Creighton playing Marquette right now on FS2 for the Big East championship. A Creighton win could give them a top 4 regional seed and a potential destination for the Yotes. Other possible destinations are Minnesota or Nebraska.

Most likely we will play in the region as you point out. We could play in any of the locations you point out without being in their bracket. The NCAA is cost conscious in minor sports.

For those with more knowledge in this area than me, is there any chance of not playing the host of the pod in the first round? Or is that our reality?

That’s sorta tough to answer. This years tournament has (16) first round sites. Those sites will be hosted by each of the teams seeded #1-16. Up until this year, the NCAA then filled in the other three teams into those brackets basically being guided by travel expenses. This year the committee is seeding the top 32 spots of the 64 in the tournament. So let’s say Wisconsin is seeded #1 and South Dakota was the #32 seed, the Coyotes would go to Madison. But their first round match would be against one of the remaining teams that were unseeded but likely geographically close to Madison. If the Coyote would win the first round match then they would play Wisconsin.
However let’s say the Coyotes are unseeded and they’re sent to Madison. And just for illustration purposes, let’s say Iowa State was the #32 seed in Madison. We would either play Iowa State or Wisconsin in the first round. That matchup would be decided by the NCAA oversight competition committee. So again let’s say the Madison regional had Wisconsin (seeded), Iowa State (seeded) , South Dakota (unseeded) and Northern Illinois. If the oversight committee deemed the Coyotes better than Northern Illinois, we would play Iowa State. Then if we won we would play Wisconsin next. If Northern Illinois was deemed better than USD we would play Wisconsin.
So the answer to what I think your question is there’s a pretty good chance we would play a 17-32 seeded team. There’s an outside chance we could get a seed. Probably not but possible. I think we are a bubble team ( meaning we are in the top 32 in the country). If we aren’t seeded BUT deemed as the “better team” then I think think there’s a a good opportunity to get a win. Strictly my opinion but we are capable of beating a team not ranked higher than 20th. So a team seeded 21-32 is a winnable match

There are some contributors at VolleyTalk who have done Tournament projections for many years. They do it weekly over the last half of the season. Earlier they had us playing teams in the 17-32 group (5-seeds to 8-seeds), which would be good. Recently they had us playing top-16 teams (1-seed to 4-seeds), I.e. hosts, which wouldn’t be as good.
Our RPI is around 55 right now.

If our RPI is 55 or so that would mean we’d play a 2 or 3 seed. I will say the NCAA oversight competition committee doesn’t pay much attention to the bottom 32. In fact I’d say zero. To do this tournament completely fair they should seed every team. But then that would mean higher travel costs and they won’t do that, that’s a given.
We are better than 55. I’d say we are low to mid 30’s but come from a non defacto league. I’d like to play #25 on up. That would be a great opportunity. Last year we played Minnesota and I’m thinking they were ranked 10 or 11, and we played them tougher than hell. We lost in 3 with average scores being 25-20, but 2 of those sets were tighter than the score. Honestly we tightened up some when you would hope that the better team would flinch. Our gals are seasoned though, and I think they’ll be just fine.
A win in the dance would be super. Let’s say we come in seeded 40th, that means we’d play a 25-28 seed. Right now that’d be Washington State, Southern Cal, Towson, or Arkansas. Those are winnable matches. Certainly no cake walk but winnable. Win that match then your playing someone like Ohio State, Minnesota, Oregon, or Penn State. Likely losses but if we learned anything at all from last years womens basketball team it is a fact that on any given day you can beat a blue blood. Ask Baylor.
Watch the selection show at 6:30 and hope for a seed. If not, hope for the weakest regional in the area.
