Thanks Coach Boots for all your contributions to USD. I'm still in shell shock, so not sure what else to say at this point.

I think I will reserve my thanks until after I hear his reasons for leaving and timing. Right now all implications are that the AD was caught off guard.

AD was caught off guard. I understand he came into David's office this morning and sprung the news. I understand he has personal reasons, I will not comment publicly on those. I was told he met with the team today, and that was understandably emotional. You can tell that by the current team's tweets on the goyotes site. Personal opinion, but guessing he just lost some of that personal drive. Timing is terrible, but I'm not going to say anything bad about Boots. He IS the reason USD BB has been successful for 25 years. I wish him and his family well in the future.

Dave deserves the right to retire when he wants to retire. The timing may not have been perfect but a decision like this isn't something that necessarily is always thought out in advance. The time was probably just right. I would rather that he retire now than be a lame duck coach that may not have the drive to make it through the season. I congratulate Boots on all the successful years he had at USD.
Hopefully a national search will happen and we go forward in the best possible direction.

Sorry, at this point, there are no good candidates available to come in on short notice and take over a D1 program. Utterly classless move in my opinion.

The timing of this is just really odd. I had heard he had been contemplating retirement for a few years but right before the season starts? Weird. Definitely throwing his coaching staff, or whoever is left, into the fire. What about those players who committed on Signing Day? Goes to show you, these kids need to pick where they play based on the school, not in the coach who can be here today and gone tomorrow.

Not totally unexpected.

Wouldn't surprise me if the reason why he waited till now to do it was to give James a better chance at getting the job. Because they're not gonna have time to go out and hire someone and so I would assume James becomes interim for the year. Which basically gives him first dibs at the full time job. If Boots retired more in the off season James would have to contend with coaches who would probably would have had much more hc experience and resumes. At least, now he's got a better chance to earn his way to a full time job. Just my thoughts.

I agree with coyotega...very classless move. Boots made a comment in his statement how much appreciated and enjoyed working with Coach James and Kassin, but the timing of this does not reflect that statement. If they decide to go with an interim coach this season, I think we would better served with Coach Williams at the helm vs. James...in my opinion. The one thing that we can't lose sight of is that Herbster now has the opportunity to hire a true Division 1 coach to lead our men's basketball team and I have all the confidence in the world that he will find the right fit.

Boots has been grooming James for years. Joey has stuck around this program when he could have pursued other DII head jobs or assistant positions at other schools. I would be shcoked if anyone other than James took over. A very capable, knowledgeable coach who will get his shot for at minimal one year. A national search would be a waste of time at this point with the season starting in a month. Also, its hard to call a guy classless who is retiring to spend more time with family, etc. He's retiring for the right reasons, just not necesarrily at the right time for the program. Im as big of Boots critic as any, but I have no problem with him going out now. He's leaving the new coach in much better shape than he would have say 2-3 years ago.

I am convinced that James need to be the interim coach this season, but I see no reason not to have conduct a national search for the 2014-15 season - barring a Summit League Championship from James. I will not consider that to be unrealistic, but it is unlikely.
The ONLY acceptable exception to the above, in my mind, would be if Nate Tibbetts would come back to Vermillion, which I highly doubt will happen.
