And State didn't need to play a 'home' game in Sioux Falls for the money. No, but the people in Brookings did lose their crap when a billboard was put up because they never thought about purchasing it themselves..... Interesting comment but I think you may be wrong. There's little value in SDSU purchasing a billboard at one of the Brookings exits but I understand there may be value for USD to purchase billboard space at a Brookings interstate exit. I think most people in Brookings found it amusing. USD's marketing people had some goals in mind when selecting that space including some friendly pot-stirring to create interest for the game. I'm predicting a record-setting crowd.

I wonder if part of the deal is you switch to Sanford or we don't help in the future. I THOUGHT that I read that the OI was going to give more than Sanford but you needed to look at the working relationship not just the money. I guess the Dykhouse Center was already paid for but a new stadium will cost a lot. NDSU and SDSU didn't have Sanford as their lead provider of medical services like USD does but I can't see Sanford not doing the same thing there. It took me about 6 months to see that billboard. I've seen it once and that's it. I didn't get too shook up over it but I guess it gets some people riled up.

Congrats. Looks like a great all purpose facility. I look forward to seeing it in person.

Are my calculations correct? SDSU commitments of $18 million vs South Dakota $29 million....interesting!? Did you also compare total cost of projects? SDSU plans on having the full-project costs in hand by the October Regents meeting and construction will start Spring, 2013. I do not know the timeline for USD's fund-raising effort for its project but $50 million may take a while. Incidently, SDSU just exceeded $200 million in its latest big fundraiser. You know how it works: now USD will announce an even bigger one, followed by SDSU, followed by USD, followed by SDSU etc. It's just money.

True and true Jack JD.
I was in attendance for President Abbott's inauguration in the fall of '97, my freshman year, when the first mention was made of launching the Campaign SD with a stated fundraising goal of $60 million in ten years time. I remember listening to President Abbott speak that day and being blown away at how ambitious that goal sounded and privately thinking that it couldn't possibly be achieved in South Dakota. Oh what a difference a college education and a few years made in broadening my perspective. When that campaign was concluded in May of 2007, USD had raised over $133 million while at the same time transforming the USD campus.
It was no coincidence that SDSU came out and announced their goal of raising $200 million after USD had concluded its campaign. It was in April of 2008 that SDSU increased their stated fundraising goal from $175 million to $190 million and then to $200 million that October. After all it was SDSU's "Visions for the Future" campaign from 1994-1998 that had a stated goal of $50 million and raised $52 that actually preceded the USD effort. There have been similiar back and forth efforts since the schools were founded.
As you said, both schools will seek to continually outdo one another in the future, but for me Campaign SD was one reason I fell in love with USD. Not because we were competing against SDSU, but because that goal was the largest undertaking by either school in state history and I simply didn't believe it could be achieved until it had, and then some. While all the bad blood and negative comments were traded on fan boards and elsewhere during the transition years, I always took a little peace from that fact. For the moment again, the balance has tipped SDSU's way, but as history has shown, the pendulum always swings back and forth.
In the end, regardless of who has the current edge in the game of one-upsmanship, we as taxpayers, benefactors, fans, and students of our beloved institutions have and will continue to all benefit from such efforts in the long run.

Shoot, this won't take a while. I've heard most of the $50 million project cost was pretty much already lined up, this Sanford deal is the lead donor and a big chunk. Can expect ground to start breaking within the year.
Also, part of us selling a football game to Sioux Falls every year is a significant annual contribution by Sanford to the athletic dept. I won't name numbers but it is significant.
Now, I could post how Sanford is buying the athletic dept. Or I could read the press release in conjunction with this donation and conclude that Sanford is truly trying to partner with USD. Not just in athletics, but in medicine, sports medicine, and the business school. Sanford knows where its next best and brightest employees are going to come from, the U. I conclude Sanford is making an investment in South Dakota higher education, and USD, to ensure it has an educated pool to draw employees from.
Look, Sanford has given money to all the MAJOR Dakota schools, USD, SDSU, and NDSU but the numbers are telling me they have put a much bigger investment into USD.

Short of changing the name of the school or the nickname Sanford can sponer and give money towards anything it wants and I would have no problem with it. If USD has to move a football game to Sioux Falls every year and a basketball game or two that should be fine with the USD community. Sanford has the cash and USD needs it. The sacrifise is minimal considering the financial gains that come from those sacrafises. Just look at the photo of the basketball arena and tell me that you have a problem driving to Sioux Falls for an extra game or two.
