We've got a new football coach, the reigning MVFC Coach of the Year as a matter of fact. Amy Williams, Summit League Coach of the Year. Craig Smith, in only his second year and is a well regarded hire. A new arena opening next season. Plans in the works for a Dome renovation. New track complex, one of the best in the region. New soccer complex. FCOA. A dominant track & field program. I'd say the Athletic Department is doing something to elevate our athletic programs. Maybe you could do something too like joining the Howling Pack or buying season tickets? Agreed the commitment is there from the athletics program. I wish some things like the Dome renovation would be a little more transparent to help drive interest.
The biggest problem with our fan base is they could give a shit less during the game. The only time they do anything is to clap during the school song. There also seems to be this idea that its uncool to go to these games and follow USD. especially with people in their 20's and 30's.
I do feel like state has done a better job attracting and respecting younger fans. At USD we still spoil the top 1% and give little to no thought or respect to the other 99% which has hurt increasing the fan base. When you have to give a minimum of $1,050 to get a tailgating spot and be within the same zip code of the Dome we are pricing most of our fan base out of getting involved.
I agree with the 1% thing, but I think it is broader than just $$ & tailgate. The in-game experience has tilted waaaaay to far to being geared towards alumni that are 55+ years old. Music is 80's tunes played at a 'respectable level', in-game promotions are boring, and half time entertainment is the same thing you could have seen 20 years ago. I am one of the 'old alumni', and even I think the music should be loud, current, and fun for the students - not the alumni. I've sat through games with kids ages 5 through 19 and they are bored to tears - the only way they are fun is if you are older or a purist (ie - no distractions, the game speaks for itself) - regardless of who we are playing or if we are winning. Bring back the loud music, Sandstorm, and hip-hop. Yes, the gray hair who write big checks will cringe, but when the students get engaged, everything changes. And they stay fans after they graduate.

I'm pretty sure Sandstorm is still played at ear popping levels for kick-offs. Funny, as I sit here and reminisce about Coyote football games, the sights and sounds that come to mind are of the band, not piped in music, the roar of a Harley, and Sanstorm played at ear popping levels . Maybe the game day experience is geared towards older fans because those are the ones who religiously show up and support the teams. As for tailgaiting, the West lot is free, I say it gets turned into a tailgating blowout zone next year and is made the place to be for the "true Game Day experience".

We tailgate in the West Lot and have a blast. Kind of by accident during one of the early games, we set up by some of the players' parents and ended up tailgating with them the whole season. Had a great time! I don't want the admin getting any fancy ideas and deciding they should be charging us to tailgate there. Tailgate nation is way out of our price league. I'm a school teacher and couldn't begin to afford what they want for a spot over there. We always walked through TN before games and it always seemed very structured and controlled. The West lot is a free-for-all mix of Yote fans and opposing team fans. The parents of the players we tailgate with were in TN, but couldn't afford to stay over there after the cost hike. Seemed as though the West Lot got better with every game. Would be great if the players and the band showed us some love by walking through the West lot as well... Oh well... guess you gotta pony up the $$$ for those bennies. Will be awesome when the Dome renovations are done and the new doors are installed on the west side so we don't have to walk all the way around anymore. Do you think they'll move TN out onto the old soccer fields now that they have the new soccer stadium?

No offense, Yote 53, but that is exactly what I'm talking about. If we make it pleasant for older fan bases, we get older fan bases - which makes sense, if that is what we want. Harley's aren't cool to college kids, the band isn't going to be confused for Wisconsin's all-brass band, and Sandstorm is only played for a very short snippet (Journey gets more air time during a game). BB is decidedly even more dull than FB, although I'm expecting that to change because of the arena, even if game-day stays the same. The students will bring energy that will bring others. However, to fully contradict myself, it always seems to me that the average age of rabbits fans at SLT is around 70, FWIW. So, what do I know...

Tough to say what the plan is but I would imagine some space is freed up to the North now.

And what comes first, the chicken or the egg? Do we cater the gameday experience for students who aren't even there or don't bother staying? Or do you cater it to your loyal fanbase? You also have to consider how many young kids attend these games. There is a lot of families and a family friendly environment needs to be maintained. Are the students there to listen to some snippets of Lil Wayne & Drake or are they there to watch a football/basketball game and cheer on their school? Frankly, the atmosphere can't be artificially created FOR the students, the atmosphere need to be organically created BY the students.

Two more NCAA tourney appearances this year. Sure they had a head start in D1 but this is seriously a one sided rivalry when it comes to meaningful accomplishments. The Coyotes can't even upstage SDSU (Women's hoops) even when they are the better team which is not very often. The Women win two conference titles in a row and the Jacks are the ones smiling in the end for two straight years. Conference titles are nice and are a good accomplishment but the overall feeling is that the Jacks still ended up having the better year because they are dancing and USD is not. Their men play like garbage for most of the Summit tourney and still get to the NCAA tourney. We are supposed to be bringing in all these recruits in mens basketball but look at all the freshman players in the Summit and not one Coyote is mentioned as a promising new comer. Now the Jacks have Daum and he will probably be killing the Yotes for 3 more years. How many playoff games have they had in football vs a big goose egg for the Coyotes. How many NCAA appearances do their Women have. Isn't it something like 7 bids in 8 years. Now the Jacks men have 3 NCAA bids against another big goose egg So adding it all up the Jacks lead in significant accomplishments about 15-20 to 1. This athletic administration needs to look at this and feel the pain of this punch to the gut and actually do something about it. I am tired of the excuses and tired of losing to them in almost anything that matters. It's always next year or three years from now for USD but the future never becomes the present. Of course everyone will tell me to be patient, the same thing I have been told every year for the last 5 years. I will be told that same thing for the next 5 years in a row as well. When will this one sided rivalry ever truly change? That is a question I would certainly like to know. OR, you could say they have just as many NCAA wins as the Yotes for MBB and 1 more for WBB, even after a 5 year head start...

So after the women's game on Saturday, my mom went to the ticket booth to check what they had for tickets for next year. (In case some didn't notice, they bumped the USD section out further yet from mid court from what it was last year. They took away the 2 or 3 rows of folding chairs on each side of the court. I think those tickets are for tournament sponsors. They all got moved back into the first few rows of permanent seats.) So the woman shows my mom the available seats for next year. The only available in lower bowl was on the ends. She said most of the tickets in the lower bowl were sold last year for 2 years. So I did some checking on the bunny board and I guess back in September they had a thing where if you bought a summit league baseball tournament ticket, you could get a code or something and a couple days later they could buy summit league basketball tournament tickets for like 2 days. As long as they had the code, they could order the tickets for a couple days but it was for a 2 year commitment. They had people sending a PM to others with the passcode. Funny, when USD tried that this year for the SDSU football game at home, we were too stupid to keep it a secret from sdsu fans or a usd fan told some buddies from sdsu. Perhaps you might try getting to know an SDSU alumnus/alumna? We had access to the two year deal in a group with 4 SDSU grads, a USD grad and a UNO grad. Excellent seats and a good group to hang with. No thanks. Maybe they should just be offered to everyone at the same time in the first place.

I will agree with you on some things. Many of our fans don't stand and clap for the school song unless the game is going in our favor. Look at the men's game at the tournament. When we were getting beat in the second half, hardly any fans stood up and clapped for the school song. Many of them just sit there all the time. I think USD is in trouble fan wise coming up in the near future. There are very few in 20's and 30's. What's the answer? It's interesting you bring up the spoiling the 1%. My parents have had season tickets for football and basketball for like 43 years and now in the last few years, they have changed all the point systems and whatnot and suddenly those 43 years aren't real important for whatever reason. It was interesting seeing a lot of the people sitting in front of us that you never see at games until SLT comes around.

It's much better than it used to be. Plus they probably can't play the music any louder because the PA system in the dome is terrible. With the kids being "bored to tears" seriously? That's because kids these days can't just sit and watch any kind of sporting event because it's "boring" to them. I'm not saying your kids or whoever, but that's just how they feel. That's why there are no students at games. It's too boring. I don't know what more the school can do for them. They have given away free tuition, big screen tvs. Do you have to give them free beer? I have heard guys in their 60's and 70's say they don't go to games anymore because it's too much advertising and too much like a business. I told them, how do you expect colleges to make it without all the sponsorships and advertising? They didn't have an answer.

Yes, it is safe to say that the only reason a family of 5 would spend the time and money on going to games is to be entertained. Falling attendance - especially in the under-30 demographic - is a problem nationwide, regardless of size of school or win/loss records. (Stu Mandel has written about this trend a few times) We go to Gopher games too, and the in-game experience is wildly different based on the game-day entertainment script uses videos, contests, the band, and other things to feel like the game is constantly moving, even though the Gophers may be getting hammered and it is a 4 minute TV time out. The experience can be made to appeal to certain demographics. My college-age family (USD freshman) attended 0 FB games, 0 WBB and 1 MBB game, and they went to/played sports in HS. Something is up.

Probably some relationship to electronic devices. I don't tweet, etc maybe need to link prizes, contests etc somehow to electronics for those in attendance. I don't even know if that is possible since I was born BC (before computers).

It's not just a USD thing either, every school is having issues with student turnout, even mighty Bama. I feel kind of sorry for the kids these days, they don't know what they are missing. Myself and my friends will still show up, party, and have a good time.
I think the issue lies right there. When I grew up you went to high school, played sports, partied a bit, went to college, partied a bit more. Life was fun. Now my oldest is entering high school and they're talking to us about career tracks and how competitive it is to get into a good school. It's all b.s. and just too much pressure. If you want to go to college you can. All that matters is you get your degree. After that it's all about personality, work ethic, and being entrepreneurial. Street smart if you will. Some of the more successful guys I know were clowns in college. Guys who liked to party. I just like to say they we're getting an advanced degree in social skills and it has paid off handsomely later in life.
Long rant but the point is, lighten up, have a little fun, drink a few beers, and enjoy the game.
