I realize the topic of Argus coverage has been beaten to death on here, but it was obvious nobody from the Argus had travelled with the men or women's basketball teams for these past three road games, nor does it appear that anyone at the sport's desk even knew they were taking place. Not one word in the online edition on any of the six games, but the RC Journal and the P&D both manage to carry articles. Bunny games get full coverage though even when they're on the road. Tea High School has more articles up on the online sports section than USD does last time I checked. I hope their faithful can keep the Argus afloat because I'm done and I'll be the third one in my family to go. Too many news sources out there to pay for what has become a sad relic of the past. <iframe width="28.420000000000073" height="3.8799999999999955" style="position: absolute; width: 28.420000000000073px; height: 3.8799999999999955px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none;left: 15px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_12610127" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="28.420000000000073" height="3.8799999999999955" style="position: absolute; width: 28.42px; height: 3.88px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1356px; top: -5px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_7737340" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="28.420000000000073" height="3.8799999999999955" style="position: absolute; width: 28.42px; height: 3.88px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 15px; top: 134px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_64394373" scrolling="no"></iframe> <iframe width="28.420000000000073" height="3.8799999999999955" style="position: absolute; width: 28.42px; height: 3.88px; z-index: -9999; border-style: none; left: 1356px; top: 134px;" id="MoatPxIOPT0_95141092" scrolling="no"></iframe> Zimmer doesn't travel with SDSU basketball.

I would challenge that as well since the recaps often do not show up even 2 days after the game on the road. It would be at least a weak acknowledgement with an AP release of the results. That would belong to the straw boss in the sports arena to have a minimum coverage. They do that most days for the Top 25 scores. Argus does not seem to have coverage in the primary directive as they have also diminished the editorial section as well as the university sports.

I'll give the new guy a chance. I've got nothing to lose, and he is of a different generation, so maybe there will be more insights/content. That said, as Zim pointed out in his chat, the Yotes are just one of Brian's beats, and it is likely that HS sports stays his main focus.
Writer's style aside, I wonder to what extent the triangle that Vermillion sits in isn't a big reason the metrics at the Argus are not great. Reality is that Vermillion is 30 miles from the P&D, 40 miles from the SCJ, and 60 miles from the Argus - the daily readers/clicks are being shared by 3 outlets, and two of them are 'more local' than the Argus.

Comparison: SDSU played UND a short while back the feature story in the online edition was Daum leading the men to victory complete with a picture. USD played in Grand Forks on Wednesday and I'm still waiting for mention of it in the online edition. I don't receive a hardcopy so I have no idea how that's handled. If you check out the online sports the last basketball game covered was the USD men vs Ft Wayne. To me that's complete indifference, which is their prerogative, but I can also choose to take my business elsewhere.

The Argus internet site may bring more information earlier. The edition online which replicates the hard copy for regular subscribers lacks much of current or recent news. The hard copy never lists any of the Midco broadcasts under College Basketball on the Air section of the Scoreboard lineup. It seems the Gannett News Group has a very small interest in any news that originates outside of SF. They have recently added USA Today added to the subscription since it has become so thin.

I didn't even notice because for any USD news I come here with the Sioux City Journal being the #2 source.
I think SCJ coverage is very important. I have noticed a big uptick in USD gear sightings in NW Iowa over the last few years. With in-state tuition for Iowa residents a thing now we can own this area along with NE Nebraska.

Zimmer flat out said the Argus is going to focus on SDSU and smatter in USD when they can. That's enough for me to cross them off my list

Well, it's just up to the teams to force them to not ignore us. Throw down a few National Championship runs and some deep Big Dance runs. Then see if they ignore The U.

Zimmer basically said on his chat that the Argus was going to put its emphasis where they received the most reader interest. What you need to do as a fan base is demonstrate your interest is coverage by increasing your "hits" on the USD stories. In other words it is up to you as a fan base as much or more than the teams to maintain the coverage. If you desert the Argus coverage you only speed up the process of reduced coverage.

Good point, but it's also hard to "hit" something that isn't there. I'm not a business person, but I would think a business would do things to entice customers rather than expecting customers to please the business unless the Argus business model is the soup nazi.

THIS....Customers shouldn’t have to bring a business to the business. Business brings the product to the customer. People it’s time to endorse Barry Poe and the Sioux City Journal

The Press & Dakotan is a very good scource for USD sports coverage. I am not even a subscriber but have there app on my devices for free. I pay for an online Argus subscription and it sucks. So tired of sifting through bunny news to find a few tidbits of Coyote news. The Argus is definitely NOT South Dakota's newspaper! I wish them a slow and agonizing death, which seems to be what is happening. Ok my rant is over!

This is the type of thing that can win over readers - just a smattering of various tidbits of stuff going in in the program. Plus, nails it with the SL schedule/travel.
