Just finished reading the most edition of Atlantic magazine entitled "Better watch What You Say - How the new political correctness is ruining education".
Interesting article about how a new strain of PC is damaging higher education and may ultimately be adversely affecting students' mental health. Subtitled "The Coddling of the American Mind" the article yields insight into today's academic environment detailing why, in the name of emotional well-being, college students are increasingly demanding protection from words and ideas they don't like and seeking punishment of those who give even accidental offense.
Perhaps a must read for those who currently have daughters and sons in college?
At the very least the article provides some insight into what college administrators, professors and yes, coaches face as they attempt to prepare students for the future.
I'd be interested in any comments/reactions even if you haven't read it.
Better watch what you write !! (just kidding)

Excellent article, thanks for posting. A promising sign that intelligent discussion about and push-back against the "PC movement" is gaining traction. The author(s) stated focus on the question, "Does it benefit the people it is supposed to help?" is a question that could and should be applied to a number of social issues and their attempted solutions.

Read the article yesterday. We are not doing these kids any favors by coddling them because the real world is a cruel, harsh place. It really is survival of the fittest out here in the business world and it is only going to get tougher. I graduated and entered the work force when the good times were rolling in the 90's, these students today, with the way the economy has been scuffling for years and now signs of economic uncertainty in the stock market these past few days, well they better get ready for a tough ride. Personally, I have a teenage son who I am trying my best to raise as a hard@ss that will do what needs to be done. Probably not PC, don't care, I want him to have a successful life.
Relating this to a sports message board (because that is why we are all here), upon reading that article, and having a moment to reflect, it confirmed for me that if you want your child to learn certain values about hard work, teamwork, winning & losing, and how to be successful, the best avenue to do that is athletics. Kids are not being taught these things in the day to day world of academia. They are being taught to be soft and about "trigger" words. I really don't see how some of these kids are going to make it out here in the world.
