Sells was quoted as saying that SDSU will be going to the Regents this fall with a proposal for a $30-40,000,000 renovation of Frost Arena. The timeline would be for construction over 2 years starting a year from now ideally. Donors are apparently lined up and ready to go. This is a few years sooner than most of us thought possible. All the improvements at USD and SDSU are great for South Dakota and The Summit/Missouri Valley

I have never been to a game at the Frost, but ended up there a couple times during the offseason while working for Dak. Everything seemed slightly retro, as is expected, but nothing that seemed like it would hinder gameday experience. I remember the video board control room being a bit odd. Like a re-purposed closet that was far from the view of the court and also controlled the board at the football field (it's been a couple years, I might be remembering things wrong). Are these renovations set to have a large behind-the-scenes focus? Is it just a response to the actions of a couple rivals?

Not sure when that plan was originally put together but it was updated in 2008. www.gojacks.com/downloads2/390498.pdf?ATCLID=205012208&DB_LANG=C

AD Sells made the comments in response to questions at a class where he was invited to make a presentation. Being MANY years beyond college age, I wasn't there so can not give you many details. A renovation has been under discussion for several years but was given lower priority than an indoor practice facility, now completed, and a new football stadium now under construction. Over the years there has been discussion on making all seats chair back in a bowl arrangement, a new practice court that might also serve as home to volleyball, suites, improved concessions, etc. I don't which or if all are currently in the plan. So it is just a part of long term planning that began when SDSU moved to DI and not in response to what is being done at NDSU or anyone else we play

You would think for 30 to 40 million why renovate and instead just build a new arena for a few more bucks.

You would think for 30 to 40 million why renovate and instead just build a new arena for a few more bucks. The 'few more bucks' wouldn't be chump change. We're in the middle of $100 million in athletic-facility improvements right now with the majority of that money being donated. And, there's also the fact that Frost has a lot of life left and is a venue that's considered special by SDSU fans. Updating Frost and adding a practice facility makes good sense.

For that kind of money what are they going to do completely gut the inside of Frost Arena and start over. I don't know why they would need to invest that kind of money into the facility. 10-15 mil would make more sense but maybe that just doesn't go very far these days.

I am going to have to say this would be money well spent. The building isn't falling apart or anything, a new facility just isn't needed. A total facelift would allow them to keep up with what the Yotes and Bison are doing with their basketball facilities. We've all seen the concepts for our new arena with fancy lockerooms, luxury boxes, and recruiting rooms. I doubt what currently exists for SDSU matches up to this and they are going to do whatever they can to ensure they don't fall behind on this one.

I'm glad that they have elected to move forward with renovation plans for Frost. I'm sure it will look nice when it's done, but it still won't carry the same weight as a new arena. But overall, it's great the two schools are doing what it takes to compete at a higher level. Competing on equal footing will once again create a lot of interest when the two schools play each other.
