goyotes.com/news/2022/2/9/womens-basketball-coyotes-welcome-omaha-for-thursday-matchup.aspxOmaha notes: THE MAVERICKS
Omaha (6-16, 2-11) makes its first trip to Vermillion since 2020 after COVID-19 canceled last year's regular season series. The Mavericks are battling with Denver for the final spot in the Summit League Tournament and a chance to repeat their Cinderella run from a year ago. Omaha is led in scoring by Mariah Murdie (11.1 ppg) and Elena Pilakouta (10.7 ppg). Pilakouta was limited in minutes in the previous meeting against the Coyotes due to an injury that also held her out of two Summit games.

Omaha Sophomore Guard Lauren Frost has entered the Transfer Portal and thus will not be available for the rest of the season.

It’s game day, and this is a big one (imo). Will the Yotes respond to Saturday's loss with a statement, shaking off the mid season funk and setting up a stellar finish?
Or will they let the funk continue against the probable 7/8 seed by letting them have a chance into the 3rd?
Although Omaha is improved we need to come out and seal this win in the first half. We can’t let them hang around and be forced to leave the big 3 in. These last games are all important games to seal the win in the first half and let the bench play it out. That’s what stood out to me between us and SDSU on Saturday, our bench is great but any one of their players was able to step in and keep the flow going. Right now, and I’m sorry if this ruffles some feathers, we don’t have that and now more then ever we need them to start stepping up as we get closer to tournament time.

If this isn't a defensively suffocating bloodbath of near epic proportions I will be shocked once again. Can't imagine the Yotes don't come out like a bunch of crazed dogs to borrow a phrase.

I know my thought of how the Yotes played tonight but I have to ask... Men's League Waterboy... would you consider the effort tonight a defensively suffocating?

Pretty much what I expected. First half was dominant. Second half was a little shaky. But you can relax when you give up 11 points in the first. Still would’ve liked to have seen a little more offensively in a pretty low-pressure situation.

Agree with the above. After the first quarter it was, "Yeah, that's what we know and love". Defense kept its intensity after that, but the offense was just off...too much dribbling and poor shot selection too often. Somewhat surprised at that.

Great D first half! Mix of bench players played even early 1st Q and rest of game so offensive consistency is more difficult to establish. I like working in bench players as early as possible!

Nice job red and white ladies with the lesser amount of black. The 35 says it all.

My observations from last night in Vermillion, they are worth what you paid for them Typically excellent defensive effort last night against a putrid Omaha team. Great minutes from our bench players and I feel like for a good part of the game we saw what a 2022-23 squad might look like on the court (Krull, Larkins, Watson, Peplowski, Ugofsky/Geubbert). We have some real problems on the offensive side of the court to address. We shot 1-15 from beyond the arc in the second half with the lone made basket coming from Macy. These were very OPEN looks at the basket as well, all good shot selections and from some of our better shooters. If we don't start making those OPEN looks at a much higher clip we will be hosting a WNIT game in March. We need to come out with better energy in the 3rd quarter. Our women looked a little tired at times. My last observation is we need to get Hannah some significant rest leading into March. That woman is beat up, she is so strong and so important to us but she has literally taken a beating every game this year and is starting to show the wear and tear. We have some easy ones coming up. Get Pep as many minutes as we can and get Hannah as healthy and fresh as we can for the Summit. Coach seems to have lost her patience a bit with the lazy defensive effort Mazurek puts out and I can see why watching her week in and out. I like what Pep brings to the court, great energy on defense and she was a force on the O board last night. She could play a very important role for us when the games really start to count if she continues to show the kind of improvement and work effort she has.

And yet when next year's starters were on the floor against them there's just no real ability to put the ball in the hole. I understand that offseason development will occur, along with the entry of some new faces, but I'd still be just a bit concerned about what things are going to look like when you can't lean on three kids with 4,000 career points and however hundred many starts between them.
