Why did we loose this game? Wonder what their shooting percentage was compared to normal? Is it because our players aren't as talented as the worst team in the league ? I am just wondering what others thoughts are as to why we lost? Oh well maybe next year, I am sure it will be better.

95 points by the mavs-that is a bunch of offense. They shot 56% from the filed. Were they that great or was there no defense? Of course 90 points by the yotes is load of points too!

The Coyotes are just not lengthy enough to play good defense. They are relying on the zone partially because of height definciencies. Omaha was making alot of shots and also making alot of wide open shots. It was a combination of poor defense and hot shooting. The Coyotes should play more aggressive on D to try to create turnovers because otherwise they will get shot over and not fair well on the glass either. Still, USD has got to win games like this. Why is it that this team is playing better on the road vs home. You would think with a young team it would be the opposite. The lack of a good loud home environment might be making the Yotes stale as well.
I think the Coyotes will play better in the Sioux Falls arena than they are now playing in the dome. The goal should be to avoid playing one of the top 3 NDSU, WI, SDSU in the first round. If the Yotes finish 5th or higher they can do that. Winning against UNO would have really helped but now things are complicated again. That was a huge loss today because it's going to be difficult just to get a split next weekend. Two losses puts the Yotes at 4-7 in the league and closer to 6th or 7th in the league vs 4th or 5th.

USD needs a coach that can recruit and coach defense. I am sorry, I don't care if the team is lacking the ability to play defense because the should've been known in the recruiting process.
How can a team beat SDSU and Oakland but give up so many points to UMKC and Omaha? I just don't get it. Youth can be an excuse all that Boots wants along with playing for next year, but this team is more talented than UMKC and Oakland. It is time for a change, honestly.

Looking back at last nights game (and the past fifteen years for that matter) I have come to the conclusion that there is no doubt what coach Boots' style is going to be till he retires.
When you stop to think about it, watching a family member play ball should be a very good indicator of what they were taught at home about the game of basketball. All parents have an opinion of how the game should be played and try to influence those factors on their children.
When you watch Jordan play ball it is exactly like what coach Boots' teaches. When Jordan enters the game, he is there to do one thing and that is shoot the three (which he is good at). I do not think Jordan's' defensive skills are all that good (same as several of his teammates). I do not know if in all the years I have watched him play that I have ever seen him ( or most of his teammates) box out (when I say box out I mean literally put your body in front of the opponent and keep them away from any ball that falls in front of you till you or your teammate has a chance to obtain possession of the ball) and go after a rebound. Jordan is quite proficient at getting open and shooting the three.
Now take a look at the style of basketball USD plays. They want to shoot the three, period. They do not believe in an inside game at all. Gruis is sent out to the three point line to do a pick and roll. Six times out of ten he will roll to the basket wide open and never see the ball (other players are taught to look for the three not pass). Even the basics of the screen are not taught well, our guards are dribbling past the pick five feet away, not even remotely loosing their defender on the screen. Then when we run into a team that has been taught to play good defense and can stop the three , we resort to driving in amongst the trees and throwing up a wing and a prayer for a shot. But yet with all that said we are a leading scoring team in the conference, but continue to loose games.
I guess the point I am trying to make is that if your goal is to be the highest scoring team in the league, we are there. I am still convinced that the real goal should be to get to the big dance, and that only happens by TEACHING good defense.
It was kind of comical watching last nights game. From the opening tip you knew what their strategy was. Omaha was going to shoot the three ball all night as it would be uncontested by our zone, and allow lots of open looks. They also chose to play very aggressive defense on our three point shooters to try to limit that part of our game. Really good odds that we will try nothing different to change it up. We patiently squat down on the sideline as the game goes on in bewilderment as to what is going wrong.
If I were a betting woman I would say the vast majority of the coaches in div 1 know that the real game is played on the defensive end of the court. I will also bet you that you could never convince coach Boots of that. I WILL SAY IT ONE MORE TIME, GAMES ARE WON WITH OFFENSE, CHAMPIONSHIPS ARE WON WITH DEFENSE.
I guess it is up to Herbster, does he want to win games or championships?

I am going to defend Boots. Is everything perfect right now, no it isn't. Is this basketball team better this year than it was last, IMO that is a resounding yes. I am a little annoyed by the lack of inconsistency as are the players, as are the fans as is the coach. Winning over Oakland speaks for itself. Winning over SDSU again speaks for itself. If I had to choose I would rather have a team capable of beating some of the mid level and upper level Summit teams (even with the consistancy problems) vs having a team that will beat the 6th-8th teams everytime but not have the upside to beat the top teams. That type of team won't do anything in the tourney. This years team can be a threat in Sioux Falls. Playing potentially 3 games in 4 days has me more concerned than just the inconsistancies.
The Yotes have to play to their strenghts and make other teams adjust. The good thing about the atmosphere in Sioux Falls is that it is good for an uptempo game which should be one the Yotes thrive in. This year Boot's has done a good job IMO, but I can also understand those that may not agree with that. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I believe the team we have now has a good chance to be a top 3 Summit team next year. When the Jacks lose Wolters I don't think we are going to have to give up anything in being able to stay with them or other teams.
It's all about consistency right now. It's a must that the Yotes not have letdown moments as drastic as they have been. I think we will be alright as long as we keep playing well on the road.

Can't win enough games to compete for a title if you can't hold the worst teams in the league under 90 points. I think this year's team is worse because even though they beat SDSU and Oakland, it makes the horrible losses even more disappointing.
This team shows up for two games so far this year in conference, but they cannot get up enough for the other games? This year has been bad so far.

2 games in conference, I guess someone isn't paying attention. The Yotes have showed up for the game in Omaha, the game at home vs IUPUI, the game at home vs Western Illinois despite it being a loss. They also made a decent showing at IPFW.
People can argue that Boot's didn't do a great job in some of the years past. This year that is a tough argument. Maybe I am in the minority but I would rather have a team that at least has a punchers chance at the Summit Tourney and the Yotes do have that this year if they can get through 3 games in 4 days. Last years team would have had virtually no chance at the tourney. The Coyotes seem to mostly show up for the big games which is a good thing. There is no way that last year's team is better than this year's addition.
I can understand somewhat the inconsistancies but it has gotten a bit more out of hand than anyone would like. I am open to any kind of discussion when it comes to who should be coaching and stuff like that. Right now Boot's has a resolve about him that I kind of like. He is very much no nonsense and is understanding what needs to be done. I support him at this point in time. If the Yotes have a serious regression next year and maybe the year after, yes he should be on the hot seat. As of now this team is continuing to improve and I will sure as heck take this over what another program gave us this year. CF#1 you say I don't know anything about sports. Well I will say that I think this years team is much better than last years version. Last year they played most games like they are now currently playing their poorer games. The upside is way higher this year. You and I are once again on opposite sides of the fence. You can have last years team.

USD is 4-5 in the conference and three of those losses have come to three teams below them in the standings and they gave up 90 points to 2 of those teams. I guess if that's what you define as success. I am just confused. You rail against the failings of the football program, but the basketball team continually says they are playing for next year and you continue to give them a free pass. Just confusing I guess on your track record.
If the progress for this year was to look at the scores, then good for you. Right now, USD is one win short of what they were last year in the Summit, which seems good right now.
But by looking at the schedule, it is difficult to say if USD can finish with a better record than they did last year.
at SDSU, at NDSU, home against Oakland, home against Fort Wayne, at IUPUI, at Western Illinois.
Given how USD has played and previous games so far this year, IUPUI will be a win but after that, can USD beat Fort Wayne? Given USD's track record, they are set to give up 90-95 points to Fort Wayne and I think Oakland can do the same to USD in the Dome. SDSU and NDSU could easily beat up on USD on their own home court and Western Illinois at their place? Very iffy.
Is it a successful season if USD finishes with the same Summit record they had last year? To me, that is not a success.
And for the record, I never said I wanted last year's team. I don't think this year's team is better or worse than last year, I think it is more talented but they are not playing up to it, making it a more disappointing season.
Also for the record, I was not a fan of the coaching or team last year.
If this was the football team, you would be all over it. Don't get what the difference is for you is all.

CF#1 "I think this year's team is worse because even though they beat SDSU and Oakland, it makes the horrible losses even more disappointing".
If you think this years team is worse I would have to believe that you would take last years team. What am I missing.
Just compare the football and basketball and there is no comparison. This years basketball team started 4-4 if the football team would have started 4-4 instead of 0-8 I would have likely been fairly elated and that is with a .500 record. Just look at where they came from. USD football went from a fairly tough GWFC to a fairly tough MVFC. I would give the Valley the edge but the jump up in level from the GWC in basketball to the Summit is a bigger jump.
In the GWC in basketball USD had a conference title. In football in a 5 or 6 team conference they were not able to do that. The football team went backwards about 50 steps this year. In basketball a significant step forward despite small backwards steps. At least the basketball team did take those steps forward. Not so in football. Back steps at every turn. I don't have an agenda in any way shape or form. I make my opinions on what I see, not what others see and tell me I am supposed to think. USD football wasn't even able to compete with the better conference teams. Basketball can do that for sure. I really don't need to go any further.

Oh and another things for comparison despite me saying I don't need to go further. Just look at the track record of road play. The football team hasn't been able to do squat away from home. Basketball has been more than ok this year in conference road games. I put alot of weight into road play. It shows the true character of a team IMO. USD football gets a major boost at home that basketball doesn't get. Basketball doesn't need the home field/court advantage like football needs.
It doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why I am as hard as I am on football. Many of the attributes are not only poor but the team is very frustrating to be a fan of the football program. How many 4th quarter collapses can one take.
I am simply an equal opportunity poster.

Are you seriously comparing GWC football and GWC basketball? Bragging about beating Houston Baptist, Texas Pan Am, NJ Tech, Utah Valley.....did i forget anyone? Im not sure thats something to be proud of if your bashing the football team because they couldnt beat Cal Poly, UC Davis, So Utah. I think an NAIA team could have won the GWC basketball with the teams that were there.

2-7 on the road is a pretty bad number right there, and they are allowing 90 points at home. In no time did I ever say I would take last year's team Coyotefan. I think there has been little to no progress made from last year with a more talented team. Like I said, you can be happy with wins over SDSU and Oakland, but that is all you are really basing your season on so far.
Also, you talk about this year's football team. You were banging the drum about how disappointed you were in the football team well before last year, honestly. You were calling for it the year before.
Yeah, the Yotes won a conference title in the GWC, but that isn't exactly setting the world on fire. Are those teams that USD beat, are they better than UMKC, honestly? or Omaha?
