I'm surprised Mick even attended media day. He just goes through the motions when it comes to covering USD and doesn't try to do anything over the bare requirements. I don't think it is all on the sports editor. Mick doesn't care and it shows. His sportschat online is perfect example. He never has any insight and you ask him some basic questions and he has no answers. The next week the same basic question is asked and he never follows through. Sorry Mick, good guy or not, the above is the truth. Agreed completely.

Hate to say it, but I agree. Totally unacceptable there was no USD story in today's paper.

The Sioux City Journal usually does a much better job at covering the Coyotes. Probably wouldn't be a bad idea for the Coyotes to focus a little more attention down south because I think it is much more appreciated.

The Journal down there could really step it up though. Rarely ever see anything from a writer about USD, other than occasional football games and press conferences. Can't say I regularly check out the site though, maybe i am way way off

The Journal has stepped it up a lot and has stories after every game that I have seen.

Are you sure they are not press releases from USD media that the SCJ runs?

It might be, but I will say that Barry Poe has done a decent job of writing some human interest stories for the Coyotes. I know Barry from 25 years ago when we were both starting out.
I really do think that even though Sioux City is in Iowa, USD is missing the boat on marketing and branding Ciyote sports there. When you stop and think about it, Iowans on average are a lot more fired up for athletics that South Dakotans, and I think that is due to the state having 3 D-1 schools. However, the logistics are that UNI is the closest, and that is probably 3-4 hours away. I guess Ames would be 3 hours, but my point being I think SC could provide a solid fan base if catered and marketed to, and they are only 30 minutes away. But I have always felt that way.

Yep. As a former Sioux City resident, I totally agree marketing to Sioux City is important. There are so many connections to that town from Morningside being a former conference foe, to the abundance of athletes that have come out of Sioux City to USD, to the sheer number of USD grads in Sioux City. It only makes sense we market that area heavily.
Right now there are multiple billboards in Sioux City (even marketing the NDSU game), there are ads all over the Southern Hills mall promoting USD (at least there used to be), and the athletic dept (I know for fact) has extended an offer to Iowa, ISU, I believe Creighton, and possibly UNI to play a basketball game at the Tyson Events Center. They have all declined so far.
I don't know how much more we can ask them to do in that market. I believe they are doing an adequate job. Even still, I come across people there who do not even know Vermillion is so close to Sioux City and have no idea the University is so near them. Some people are just oblivious to their surroundings, you just can't get to everyone.
