If they finish out of the top 6, then it's four games in March, and a win on Friday would be needed to even play on the weekend.
Their NET rating is 288, which is 9th in the Summit.
There is a long way to go and lots of time for improvement, and the Summit doesn't appear too deep...but there is definitely a non-zero chance of this team losing on Friday of the tourney.
This is not really a reaction to the game today. Irvine is good and is probably the favorite in the Big West. But the Yotes are undersized across the board, and it has really hurt them at times thus far. There are reasons to think they will improve...let's hope that materializes.

We all knew this team would be good later rather than sooner. Recent events may make that even later. I'll wait until we see half of league play turn out before I start thinking about playing on Friday in Sioux Falls. However, I'm watching BYU lead Creighton right now in the 2nd half. Creighton is ranked 21st, though they were top 10 recently and have aspirations that match that. Anyone else remember when USD beat BYU? All goals for the season remain on the table.

BYU somehow finishes off a win against #21 Creighton 83-80. BYU melted down in the final 3 minutes unlike I have ever seen. Went from up 11 with 3 minutes left to down 1 with 20 seconds left. They got the ball past half court about 1 time, which was when they took the lead back at the very end.
4th loss in a row for Creighton. Other losses were 5 points to #2 Texas, 2 points to #9 Arizona, and 10 points to rival Nebraska. They have wins over #8 Arkansas and #31 Texas Tech.
I think Creighton has an incredible team this year, and they just lost to BYU - a team that USD beat in Utah. If that doesn't show you the potential that USD has then I don't know what to tell you.

Reading through our respective posts, I don't think we're stating things too differently. We both say there is room for and the possibility of improvement. I guess the main difference is you are assuming it while I state it's a hope. I just wanted to say there is a non-zero chance of making it to Saturday at the Denny. I don't think that has been on too many people's radars. Since I gave their NET rating (down to 291 now), I should also provide other ratings that are probably more predictive than NET. They are at 227 in Massey (3rd in Summit) and 253 in kenpom (5th). But being that low also leads you to the conclusion that there isn't a lot of difference between them and the schools below them. I was very bullish before the season started. Thought they might be a dark horse. But they are much lower in the ratings now than I hoped. Assuming their lack of size will be less of a factor in the Summit isn't a bad assumption. Let's hope their skill will stand out better in league play.
