Predictions:
Tommies win 70-69 Warren Nolan Yotes win 77-71 Massey
I'm not sure what Massey is smoking but I want some of that. I have to imagine we will be underdogs in the Vegas line.

That was sure a game of runs. Great 3-point shooting definitely won that game. We do have that potential but geez, the turnovers were uncharacteristic. I'll enjoy the win and not get too nitpicky.

Was really nice to get a win, over the #2 NET team in the conference, no less! Reports of the Coyotes' demise appear to have been premature...
Our guards really are a talented bunch. And in mid-major basketball, sometimes that's enough.
Also, How about Coach Eberhart? First win as interim HC. He is holding it together in a really tough situation.

That was the first time in what feels like an eternity that I had fun watching USD MBB. Great team win. It seems like the long break and more time settling in with an interim helped get this team working together more. This was night and day from the last time they took the court in KC. Lots to work on, and you can't count on 70% from 3, but a very encouraging game. Also, How about Coach Eberhart? First win as interim HC. He is holding it together in a really tough situation. I think last night's game is especially impressive for an interim HC. USD got out to a 26-8 lead early, and St Thomas furiously came back, even taking the lead with about 4 minutes left in the game. You need leadership to weather that storm and turn the momentum back in your favor.

I think the star of the game was Archambault. Held Miller to 3-7 shooting. He probably doesn't get enough credit for lock-down defense on the other team's best scorer.

I totally agree that Mason is committed to the defensive side of the ball and his strength is a big asset in holding down bigger players. However I do not agree that Mason held down their shooter. We switched on every ball screen and every check out screen so it was a combination of the entire team realizing he was a shooter. Fortunately he was limited offensively to do very much more besides the 3ball. We completely got exposed in the high ball screen and gave up multiple easy shots to the roller. They were also able to create isolations where we left our defender one on one without any help. There were several times we were able to make the offensive player spin (when we were stuck in isolation) but all of the defenders were locked into shooters so we gave up layups. We need to become much better defensively as a team if we are going to make a jump forward. We need to develop team defense where we rotate and fly to the ball. This team does not have great team speed and absolutely no shot blockers. This does not mean we cannot be good defensively but we will need to gap control and rotate quickly. The shot block is so crucial in the Men’s game but that does not appear to be an option so we will need to be great at taking charges. We are bad right now in all areas but have the ability to get better. Offensively it is great to see us score points. Unfortunately we seem to score points at home and struggle on the road. We become very stagnant and stand on the perimeter with no screening action. At times we look like the University of Kentucky without the athletes in order for us to become consistent offensively we need to become much more physical and start to screen in order to create close outs. We at times run an offense predicated on athletic ability and we surely are not the most athletic team in the conference. Screening and fundamentals can neutralize athleticism. We have shooters and now we need to create opportunities for them to get great shots. My two cents is we need to create more shots for some of are better shooters. At times we set a high ball screen and the defense hedges hard and instead of rolling the only thing we get is a kick back three for Tasos. Not always a bad option but surely cannot be the only option for a successful team. We need to find a way to get more paint touches. This team has been dealt with some challenging circumstances and continues to fight. My prayers go out to Coach Peterson as we wish and hope for a quick recovery. There is so much work to get done but this team has potential and some talent to hopefully make a run in March in Sioux Falls. If we play one on one and do not make strides defensively it could be a long season. I am going to stay positive and hope for the best! Go Yotes!

I don't know, I think you have to consider the opponent. St. Thomas was (prior to the USD game) ranked nationally in 3pt shooting and FG%. And Miller is (was?) ranked in the top 10 I think for 3pt shooting. Teams have to give up something, and USD was OK keeping them of the 3pt line. It worked.
Also worth noting the Yotes are the 11th best 3pt shooting team in the country. Looking for/hitting 3's will be a big part of their identity.

Interesting points gopheryote. I agree with you that knowing your opponent like St Thomas and what they like to do is extremely important to not allow them play to their strengths. However to be good defensively you need to do more than one thing. Good teams do more than one thing. It is not a great trade off to guard the three and give up layups. Good teams do both in a variety of ways which usually consist of quick rotations and scrambling by X ing the back side. I am thrilled with the result but major improvement needs to occur to continue to win. We gave up a lot of points. Secondly there is no question our three point shooting is a strength to this team. However I am looking for quality three point shots which I think is proven that playing inside out is a much higher percentage than just perimeter passing. We need more kids to get in the lane and either score or kick out for shots. There obviously several ways to accomplish getting the ball in the paint.( dribble penetration, screening and cutting, post touches) getting the ball in the paint takes a level of toughness but also shrinks the defense which allows for better perimeter shooting. I love the fight of our kids and hope for the best. It was a fun win on Thursday and very entertaining as a fan. My apprehension is that I do not believe consistently winning this way is achievable long term. So time to work and Go Yotes
