Jockeys on fast horses win more races. You go from a stretch of watching your program’s top ever thoroughbreds run for a decade or so, their coaches look faster too. Jimmy’s and Joes versus X’s and O’s and all that. Bad calls executed by talent can look like ‘good’ calls to an observer and great calls overwhelmed by superior talent can look like ‘bad’ calls. I’m usually pretty hesitant to make any sweeping calls on coaches/staffs unless they obviously underperform compared to their talent level repeatedly or I’m in the locker room.

NDSU was very athletic and long. They had great energy and an outstanding point guard that controlled the team offensively. We did not match their athleticism on the floor. We can’t control that, but I would have liked to see us control the things we could. We didn’t seem to have an offensive purpose. Defense looked like it was a second thought. Poor communication on the floor. It looked like because we couldn’t get a 3pt shot we got frustrated. I would love to see more ball movement. The other thing I have thought all year that is missing is energy or that feeling of playing for the name on your jersey. Someone mentioned M. Hanson’s energy and this is just my opinion, besides the fact that she is a senior she wants to play for this university and it means something to her. I am not saying that’s a reason for her role to be different. It would just be nice to get that feeling from the girls that are getting the big minutes. I think the transfer portal has created a disconnect in that respect to team cohesiveness. I see the usefulness in the transfer portal, but I think we have to be cognizant to its effects too. Today is a new day with new opportunities and I will continue to watch and cheer for these girls.

I do agree we lack some athleticism. However I refuse to believe that NDSU is longer and more athletic than DePaul, Arizona, and Michigan. I watched all those games and we did not look as outmatched as we did last night. Which I think was from a lack of player effort and any type of game plan that allowed us to beat their ball pressure. NDSU played with more force and effort. A couple questions I have. Has this team gotten better from the beginning of the season? What are we trying to accomplish on offense? We play lineups and then it doesn’t seem like we play to those lineups strengths. That is as far as I want to take the coaching criticism at this point. Last comment I have, they are still 18-23 years olds. Sometimes these games happen.

Good coaches develop and get the best out their teams on both ends of the floor. I am an excitable fan but also understand patience in the name of progress. I have seen little if any progress from this group. Talent is better this year but we have no offensive identity and defensive effort is lacking individually and as a team. It really makes me wonder what practices look like.
I am not there and only watch from afar but the other alum/fans I talk to pretty much say the same thing. You either need to recruit superior talent or be able to maximize what talent you have to have any chance at this level. The best coaching staffs do both. We have neither. I'll be happy to eat crow if somehow it all comes together this year or next. As I sit today I am highly skeptical.

I’m certainly not telling anybody whether they should be optimistic or pessimistic regarding the Karius regime.
As has been alluded, though, they need to find the next great (or two) on the recruiting trail at some point. Larkins is very good. But she needs some more reliable help.

We’ve gotta be able to keep her and others out of the portal, that could be our next problem if the season doesn’t end like we and they want it to. As others have pointed out only a few play for the school a lot of them are playing for themselves.
