I think we are seeing a different identity for this team than we did under Coach Williams. Obviously both coaching philosophy and the skills of the available players will play into this.
I have gone to one game and watched a few online, and my impression was that this team puts forth a lot of effort on defense, but was having to "find their way" on offense. Although it is frustrating at times to see them look dominant for stretches, and then have lapses of poor shooting or a porous defense, a young team should be expected to have a little inconsistency. Hopefully the consistency will improve through the season.
Looking at their stats so far this season, we are only ranked in the top 50 in 6 statistical areas, and they are ALL shooting:
#14 Free throw percentage (79.2%) #25 Field goal percentage (47.2%) #44 3-point percentage (36.7%)
#11 3-pointers made (61) #21 3-point attempts (166) #24 3-pointers per game (8.7)
I guess that's our identity so far. A good starting point, I think.

update:
#6 Free throw percentage (80.5%)!! #31 Field goal percentage (45.8%) #44 3-point percentage (36.8%)
#15 3-pointers made (89) #22 3-point attempts (242) #20 3-pointers per game (8.9)
looks like we should be trying to draw lots of fouls....

Unfortunately we are not the only sharp-shooting team in the Summit.
Denver, Omaha and IUPUI all have a higher 3-point percent than us.
Western Ill and Fort Wayne are both in the top-50 for free-throws.
Western Illinois is #8 in scoring offense, #8 in assists-per game, and #8 in steals-per-game! (fast-paced ball hawking team)
SDSU is in the top-50 in two categories I could find: Fewest Personal Fouls/Game and fewest turnovers/game. (ball control, discipline)

I never saw any problems with the free throw shooting but I never realized just how good they are. 80.5 percent is outstanding. The offensive production in some areas is nice. Just let Allison Arens drive to the basket and either take the lay up or pop it out to Bradley for the three. It seems like she barely misses from out there when she is relatively open. I think Bradley is making a case for co MVP on the team. Whatever offensive numbers those other Summit teams are putting up I will give them that as long as the Coyotes are the best team in the league on the defensive end of the court.

Yeah, I couldn't find any top-50 defensive stats for any summit teams (other than steals). Would be interesting to see which teams are the best defensively. I'm going to guess Oral Roberts and State show up well.

Woof. We'd better tighten the 3-PT defense up a little in this league. Lots of good shooters.

That is definitely gonna change some of these stats. Unless, of course, those numbers accidently get attributed to the Yotes... ESPN struggled with knowing the difference last night...

I'm guessing the game fell apart once ESPN fixed the scoreboard?

Yup, I'm pretty sure the NCAA site only updates their stats on Mondays. We'll have to see how they look in a few days...

I think sharing the basketball has to be a part of this. I would like to know where the Coyotes rank in assists per game. The Yotes take good shots and they earn those good shots.

I think that the way Western Illinois is getting so many scoring opportunities is the same way Northern Illinois (our opponent tonight) is doing it. Lots of forced turnovers and steals, followed by fast break opportunities.
By contrast I think we are "passing open" the shooters with ball movement. Our high shooting % may be a result of this style of offense, too. I'm not a BB strategy guy, but maybe someone who is can comment on this.
I have heard that we run a type of "motion offense" with lots of screens and no set pattern. Whatever it is is allowing AA to find holes and slash through to the basket A LOT.
