighter than the brownish color. I wonder if the ball itself other than the color is different.

Super jealous of you guys there in person tonight. If we could hit some shots, we'd have run away with it already.
Nice close up of our very own hoopsmom on the ESPN feed by the way.

Anyone want to explain the ref with the mask that has a mouth hole lol? I'm confused. Why bother with the mask at all when they are surrounded by 3,000 people not wearing masks and yelling their heads off?

Oof. Ugly loss. The part that makes me sick is that people are going to look at the score and say wow usd only lost to Oklahoma by 2. We should have won that game. Period. Nobody's fault really. We just shot terribly. Left a ton of points in the court and Oklahoma was lights out from the 3. Only difference really. Learn from it and move on.

Thought they might pull that one out. Good effort. Not the worst loss in the world. Couple plays here or there against a pretty talented team with a really good coach. That’ll more than likely help later. That trio of Sooner wings is tough.

Yeah, that one really hurts. Big opportunity missed. Seems like the team really struggled to score in the middle part of the game. Came out hot and finished strong, but just a whole lot of flatness in the middle...couldn't get into the paint at all. All those missed free throws are easy to point to as the difference. Definitely needed more from someone besides our trio of seniors in Lamb, Sjerven, and Korngable. Only 6 bench points and 7 points from the other two starters. The possibility of an at-large bid took a big hit with this loss.
That game was still a ton of fun though. I haven't been able to get to a basketball game in Vermillion since probably February of 2018 and I was really impressed with the atmosphere tonight. I felt the fan involvement, student section, and gameday production have taken noticeable steps forward. It helps that it was a tight game against a big name, but I don't remember the atmosphere being quite that electric before (outside of the rivalry game). Kudos to the athletic department and all the fans for making it such a fun place to watch a game.

I wish we would have fouled on Oklahoma's last possession, especially when they got it down low. We had one to give.

Was a choppy game for both teams. I agree about fouling before the shot and even fouling the guard way out front to only leave them a few seconds. Man we had several shots around the basket rolled around and out tonight. Needed to set a screen on last play and get a shot off. They were hot from three.
Ladies battled and made it interesting at the end!! Great effort! Learn and move on!

I don't want to read any other comments before posting to sway my opinions. I want to honestly critique the game and say it like I see it. Some people may take it as a rip at the Yotes but that is not my intention.
First of all the Bad
I would have never thought this summer that I would be sitting here thinking that we are seeing a football team that is well coached, disciplined and plays hard. We didn't always see that in previous seasons but what a turn around.
Now for Women's Basketball I hate to have to say after one game I see the opposite. I know it is one game and things can be better but I don't like about two-thirds of what I saw. The biggest thing that comes to mind about that game was that the Coyotes played selfish ISO ball and most of the offense was created off the dribble. My o my where was the passing. If the Coyotes continue that trend it is not gonna be the best season more than likely. We can call it the first game but Oklahoma was also playing their first game (I believe) so that is no excuse. Passing the ball around isn't something that takes a few games to get right. It is more like a lack of preparation. The energy level just wasn't there much at all other than at the very beginning of the game and in the last few minutes. Otherwise a very flat performance.
I am gonna credit Oklahoma for the win but I believe more of this is on the Coyotes and not being ready to play even close to a full game. This was a huge game for the resume and a tough pill to swallow for getting an at large bid. Honestly the team didn't look like at at large type team tonight.
I know it is one game but the Coyotes really need more athleticism and more ability to shoot from the arc. OU did a great job of going inside out and set up their looks nicely. If the Coyotes goal is to win a tourney game they need to be a little quicker overall first and get more length as well. That is easier said than done but if the Yotes want to be a top 25 team the recent recruiting needs to step up at least a little bit. For the Summit this team should be mostly fine. I thought OU was a solid team but nothing this Coyotes team shouldn't have been able to handle and IMO by double digits in their own building.
After game one this team sure looks like a 3 woman team right now. We know that Sjerven, Korngable and Lamb are players but others need to step up from being just kind of good to really being impact players. An example of this is Krull. She is one of the most if not the most highly touted recruit to come to South Dakota but I think she hasn't shown that she is an elite player. Solid but not elite like we would hope when she signed on. She has plenty of time but I believe we need to see more.
The free throws killed the Coyotes. It wasn't that long ago that they were almost an 80% team from the line. I believe the final number tonight was under 60%. Tough to win with that kind of number.
Now the good
The crowd was at times awesome. I think it would have been even better had the Coyotes been playing better. Liv Korngable can never be over rated. She tends to be by both Coyotes fans and by the Summit League. Her not being 1st team all conference is a big mistake IMO. At worst she is the 2nd best player on the team but I am inclined to put her at co-best with Sjerven right now. She is probably the best all around player on the team right now. Liv does a great job of creating her own shot. She is probably amongst the all time great Coyotes at that. When things aren't going well on offense and a team like SDSU is taking away everything with their defense is when a player like Korngable is so valuable. If they need to go ISO she is at the top of the list to be able to beat her defender and get practically where she wants to on the flood. I am so impressed with her game right now.
Sjerven is so good on D but tonight she had a tough one on offense. She is such a vital cog keeping teams from controlling the paint and needing to shoot from outside. In the Summit she just slams that lane shut on D. She did a nice job of keeping OU on the perimeter in the set offense. She did a good job of staying out of foul trouble and taking the bad fouls she tends to take. So good for her for that.
In very limited minutes I liked what I saw from Grace Larkins. She has moxy and some needed athleticism it would seem.
I am sure the team will bounce back but OU absolutely was the better team and if the Yotes would have pulled it out I believe they would have been very fortunate.

The Yotes didn't seem to know what to do with the match-up zone OU played. Played a big portion of the game with a deer-in-headlights kind of flow. But you do have to credit OU - very well coached and did a great job scouting. The covered the shooters well, and left the 2nd tier shooters open - which largely worked. We will need someone other than Liv to make shots, but I do think that will happen most nights.
