Last Thursday I purchased the Coyotevision feature from the USD website and found out the feed is not very good. In fact it's really bad. Of the 4 games I've watched not one as been a full game from it cutting in and out and getting choppy. It's great that we have one dont get me wrong. But then I started questioning how Utah Valley and Portland State's feeds were SO good.
Anyone with tech knowledge (I have none) able to educate me on why our feed is so bad and what it would take to match the above mentioned schools that have free feeds? I do not mind as I looked at it as a donation to the sports programs but I do not see why anyone else would want to continue to buy that service. I know I'm not going to until it would be better. I'm just glad I did not get the season pass right away.

I know Utah Valley uses the You Tube live broadcast feature. I watched the Utah Valley game and the picture qualify was excellent. You Tube live is also the platform the NBADL uses to broadcast its' games of which I have watched several Skyforce games and all have had excellent picture quality.

I also purchased the video feed and agree that the picture is bad. I live 400 miles away and can't attend many games live. I called the athletic dept last yr and they said they were working on it. It needs to be dramatically improved to get anywhere close to a D1 level broadcast. Hopefully those of you who attend live events can talk to Herbster and President Abbot. Face to face discussion is always the most effective.

I believe changes are coming next year. Right now it's not even comparable to other schools, especially considering a lot of schools provide it for free. It costs a little more than you think to run a quality production. New cameras, video switcher, replay system, audio board, etc. Can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $50,000, depending on what you want to accomplish. As someone who has worked with CoyoteVision for the last 2 years, the equipment is the problem right now. I'd suggest talking with Herbster or Williams if you want to discuss it. Since the Summit League and MVFC don't have digital networks, it leaves a few options open in terms of streaming.

It's nice to hear some changes should be coming next year. After researching it a little more it sounds like a lot of the issues may be browser related and how we send the feed out.
If it was pumped through YouTube live would that make the feed better? If its not full HD I do not mind as long as its not choppy and cutting in and out. I'm sure it would have to be a free feed through YouTube live but at least it would be a good feed and get us a lot more exposure. Maybe all of the issues are front end equiptment only I do not know.
It just seems weird that a school like Portland State could make it that good with a free feed. Their gym was smaller than the one I played high shcool bbal in so I would imagine their budget for something like that is the same if not smaller than ours.

Long story short, the equipment used for the webcast is the same equipment used for the in-game production, which means old 15-20 year old standard-definition cameras. The reason that so many schools have nice broadcasts is because they're probably playing in new(er) facilities that have high definition capabilities, so they need high definition equipment. At this point, since everything at the dome is in standard def, it would make more sense to wait until the arena is finished since they could buy all new equipment then, as opposed to buying "new" equipment now that will be outdated in 2 years.
