Kent State has already begun its search for a new head coach following the resignation of head coach Doug Martin.
While no specific names have yet been connected to the job opening, some hints have been made known as to what kind of candidate the school might be looking for.
For starters, the Golden Flashes will likely need a coach that will come cheap. Martin had an annual salary of $190,000 per year, which was the lowest of any FBS coach in the country. To make the salary competitive with other coaches in the MAC, Kent State will likely need to offer a new coach something in the $300,000 range. This salary figure could potentially rule out some of the bigger-name possibilities, say former USF coach Jim Leavitt or former Kansas coach Mark Mangino, both of whom may be looking to get back into coaching at a lower level of competition after their controversial departures last season.
Athletic director Joel Nielsen said that the new hire could come from any level of college football, and wouldn't necessarily have to be a coach with previous head coaching experience. Also required of the Golden Flashes new hire, according to Nielsen: "They have to understand they will be walking into a heck of a challenge."
Would Joel Nielson consider Ed for the Kent State job?

That's a very good question. I know I wondered when Joel got the job because the football team was awful, so I figured the coach would get canned quickly.
It will be interesting to see if he does, and with those comments, I bet he would, depending on who applies of course, but I think he would have a shot.

Sounds like a Win-win-win.
1)Nielson gets his man for a good price. 2)Ed moves on up.
3)Saylor gets to put his stamp on the program and let it cook for a year before we take our seat at the MVFC table.
4) insert coyotefans "it never hurts to dream" post here.
I kinda like the scenario.

If you are the brand new AD at a lower level FBS school would you make your first hire at the school, in its signature program, a coach from a transitional FCS school who had a losing record last season?
I don't see Ed getting that job.

I don't see Ed getting that job. Agree totally. I would expect if Neilsen is looking to fill the job with a lower division coach - he will go with someone with a very successfull program and I would expect they would also have relationships in their University's recruiting footprint as well. Chuck Martin from GVSU would have been a great choice, but he just moved on to ND as their receivers coach. If he goes outside their recruiting footprint Mel Tjeerdsma from NW Missouri St is a great coach. He went hard for the UTSA job when they started their program and lost out to Larry Coker (so he obviously would move for the right job.)

My personal opinion is that Joel doesn't really care all that much about Ed, and vice versa. When Eds named surfaced at Montana State, I thought it would be wise that we protect ourselves and get Ed recommittd here. Joel didn't care one way or another. He told me there are alot of good coaches out there.
Ed won't even get an interview.
The coach at NWMS is too old.
That coach will come from an ACC school is my bet. In some ways, Joel is still at Wake

Would Glen Caruso get an interview?

Valid question, and I would say I maybe. Even though I think it will come from the FCS ranks, I think Caruso could have a shot considering how low profile a job it is.
