Zimmer is a Jack's (& Renner Monarchs) homer and has never tried too hard to change that. His articles are hard to read whenever I actually glance at that paper. However, everything he stated on this podcast is spot on. It bugs me just knowing the joy that he's getting from USD's situation. Right now, USD football is a Smart Car stuck in the mud and spinning it's wheels. We desperately need someone like a Strevelar to will us up to respectability. I don't think our facilities (which are very good) and the school's academics (which sorry to say, is not much of a positive for recruiting many football players) will bring in the type of players we need. Starting fresh with a new coach I'm convinced now, would have been a positive move. I'd LOVE to know what Nielson plans to do different than what he's done in the past to generate interest in this team again.

I'd LOVE to know what Nielson plans to do different than what he's done in the past to generate interest in this team again. Oh come on. I would not label Zimmer as a homer. Tell that to all his Twitter followers anytime he offers the mildest of criticism. The reason you find his articles tough to read is because they usually are describing the success that Jackrabbit teams have had. Don't confuse positive articles with being a homer. And I can guaran-FREAKIN-tee he does not take joy in USD struggling, or root against them. Any good writer (and he's one of them) roots for a good story. Yes, successful teams have more stories, but if USD can get to the point of being in the football playoffs every year, it's possible we would get a USD-SDSU playoff matchup. And that would be a great story, would create more interest, and create more clicks. And yes, create the opportunity for more great stories to tell. People would say the same thing to me in past years about Stu Whitney (who I know a little) and I would just shake my head. You could say a lot of things about Stu, but he was not rooting for the Jacks over the Coyotes.

Totally agree. I sorta view Zimmer as an equal opportunity offender. He doesn’t really care about your feelings and is pretty blunt.
Now, the one critique he offered, that I have no way to quantify, is when he basically dismissed the notion that USD FB has talent on the roster. He backed it up with great insight into OL recruiting locally via his quote of former USF coach Anderson. “It’s hard to get good OL in this area because Jason Eck gets whoever he wants.” That’s access and info that Zimmer has as a reporter. We know our depth at all positions, especially the trenches, has always been an issue. But do we really have no talent? Seems like hyperbole. Theis, Thomas, CVE, Lawrence, Bell, Samson, Harden, Reed, Cochrane, & Greenfield all come to mind recently. I kinda go back to the 2018 season. I remember saying how important it was coming off the magical Streveler season that we had a winning season and possibly make playoffs again. That would’ve given them the ability to establish themselves as perennial contenders and in theory would’ve helped local recruiting. I do feel like the recruiting issues are systemic, as the university gets out recruited locally for students in general, especially males. We don’t recruit to the business school as well as we should, which would help get more males on campus and accent all the wonderful careers open through that pathway. Add in the fact Vermilion isn’t known for being business friendly or seen as a growing and thriving community and it makes it tough on the athletic departments.

The issue with the female/male ratio of undergraduates is not just a USD thing, it’s nation-wide as a trend. Lots of socio-economic, cultural and political stuff contribute to it. Too big of a topic for this forum IMO.
At the end of the day, winning cures all, and in football there is a lot more inertia than other sports. It’s tough to build long-lasting success, but once you have it, it’s easier to keep it.
Let’s just hope that we are able to use the advantages we have to start the process. Not every program can offer an ambitious young O-Coordinator a coach-in-waiting situation.

Yeah, I still need to listen to the podcast, but I agree that the Yotes have talent, but also agree that they need to focus on the lines. If you want to catch up to the XDSU's, you have to narrow the advantage there. It is frustrating because obviously the hail mary was fortunate, but the other take I had walking out of the Dome that day was that the game was relatively even. You couldn't walk out of there thinking that one team was head and shoulders better than the other. SDSU was better in 2021, but the margin of difference was much smaller than it seems now. Based on the schedule, I did not think the Yotes would make the playoffs this year. But it went more sideways than I expected.

Hmm. I would have been fine with a change but I'm also fine with this, weirdly. Sometimes bad things happen and you need to stay the course. This season was a nightmare but I still think Bob is a good coach. Will be watching closely the changes he makes. As for Herbster, great AD. We're lucky he hasn't moved on. All of our programs are doing really well but football. Let's see if Bob can get this team going in the right direction next season. There is a lot of crow to eat in this thread. Fortunately, not by me.

I am planting my flag here: Bob needs to stay. He needs to hire a new OC, and if he can get a guy similar to what he did hiring Travis, we are sitting really well. Our schedule next year is NIGHT AND DAY from this year’s. Aiden has the offense looking coherent, D played outstanding in spite of all the injuries. Bob can do it. The University needs to put its FULL support behind him for one more FULL year to prove him out. We have some good looking dudes coming in, but they are FOR SURE gone if Bob is gone. I also think a change at OL is necessary, which is hard to say because I really like Andy. Bumping this for purposes of building up my own ego, not that it needs to be any bigger.

Fortunately, not by me. I'm not upset about my comments. I stated (and voted) that I was undecided. Later, I took the stance that yes, after seeing how inept our offense (and frankly the team at the end) was WITH HIM CALLING THE PLAYS, that at that rate it was time to let him go. Obviously the BIGGEST problem was the the lack of a competent OC along with filling a few key positions. Thank God that was exactly what we got. I'm very happy we kept Bob. This coaching staff is ticking along and Bob's at the helm directing it well.

I'm a patient guy with coaches, especially football, I wouldn't mind Bob staying for length of contract. 2 cents. After all this time, still worth 2 cents. But for the record.

Helluva season. Bad ending. Offense finally learned how to run the clock down with a lead and run the ball when appropriate. He does lack charisma. Think we are headed in the right direction. Not to be Debbie downer, but we only the Bison once every 5 tries at best. I have faith. We are in the best conference is the bottom line. We played well most of the time. We didn’t get lucky in Fargo. We were better. That’s my 2 cents. Go Yotes
