This is a good decision. As you stated coyotecrazie5, if you don't like it, don't live there. I highly doubt the University will be forcing any students into this housing that are opposed to it. They know the issues. The fear-mongers out there need to chill out. I suspect the people up in arms about this are the same people that want guns on campus. It is especially fun to see the head big-mouths on these topics be folks that didn't go to college.

I would bet a large chunk of those opposed aren't in Vermillion anyways. USD is a very open minded place (note Charles being perfectly accepted on the dance team, never seen a male do that anywhere else), I'm glad that this group of people will be recognized in housing arrangements. Gender isn't as concrete as male or female. In 2015 this needs to be recognized.
If I were to hold any opposition to this it would be that a whole section of housing will be chalked up to "other". Does it make sense to put gender neutral on the list of options when within that are so many sub-classifications? Do you room biological men who identify as women in the same hall as biological women who identify as men? Are there enough individuals to fill up this housing allotment? I'll be curious to see how this gets organized.

Another reason I am extremely proud to be a YOTE. USD has always done a great job being the first in ND/SD to do these types of things.
It's funny because last weekend at the SDSU game 2 of my friends that graduated from state were the only 2 people all year that I have heard make fun of that situation.
It will be a work in progress to make it work but I am glad the kids from the midwest have that option in a university now in ND/SD.

It's funny because last weekend at the SDSU game 2 of my friends that graduated from state were the only 2 people all year that I have heard make fun of that situation. I was in a conversation today with three USD alums, all of whom were unbelievably critical of the announcement. Two used the word "embarrassed". They weren't trying to make jokes: they were ticked off. I was surprised by the reaction (but, perhaps shouldn't be given the condition of political discourse in this state). Friend of mine attended Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, back in the mid-70s. He claimed they had dorms that permitted guys and girls to share rooms back then. (I was never too sure he was telling us a straight story but it was a source of interesting conversation among 18-19 year old guys.)

I can see where people would be in favor of this and I can also see where people would be against this. I'm not going to judge either side and label one as "progressive" or the other as "close minded". I'm sure both sides have their reasons for feeling the way they do. Personally, I really don't care as it doesn't affect me. Read the Volante article when the paper came out and I gave it a big "meh".
