Looks like USD and Omaha are proving themselves against tough schedules, (Omaha took ranked Creighton to 5 sets) while Denver and KC still have a couple of question marks, have also both scheduled tough. SDSU and NDSU have been "taking care of business" against weaker schedules, and are probably building some confidence. Once the conference season starts, it will be interesting to see if either of them can maintain a 4-seed. North Dakota and Oral Roberts are trying to stay out of the bottom tier so they can battle for the six Summit Tournament spots.

Revisiting my preseason predictions for Summit non-con matches: (aka: "time to eat some crow") # | team | predict | actual | 10 | North Dakota | 5-6 | 3-8 | 9 | St Thomas | 3-9 | 2-10 | 8 | Western Ill | 3-10 | 4-9 | 7 | NDSU | 6-6 | 7-5 | 6 | SDSU | 9-3 | 6-6 | 5 | Oral Roberts | - | 3-9 | 4 | Kansas City | 5-8 | 3-10 | 3 | Denver | - | 6-5 | 2 | South Dakota | 9-3 | 11-1 | 1 | Omaha | 4-6 | 5-5 |
Which teams each school won or lost to is all over the place, so it's hard to make too many specific comments about that. In some cases the schedule wasn't finalized, so I was showing the wrong teams, and some opponents are just better or worse than last year's RPI (that I was basing my predictions on) anyway. Generally speaking, though, USD's performance was well above my expectation, and several teams were not as good as I predicted, notably SDSU. I didn't make a prediction for ORU or Denver, but given that Denver was the preseason pick to win the conference, I'd say they have under-performed somewhat.

* all rankings and SOS from MasseyRatings.com Not many major changes in the top tier. USD may be in good shape for an at-large consideration, or a good seed in the NCAAs. Omaha's record does not represent their potential in conference play, they had the toughest schedule by far, and played well in their losses. KC and UST added their worst losses in the final weekend of the non-conference, not boding well for them going forward. North Dakota and Oral Roberts both got their best wins of the non-con in the final weekend, beating Drake and Texas Tech (respectively)! Both teams will need to play better to get into the Summit post-season (6 team-playoff), so finishing the non-con strong is just what the doctor ordered.

Looks like UND (won 3-1) and NDSU (won 3-0) both over-performed the predictions.
The matches involving the South Dakota Schools went exactly as predicted: Denver beats SDSU 3-1 USD beats Omaha 3-2
The Yotes are now 12-1, and Juhnke looks to lock up her fourth POW with a big performance on Saturday....

* all rankings and SOS from MasseyRatings.com The big change here is ORU beating KC and moving up in the rankings. Also SDSU over Omaha was an upset that gave each team their best win/ worst loss respectively. Seems like 5 teams fighting over the final three three Tournament spots in the middle tier, with North Dakota playing better than expected. Also, can SDSU pull another upset or two, and enter the top tier?

A mention of Omaha's ability (or lack of) to close out 5-set matches got me thinking, what's the 5-set match record for each team? So here you go: Team | 5-Sets | % | # | South Dak | 5-0 | 1.00 | 5 | NDSU | 3-1 | .750 | 4 | North Dak | 2-1 | .667 | 3 | St Thom | 2-1 | .667 | 3 | SDSU | 4-3 | .571 | 7 | ORU | 1-1 | .500 | 2 | KC | 2-3 | .400 | 5 | Omaha | 2-4 | .333 | 6 | Denver | 0-1 | .000 | 1 | Western Ill | 0-2 | .000 | 2 |
Conclusions? Looks like SDSU has actually had the most experience in 5-set matches, plus a winning record there. Could have been a contributing factor in the upset win over Omaha? NDSU looks good there as well. Could that experience help them close out close matches in the future? or in the tournament? Who knows. Surprisingly, Denver has only been in one vs Colorado.

NEW (first) RPI rankings! (with conference record and standing) Rnk | Tm | All | Conf | Standing | 32 | South Dakota | 14-2 | 3-1 | #3T | 82 | Denver | 9-6 | 3-1 | #3T | 99 | Omaha | 7-7 | 2-2 | #5T | 124 | NDSU | 12-5 | 5-0 | #1 | 160 | SDSU | 8-8 | 2-2 | #5T | . | . | . | . | . | 213 | North Dakota | 7-9 | 4-1 | #2 | 238 | Oral Roberts | 5-11 | 2-2 | #5T | 269 | Kansas City | 4-13 | 1-3 | #8 | 295 | St Thomas | 2-15 | 0-5 | #9T | 324 | Western Ill | 4-13 | 0-5 | #9T |
I don't have a source for finding good wins or bad losses easily using RPI, so I'll just leave that part out for now. Interesting that conference play has muddied the waters quite a bit with regard to rankings and standings. Right now I'm only seeing two tiers, upper and lower, with the winner from the bottom half still making the Conference playoff. With unbalanced schedules, we won't have a clear standings picture until a few more weeks, but the two North Dakota Schools have taken full advantage of their opportunities! I still think that at the end of the day USD, Denver and Omaha will be the cream that rises to the top, but the XDSU challengers are getting into the mix as credible contenders, and North Dakota is having a resurrection from the dead. ORU and KC seem to be sliding in the wrong direction, and UST and WIU can't get up off the (door) mat.
