Finally the Yotes get to play at home! The big matches will be Thursday night against Drake, and Friday night against USF. South Florida took a top-10 Florida team to 5 sets earlier this season! The Yotes should be favored against IUPUI. Don't forget it's a white-out on Friday night against the USF Bulls.... Right now the 1-4 Yotes are ranked #134 Massey/ #176 RPI Predictions:L 2-3 vs (#97/233)* Drake W 3-0 vs (#230/198) IUPUI W 3-0 vs (#172/88) *rankings are (Massey/RPI), predictions are Massey I think Massey is over-rating Drake and under-rating the USF Bulls. Both matches will be tough. The crowd could be a big factor

Looks like we will face two defending "Players of the Week"
Drake's 5-10" Senior Libero, Jada Wills has won MVC DPOW for two weeks in a row, and currently leads all of NCAA D-1 in Digs per set (6.17)
South Florida's 5'-8" Sophomore Outside Hitter, Maria Clara Andrade won the AAC POW after she averaged 4.36 kills per set as the Bulls went 2-1 in the Bulls Invitational over the weekend. In the opening match against Idaho State, Andrade finished with 21 kills, two away from matching a career-high and 14 digs.
Later that day, she had 15 kills and 10 digs for her 10th career double-double. She also served two aces back-to-back to force a fourth set. In the sweep over the Mercer Bears, Andrade again led the Bulls with 15 kills. She also finished with a weekend-high .370 hitting percentage.

Since USD hasn't yet done a preview article..... Here's Drake's: Bulldogs by the NumbersThe Bulldogs enter the South Dakota Classic with a 2-4 record to start the 2023 season. Over their first six matches, Drake has faced off against three ranked opponents, and another that has received votes in what has been their most challenging season in program history. Both of Drake's wins came via 3-0 sweep to bookend the Cougar Challenge (9/1-9/2). Jada Wills has been the leading force for the Bulldogs, earning the first two MVC Defensive Player of the Year awards to start the 2023 season. Wills leads the league and the team with 142 total digs and an average of 6.17 digs per set. Offensively, Taylor Oberpriller and Macy Daufeldt have been the primary offensive threats for the Bulldogs with 90 kills and 85 kills, respectively. Sophomore setter Addison Beagle's 244 assists top the Drake roster. Scouting South Dakota
South Dakota enters the weekend with a 1-5 record after stints at the Cardinal & Gold Challenge in Ames, Iowa and the Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo. The Coyotes opened the season with a split in Ames including a loss to Iowa State and a 3-0 win over DePaul. Their stay at the Tiger Invitational included losses to Missouri, Northern Kentucky, and No. 3 Louisville. The tandem of Kylen Sealock and Madison Harms have logged 47 kills and 43 kills, respectively, to lead the USD roster. Harms also leads the Coyotes with 19 blocks. Setter Avery Van Hook's 128 kills pace the Coyotes in distribution. Defensively, Alaina Wolff leads the team with 56 digs. Scouting IUPUI
Drake's Friday match features an improved opponent in IUPUI. The Jaguars have had a solid start to their 2023 campaign with 2-1 records at both the Bradley Invitational (8/25-8/26) and the Hampton Inn Invitational (8/31-9/2). Maia Long's 80 digs lead the Jaguars' attack. Elsewhere on offense, Grace Purichia leads the team with 186 assists and 14 aces. The IUPUI defense is paced by Addie Evans' 74 digs and Emily Alan's 16 total blocks. Scouting South Florida
South Florida brings a 2-3 record to the Midwest this weekend. The Bulls began the year with the Road to Tampa Bay Tournament with back-to-back losses to No. 20 Georgia Tech and in-state rivalry to No. 11 Florida. USF picked up their two wins at another home event, the Bulls Volleyball Invitational, against Idaho State and Mercer. Maria Clara Andrade leads USF's offensive stats with 71 kills. Caroline Dykes and Kelsey O'Loughlin have both had a major impact with 98 assists and 73 assists, respectively. On the defensive side of the net, Lia Schneider tops the Bulls' roster with 72 digs. Regan Kinard, Amanda DeWitt, and Lauren Lewis have each recorded at least 12 blocks.

That will be fun! I'm sure it's like riding a bike... It will all come back to you. Just be careful with the USF player names - there seems to be a lot of international players on that team. Well, time to either get to Vermillion or buy a MidCo+ subscription, folks. Drake at 6:00 tonight is a HUGE match. This whole tournament could easily go either way. 3-0 or 0-3. They will need the fan energy in the SCSC.

Well, we are now 0-2 in 5-set matches, which happen to be our last two matches....
I'd say we saw some improvement from Sealock, though. She finally got involved in the offense in a big way, given the high volume of attacks she has taken. Could be her own improvement, could be a better synchronizing with her Freshman setter, Van Hook. Either way, this is a positive development. We need production from her if we want to challenge for another championship.
Kylen Kills/Set: ave 2.76 Kills per set before Drake match (#9 in conference) ave 3.40 Kills per set in the Drake match (#3 in conference - comparatively) ave 2.91 Kills per set including Drake match (#8 in conference)
So if she were to hit at the level of the Drake match consistently through the season, she would be one of the top hitters in the conference.
Also: All of the top hitters by K/Set right now that are above Kylen have had weak schedules, other than Ali Hinze of NDSU. I'll not be surprised to see her and Ali both in the top three by the end of the season.
Kylen Receiving Errors: ave 0.47 RE per set before Drake match ave 0.00 RE per set in Drake match ave 0.36 RE per set including Drake match

I think we are seeing a steep learning curve for Van Hook, too. Here are some interesting stats for her: Assists per set: opponent | # | Season | Iowa St | 7.33 | 7.33 | DePaul | 13.00 | 10.17 | Louisville | 3.67 | 8.00 | Missouri | 4.67 | 7.17 | NKU* | 8.40 | 7.53 | Drake* | 8.20 | 7.68 |
Blocks/Set opponent | # | Season | Iowa St | 0.33 | 0.33 | DePaul | 0.00 | 0.17 | Louisville | 0.33 | 0.22 | Missouri | 0.67 | 0.33 | NKU* | 0.60 | 0.41 | Drake* | 1.20 | 0.59 |
* = 5-set matches (tend to dilute "per set" stats) So after a couple of bad setting matches against P-5 Louisville and Mizzou, she seems to be settling in around 8.5 assists per set, which is a good number against good competition. I would expect that number to increase in conference play with lesser opponents, to put her in the top-3 in the conference. She got 6 BLOCKS in the Drake match! And you can see her blocks per set steeply increasing through the season. To me, that says she has gotten more comfortable and aggressive at the net. She also has gradually increased her aggressiveness in kill attempts and in her serving. Although that also has increased her error numbers in both areas, I don't have a problem with that. Her productivity in getting points in those areas will go up as she takes more chances, I think. To put it in other terms, she's getting scrappy/ornery. She's a lot of fun to watch, and will become a fan favorite, no doubt.
