...go to FBS and get their teeth kicked in. They'd be an also-ran, a MAC like school that gets absolutely no pub. Northern Illinois has gone on a great 2 year run in football, you hear very little about it. They talk about Boise State, where are they now? Unsustainable success.
A few years ago the Bison were struggling in football. Their attendance reflected that, fans weren't showing up en masse like they are now. Move to FBS and start going 7-5, 6-6 and the fans and support will drop, and then you will be just another school on the ticker. If the FargoDome was sold out every game when that team was not winning FCS titles I would agree, move up, but that wasn't happening.
I don't think NDSU could sustain its success at the FBS level. For every Boise there are 10 Idahos.

Let's see how life after Bohl goes. It's been a while since anyone besides Craig Bohl has been head coach up there, and they were immensely fortunate to have him. He's gone now, though there is plenty of young talent, we have yet to see how his successor handles things.
As you guys said, when they were struggling very recently, there was not much support. I don't think their fans would get excited about an 8-4 season in the MAC and a birth in the Liberty Bowl, which is about as high as I could ever see them ascending. I wouldn't recommend a move up. Huge fish in a small pond is way more fun than the shrimp in an ocean they'd be at the FBS.

A quick analyzation and I think you could conclude that they won't go. However, I think it's a strong possibility they will, and here's why.
1.) With their new economy unfolding in the state, oil revenue is going to be huge. Money from both the private and public sector will be on the rise. Combine that with a possible mindset they want to increase the credibility of its colleges and universities, one of the quickest ways to do it through a nationally recognized athletic department.
2.) As much as I want pass them by on the field, gym, etc...they have it rolling. They are nationally recognized. NCAA championship, basketball team now in the top 32 in the country, a rabid fan base, and the fact they were the selected top spot for COLLEGE GAMEDAY.
3.) They have a lot going for them, with momentum. To make the move 5 years from now might be riskier.
4.) Their overall institutional ego says to me they think they are better than the other schools in the Dakotas. By making this move, it would be trying to make a statement.
The only downfall I see is a legitimate league that would want them. Many reasons for schools to not vote them in.
This school is one I said 3-4 years ago to watch and learn. But if we never mobilize our fan base we will never compete with them on a consistent basis. I am a huge believer this has to be done before we do anything else.

Obviously it is their decision but I think they are getting way too excited about recent success. After losing this year's 24 seniors in football, as I've said before. I think they will have a very good FB team but it won't be great right away. Same thing can be said about their men's BB team. Very special group this year but those groups don't happen every year. Will be interesting. I hope they don't go just so we can start beating up on them!!

If I was NDSU I would make the move as well. They defeat their FBS opponents about half the time they play. They would probably finish at or near the top of the MAC if they played in that conference. They can do as they choose.
