Check player minutes and tell me you don't think something stands out and it will also explain some of our defense problems!

I agree Yotemeal. The press break was not good. I listened to the game on the radio and by the sounds of it our starting center brought the ball across the timeline half the time. He shouldnt be the only guy on the team who can get the ball up the court. but aside from the press break i think our biggest weakness is still rebounding which is directly linked to that zone. We wouldnt have to score as many points to win a game if we didnt give up 20+ offensive boards in a game. It hard to win a game when the oposing team has twice as many possesions to try and score. From one who watched the game, I can tell you this wasn't the case. Wouldn't be shocked if VanGore's play by play was lacking in detail.

Dude, seriousy do you ever add anything of substance to this board. Go back and look at your last half dozen posts. There is never anything that suggests that you know much about the athletic department. I am still waiting on your response when I asked you to analyse the football season but of course you have no analysis because you don't know much about it.

I see substance in his post coyotefan. He said he watched the game and as one who has listened to van gore enough, he can be lacking. Tread very, very lightly on that unprovoked attack since it wasn't even. A response to one of your posts.

Rebounding is a key stat, Coach Boots mentions it often in discussing Coyotes future success. If you notice, we won the rebounding stats in the Summit League games, and have mostly only been beaten badly on the boards by the Gonzaga, Wyoming and Iowa type teams. Iowa had a 7 footer, in addition to White who was giving Gruis a tough night's work by himself. It remains to be seen, but I think we can hold our own in the Summit!

But even against those teams the rebounding margin shouldnt be that far apart. If everyone was allowed to guard a single guy it would be a whole lot easier to find a body and get the rebound. Ask anyone who has played, coached or even just follow basketball, it is so much tougher to rebound out of a zone. The game that sticks out in my mind is Western Illinois. I was at the game and it was painfully obvious that our man defense suits this team much better. We were playing zone defense and we were getting beat all game long, then we switched to man, cleaned up the boards, and turned a grind it out 50 to 45 game into a 70 some point barn burner. All because we were able to rebound and get out in transition. Westen illinois is a quality summit team and we proved that we can hang with them. Now lets take that game plan and use it to move up in the summit and prove that we belong.

I find it hard to believe Boots cant see the lack of boxing out is a glaring problem in our game. I am becoming more convinced he does not care any more. He wants to play a bench player that cannot play any defense (zone or man) and Boots is going to give him minutes regardless if it cost the team or program. Watch closely at any game and you will note who gets beat on defense time and time again (both on zone and man) and when the other players try to clean up the mess and get a foul or let the opponent through to score, note who boots chews out and replaces (its not the bench player that lost his guy). If Boots would tell his players to each get a body to box out after every shot, get the rebound, then go, I wonder what would happen. Apparently the Iowa coach understands the basics of basketball as its sounded like his players box out, got the board, and played hard with intensity. I will say it again, we will never win a game in div 1(of a quality opponent) playing a zone defense.

I don't need to write 10K words to add substance. What I said was direct, concise and accurate. I watched the game. Gruis was not the only one that brought the ball across half court. Our ball control is fine. We are young, raw and talented. We need to gel. Chemistry is the missing link. My other two concerns with this team are the amount of time that Boots sees the court and the lack of development with our 6'10" C over the course of 3 years. I am not convinced that Boots knows how to develop bigs. They seem to come in with the same talent that they leave with. At the end of the day, all this season is good for is prep for the Summit tourney. That is all that matters. If we can develop and gel, all you need to do is get hot for 3 days. If that happens you are dancing in the NCAA tourney. That is all that matters. I am not going to go into a diatribe about my fan credibility. That is the crap you do. When you have to tell people about it, you don't have it. Plain and simple.

Yeah, Gonzaga was playing amazing when USD played them, and Iowa does have some height. But rebounding is always big and I completely agree.

FWIW, Iowa fans are very high on Iowa basketball this season and what Fran is building there. Most are of the opinion they should be a Top 20 team by next season. Don't know about the truth in that opinion but it's been a long time since there was hope in that program. They seem to be turning the corner.
