A little surprised Broughton played, thought she was a candidate for redshirt. But it's possible she doesn't want to redshirt. Grange is probably a few weeks out. Carson is an injury situation, and her status is TBD. Bergstrom is injured, not sure of the status or prognosis. Klosterbuer was again about 9th in the rotation, but she is so offensively skilled that I think they will need her to get more minutes. Not just a deadly shooter either, her offensive game is varied. They just need to get her in some spots defensively where they can match her up. She's not terribly quick with her feet, and she's been a bit jumpy on that end and has had problems containing the dribble. But it's early. I think this squad is definitively better than last year, but I think the Creighton game will be a tough one to keep close. They hammered the Bison at the Pentagon tonight. But it will be fun to see the team grow with a lot more depth. I believe you can play in as many as four games and still redshirt. I would say that outcome is still likely for a couple players on the roster. Unless that is a recent change, I don't believe this to be the case. In football, that is true but checking into any regular season basketball game at any point in the season causes that to be considered a year.

Kayla was asked about this specifically at Lunch with the U and whether they were considering a similar rule for basketball. She said nothing is imminent at this point.

Coach K in the postgame:
On the 10 first-half turnovers: "...when we stuck to our system and played together as a unit, we were getting high-percentage shots (or at least having good outcomes of possessions). When we decided to ... abandon the offense and "do our own thing", it tended to turn into a turnover... we told everyone we needed to clean that up at halftime, and play as a unit a little bit better.... The second half is more what we would like to see."
On forcing turnovers: " ... I think Nicole AA deserves a lot of credit, although it doesn't show up on the box score.... she just puts pressure on people... She just hounded (NSU Guard Fillipi), and made things difficult, or at least was near-by her almost the entire game. She only had credit for two steals, but she had active hands, and got her hands on passes, and tipped balls, and created a lot of defensive energy for us.... I do think that that's important for us going forward."
On defensive balance and pressure: "We're trying to take that step up defensively. I think our mentality is better, we are more aggressive, more disruptive on that end of the floor. I still think we have steps to take... I love the 8-0 start... but as the game wore on, we started to get fatigued... We've got to find a way to play through that and continue to play hard on the defensive end. There's a lot of room for improvement..."

I think the defensive focus is really important for this crew. The program has been blessed with some significant tonesetters over the recent years on that end (Sjerven, Arens sisters, McKeever, Watson, McCloud, Trimboli, Hemiller, etc.) I am excited to see who kind of follows Avila-Ambrosi’s lead there and gets them back to being as good as anybody in the region on that end.

I agree. But playing that brand of defense wears on a team. Coach P mentioned that she is fine with the girls slowing down the pace a little on offense so they can give 110% on defense (heavily paraphrased). I just wonder about trying to be a team that plays with pace offensively and also is an aggressive defensive team. Is it possible to be good at both? I think something's gotta give.
I suppose one way would be with liberal player rotation. But then you have to have a deep and skilled bench. We have depth of numbers but not experience. So you are giving something up when you don't have your best players on the court all the time.
Another way would be to just have ridiculously conditioned players. Do we have that? IDK
Glad I'm not a coach.

Obviously, the faster you play the more opportunities to score there are for you and your opponents. That's a coaching decision based on your strengths and weaknesses. But I don't really care if you're getting 60 possessions or 90 possessions a game, the desire to lock in on every one, get back in transition, move your feet, help your teammates, see the floor, understand how and why offenses are attacking you, etc., is what you need. Is it harder to lock in for those extra possessions? Yeah, probably. But that's exactly why coaches tell you to rest on offense.
Every trip is its own game. How many can you win?

Tough to know what kind of team we have for sure with two middle of the road nsic contests. It seems like we want to play fast and shoot the 3. I don’t see the days of coach P style ball in our future.

Should be fun to see where they end up... well, more fun if we are winning, of course. There's a lot I don't know about basketball, but one thing I DO know is that everything is harder when you don't have depth. Right now we look a lot better in that department. Side note: Sounds like SDSU just lost another player to injury. Hilary Behrens. Down to 9 players. x.com/MattJZimmer/status/1721712745337520607?s=20

I'm definitely intrigued by the new faces, kids recovering from injury, and what we hope will be improvement of some of the role players around Larkins. As has been noted already, the big bad Jacks aren't going to be quite as big and bad this year, and the Bison are new to the role of being a frontrunner in the conference. As has also been said, however, Johnston is still the coach and there are still some pieces up there so they're not going to fall off a cliff or anything. But there's still a lot of reasons to be optimistic.
I think the Creighton game will be extremely tough for a number of reasons, but it will also be getting your toughest opponent of the season out of the way early, so you get to gauge where you are and what you need to work on with plenty of season left. If they can keep that one competitive I think it bodes well for the season. And that's a big if, but if they can keep the Creighton "Big Four" on the floor for most of that game and not iced up, drinking Gatorade and cheerleading in the third quarter I'd count it as a successful night.

I’m probably too old school with this but I believe offense wins games, but defense wins championships. I get the excitement about fast pace and shooting threes. But can’t we have both? You know just in case our threes are not dropping? Also watched sdsu, and Brooklyn Meyer is going to be a problem. She is smooth and athletic. .

Yeah, I'd expect that Meyer duo is going to pose some pretty significant issues for a lot of teams this year.
And I wholeheartedly agree. I don't see a reason that a team shouldn't be able to do both (get out and run and gun a bit but also pack that defense in on the other end).

I thought our defense was good but we will see against Creighton. State down to 9 players . Having 2 great players will hold their team together but as we found out last year its a long season to play with no bench. We had 3 players held out last night but this year we have numbers
