Zero field goals in the final 10 minutes, but hold on (somehow) to beat BYU.

Geez, talk about "holding on"...as gopheryote said almost blew a 21-point lead with ten minutes left by managing to go zero for the rest of the game from the field. Toss in missing two free throws with five seconds left and a one-point lead...not good! Oh, well, gotta be happy with the win.

From time sounds of it the officiating was egregious in the last few minutes that made it closer than it should have been. We were ice cold from the field and missed some critical free throws but hung on. Winning close games is never a bad thing. Beats losing close games.

I went to look at Kruz's stats on the ESPN app and apparently he's been promoted to the NBA. Congrats to Kruz. 🤣🤣

I was able to watch the game because it was on BYUtv and it was on my channel lineup on DirecTV. BYU has their own channel? And DirecTV carries it? Who knew?
They did play really well, but got a bit lucky too. In the first half they really moved the ball well to create great looks. And sure, it helped that they shot the bleep out of it too. They forced BYU to go to a trapping zone for the entire 2nd half. That was effective, but they did foul a lot.
Defensively, they did a good job doubling the post from the other block and being physical. They rotated to shooters ok, but really benefited from them missing some open looks. It was the perfect anatomy of an upset. I will say that the Yotes didn't look as overmatched with size and athleticism like they have earlier in the year. Maybe they were better prepared, maybe BYU is not as big (Wisconsin) or as athletic (Miss St) as their prior opponents.
Kruz was great, and others knocked down big three-pointers in the first 30 minutes. AJ was a game-time decision (finally diagnosed as a deep bone bruise) and really struggled. Three or four air-balls and four turnovers. Missed two front-ends of 1:1 as well. He just needs to keep playing and get his legs under him (to the extent he can, obviously).
We can nitpick and claim it was a bit fortunate with the way the last 10 minutes played out, but bottom line is that it's still a great win, particularly if you're hoping to see gradual improvement from this squad throughout the year. There is no dominant team in the Summit...

All I saw was a final score, and it was eye popping for me. I really don't care how it happened. BYU has been a strong program for many years and is joining the Big 12 next year. I will very happily take a win against them anyway we can get it.
Jumping in further on how good BYU has been - BYU has won 19+ games every year since 2005-06, averaging over 24 wins each year in that timeframe. BYU has been in the WCC for 11 years and has finished 2nd or 3rd in 10 of those years (while competing with GONZAGA and perennial mid-major power St. Mary's).
I expected USD to lose this one by a lot. This looks like a fantastic win. Something for this team to rally around and launch from.

Wow! What an outstanding win. That has to be one of the biggest wins in the history of our men’s program in the division 1 era. Congratulations to Coach Peterson and the team. Not sure Craig ever beat a name team like BYU when he was at USD. Craig in his contract at Utah State had cash incentives in his contract if he was able to beat BYU or Utah. This win is really a big deal. Kruz made some big shots and the team did enough to get this win. So incredibly difficult to win against a team on the road in a game that they are paying you to come play. We received no calls in the last 8 minutes of that game but you can expect in these circumstances to not get any calls. USD showed some toughness to win anyway. This team will continue to grow as the season progresses. New coach and new players but still have shown the ability to beat two good teams in Lipscomb and BYU. Everyone contributed today in so many ways. Taking charges, big rebounds on offense and defense, and plenty of clutch shots made. Truly a team effort. I do agree that AJ’s shot may have been a little rusty but we do not win that game without him running the point against their press. He was a calming influence. My sources do not say bone bruise so not sure where you get your information but for him to play is an absolute blessing for this team. Keep fighting Yotes and go get another road win.

I think it’s also important to mention that we got a nice check worth $85k to go along with that win from BYU

Deep bone bruise was mentioned in the radio pre-game.

Also there 11,578 at the USD win with about 99.9% BYU fans. A BYU South Dakota ticket also got you into the Jazz game.

The announcers told a pretty funny story - some of their production crew was watching shoot-around after getting set up. Wearing their black and red, they thought wow - South Dakota looks really really good. Later they realized it was the Trailblazers.
