I think the weak competition in the Great West really hurt USD. They aren't used to the brutal schedule and high level of competition every night where every team has strengths. I'm not sure where their RPI will be after tonight but at 0-4 I looked and they would have been third in the Great West and all of them are similar in RPI. From Houston at 251 to Utah Valley at 288 to the rest in the low 300's with USD at 305.
Look at Gruis always in foul trouble. He just needs to adjust to the faster and more athletic posts and forwards that he didn't see last year. Just some thoughts.

Boots should be disappointed! I'm very disappointed. He quit coaching the last several minutes of the game. All of the players lacked intensity, they did not care, it was very obvious tonight. Coaches and players are all to blame. Poor passing, poor shot selection and poor rebounding. This was the worst game ever! This is a depressed team and coaching staff! This is D-1 ball. WAKE UP! GET WITH IT! MAN UP! PLAY BALL!

You guys are an improvement over Centenary, but not a very big one. Being competitive and a winner in DI is a different type of thing than it was for you in DII. You are located in Vermillion, South Dakota. The other three Dakota schools will be able to outrecruit you on that fact alone. You are the most arrogant fan base in the 5 state area. Go back to BUFFALOVILLE

I agree that Bison fans are kind of arrogant but they are also doing some things right now in D1. Their basketball team has already been to the NCAA tourney and had about 15K fans show up to their game. Now they have a football championship game on their resume. During the Bison's last year of transition they were way better in athletics than what USD is right now.
If it took an arrogant fan base at USD for the Coyotes to really start winning in most sports I would rather be arrogant and watch a winner than be goody two shoes and watch mediocre to bad sports.
Arrogance or not USD needs WAY, WAY, WAY more fan participation in multiple ways than what we are seeing. I am all for D1 but in all honestly most Coyote Fans were more excited about the D2 days. I don't understand why the fan base is so lethargic other than for football.

Where were the Bison and Sioux fans claiming that it is difficult to win in a small town when USD and SDSU were both winning consistantly over UND and NDSU in mens basketball for most of the past 15 years when in D2. It wasn't a factor then and should not be now either.

I have refrained from commenting on the basketball season so far as I have nothing good to say. You guys know I am not a basketball guy so I have no idea what the problem is but I know one thing, this team is either really bad, or is playing really bad. It's either a talent thing, a depth thing, or an effort thing. I'll leave it to the rest of you to decipher what the problem is.

It's either a talent thing, a depth thing, or an effort thing. I'll leave it to the rest of you to decipher what the problem is. This is not specifically to isolate you in particular but if everyone refrained from comment (which is just about where we are at) when they have nothing good to say than how is anyone to know what is acceptable and not acceptable. If everyone just cowers and doesn't say anything but instead just doesn't show up to games or participate that would probably be considered a bad thing. Just because SDSU had a very rough transition for basketball doesn't mean that is the status quo or that it is acceptable for USD to follow the same path. NDSU had a pretty good transition for basketball so it's not like it's impossible to be good at it by now. I know I beat this to death but would NDSU fans be accepting of a transition in football along the same path that UNC followed. Would they be accepting of the same transitioning path in basketball that SDSU followed. No and No to both. USD can't use the worse case senario and make it ok because another school did it that way. They gotta look towards compatring with the best case senario. That is what NDSU has done except for Women's basketball. If I saw a Coyote basketball team bust their tails night in and night out and just be simply overmatched I could live with that. I rarely see USD play with the kind of emotion they need to play with to be competitive. On the Women's side I ususally see a high emotion and that is why it's so much easier to accept their results win or lose. For whatever reason the men just aren't displaying an undivided will to win. They had their first home Summit game and came out flat which just doesn't seem right to me. Hasn't the Summit be the aiming point for a couple of years. I would think I would have seen a team that looked like they had been shot out of a cannon. Do you think USD's athletic department just wants their fans to stay silent during the down times when that silence more often than not includes seperating themselves from Coyote athletics. Is it better to stay silent and stay away or kind of be a bit on the angry side but still stay in touch and/or come to games. In other words what would be better. 500 fans showing up and little to no one shows emotion. Or 3000 fans showing up but having maybe a vocal 20% do a bit of booing when things aren't going well but also have those same people cheering their asses off when things are going well. It's better to have fans as involved with athletics as possible. I don't see how anyone could really dispute that.

I refrained from commenting because I have seen very few games and I know little about basketball...meaning I know I don't know what I am talking about. All I know is that this is the worst results (wins vs losses) I have seen out of USD basketball.
I do feel one thing is true, playing in the Great West did little to prepare us for a decent D1 basketball conference.
