Interesting fact on 78 team. 3 draft picks. Schwab to Packers. Ben Long to Miami. Bill Moats as a punter to Packers. And that was the D-2 era

And that was the D-2 era The longest punt IN THE AIR I've ever seen was Bill Moats in the fall of 1977. I "think" it was against an Ohio team (don't remember which one) in Vermillion. I know it wasn't a NCC foe. It was a rocket that travelled well over 60 yards (about 70 from where he kicked it) before it touched down. Totally flipped the field.

What’s everybody’s thinking on the keys to the game Saturday?

What’s everybody’s thinking on the keys to the game Saturday? Shorten the game and take advantage of every possession. Win like we've won all year - grind it out and control the clock. Don't let them turn it into a track meet.

What’s everybody’s thinking on the keys to the game Saturday? If USD can stop NDSU’s rushing attack early, that will be a big key. because that opens up Ndsu’s entire playbook. I’m also interested in coyotes nervousness (too excited so to speak). NDSU has played at Montana St & SDSU with 20-25,000 at each within last month or so . Whereas coyotes biggest crowd is at NDSU 3 months ago and Missouri 4 months ago

You think the Yotes will be nervous playing in front of a home crowd? NDSU hasn't played particularly well in any of their "big" games this year. Lost on homecoming. Got blown out in Brookings. Snuck by an overrated MSU team.

Don't let them turn it into a track meet. NDSU moves slow on offense. They'll try to grind you out. Last game there were very few possessions because both teams on offenses grinded it out. That means offensively for USD every possession is important. No turnovers, must score points, or at the very least, flip field position, and we need to hit big plays in the pass game like we did last time. Defensively, we need to shut down their run game and get off the field on 3rd down.

I think what he’s trying to say is if USD has doubts because of the NDSU tradition and mystique. The Bison are a very confident team. Their resume indicates who they are. I’ll be first to admit in prior years when we played in the playoffs or NDSU or SDSU I was “hoping” we’d play well and sneak out a win. This team is different. We won’t lose because our guys are intimidated. If we lose it will simply be because the Bison are a better team. We’ve narrowed the gap and it keeps narrowing. If we win it will be because we’re the better team ( which I think we are ). It’s going to be an old fashioned “slobber knocker”. Who’s tougher? Who’s standing at the end of 60 minutes? If we’re fortunate enough to win, then we get next up. Whomever that is. Polls say Montana. FURMAN might have something to say about that. In either case, what a run it’s been. This team is different. They know they aren’t dominate but they know they won’t be dominated. PLEASE BE LOUD AND BOISTEROUS SATURDAY. That will add fuel to the fire.

We've already beat them in their building, and it wasn't a fluke. We backed it up with a 9-2 regular season. Just being here is not good enough. This game is a must win. Why? We lose and it's the same old, same old. USD plays little brother to the mighty XDSU's. We have to win this game to upset the pecking order in the Dakotas. To really make this season special and prove this program has arrived on the big stage. To send the message the time of the Bison is over, it's our time now.

Keys to the game:
1. Crowd needs to be loud the ENTIRE time NDSU has the ball. 2. Stop the run! Our run defense is #46 in FCS and #7 in the MVFC. We need to buck this on Saturday. Lakesbison is right. Their entire offense flows from the running game. 3. Protect the ball, and keep it out of NDSU's hands. 4. Play mistake free special teams. 5. OL needs to have their best game of the year.
I always hate the idea of saying this quarter/half is more important that another, but I did hear an interesting stat earlier in the year on an FCS podcast that most of NDSU's losses over the years have been when they have gotten down early in the game.

CE,
I’m with you. I hate the idea of having to do this or that to win the game. Always sounds good in practicality but the truth is many many games take strange twists. Then if you don’t do this or that, then you put unwanted stress or expectations that then puts undo pressure on you.
I say this, take it to the Bison in any manner they see fit, then let the game come back to you to control and finish. There might be a recipe for success but as many times as not, you need to change the plan.

Interesting fact on 78 team. 3 draft picks. Schwab to Packers. Ben Long to Miami. Bill Moats as a punter to Packers. And that was the D-2 era I recall well the 1978 team. I missed only one home game at Inman Field during the three football seasons I was in Vermillion (hurts to write these seasons down: '76, '77 and '78 -- there must be a 25-year mistake!) There are several qualities this year's Yotes have in common with the '78 team. The most notable, seems to me, is the confidence level displayed by this year's team -- I thought the 1978 team started each game knowing they had a legitimate shot at winning irrespective of the opponent. They weren't arrogant: a 1-3 start in 1978 made sure of that. By the end of the '78 season, there wasn't a noticeable weakness on the team. I think this year's team is playing with the confidence one finds on really good teams. [Well, let me backtrack: The 1978 team had a defensive end from Ida Grove, IA. I wondered about that guy. But, I guess he turned out okay: Opposing teams didn't like to use his side of the field. Okay, he is a USD Hall of Fame 2001 Inductee. Sometimes he reads this message board. Never mind.] I'll be in my seat at SDSU's game on Saturday. The Jacks will get a strong challenge from Villanova -- they've played in Brookings in December before. I will also be interested in hearing how the NDSU at USD game turns out. I think NDSU is playing some of its best football of the season and the Bison memory of losing to USD in Fargo probably hasn't faded. On the other hand, USD has established itself in the top of the conference and earned the #3 playoff seed -- no doubt the 'Yotes also remember the regular-season win in Fargo. My guess is the USD team laughs off those who want to drag up a cliche "it's hard to beat a team twice in the same season."

I saw my first game at Inman field in 71 saw many games there. I think the defense end was Dave Schwab who I ran into in Sioux Falls this summer we talked some good football stories nice guy. it would be great to have a SDSU- USD final. I see where bars around are having watch parties . It took a while for USD fans to get on board this year but seem pretty excited now.
