The Yotes probably should have beaten Utah Valley in the opener but that was indeed the opener so they were not running on full cylinders as of yet. Stanford should have been a loss and Sam Houston State was going to be a difficult game to win as they are a good team. What the team should be focusing on is getting ready for the Summit League season. That will be the part of the schedule that I will use to judge how Craig Smith's first year is going.

I'm sorry. Let me try again: We lost. I don't entirely disagree with your assessment, just your choice of words.

54-34 Wofford so far about halfway through the 2nd half. It's definately turning out to not be a very good day to be a Coyote. I was hoping the basketball team would make a better showing in this game. Wofford is good but I don't know that they are 20 points better.

Or is that not worth coming on here to spew negativity about?

This isn't the kind of start that we wanted from Craig Smith but there is plenty of time for a turnaround. Now if Smith had 3 years with no improvement that would be an issue but right now it's too early to get down on the team.

Happened to be traveling, and was able to see the Yotes live in Bridgeport, CT last night.
There was a pretty decent showing of Coyotes fans, more I'm sure than any other traveling team. For all the complaints about attendance in Vermillion, I'm sure if the Yotes host a similar event in years to come, we would outdraw this one (based upon the eye test, I didn't look at recorded attendance).
Wofford is a top 30 mid-major team, and #2 is a Player! I doubt we'll see a better shooting guard this year. Except for the circus, I don't think I've heard a crowd in unison gasp in awe after he hit that fade away bomb to close the half, you could say that was the game-winner.
As for the Yotes, a lot of positives and hope for the future. They play 40 minutes, there was no let up, even when they were down 20+. Everybody plays, and it looks like Coach Smith is getting the 'buy in' he was asking for. Close enough to hear coaches coaching, and let's just say I was impressed with all of the staff. I can see young players being coached up and I would like to think you're going to see improved play from Sparks, Davis and others as the year progresses. We'll give the Summit League teams a good run for the money. OK let the 'moral victories' attacks begin 3,2,1...........

It sounds like this team and coaching staff is doing something that wasn't done last year...adjusting at halftime and actually coaching.

Based on what I have seen, Thoseby shouldn't touch the court until he learns to play team basketball. What do you expect exactly from a guy that's proved he can play, yet for no reason at all finds himself glued to the bench. If you came on for 6 seconds, would you really want to play team basketball?

im not sure why your are so bent out of shape over thoesby? Evidently you didnt watch a single game last year? For every good play/decision he makes, he turns around and makes 2 bad ones. he tries to create his own shot but fails to realize when its not going to work which usually ends up in a turnover. Every once and a great while he gets bailed out by the refs. IF he would play under control and prove that his decision making has improved then i would agree that he at least deserves some minutes, but until he does that he will continue to ride the pine. Playing time on the court during games is not the only way to prove that you have improved either. Coaches evaluate practice more than anything because if you cant bring it in practice, how are they supposed to trust you in a game? His FG % last year was 39.2% (8th on the team) and his 3pt % was 30.1% (6th on the team) and he had an assist to turnover ratio of .54 to 1. So by the numbers he doesnt jump off the page and wow you. From what i have seen, you are either going to do it Smiths way or he will find someone who will. The first person i thought would fade away was Norris but it appears that he has bought into the system as well. In the end, its the players choice to either buy in and make it happen, or to purposely ignore the situation and fade away.

Sounds like we are getting just hosed by the refs today. Commentator has been quite critical of them.

Wow! 11-0 run by the Yotes to tie the game at 68 with 34 seconds left.
