I want to get this discussion going early because I think this is a very important game and one that will set the standard and trend possibly for the rest of the year. This is the start of the part of the schedule that has been in the works for well over a year. Craig Smith's player personnel decisions were aimed at this year for quite some time. I am not saying Smith punted last year but he had the football lined up ready to make contact with his foot. His decisions were aimed at being good this year and especially for the Summit League because some of the new faces needed their seasoning and now they have that.
Last year was an absolute gut wrencher against the Mavs. The Coyotes had a 21 point lead at the Dakota dome with only 14:00 left in the game and could not hold on. At that 14:00 mark if odds were placed on the game I imagine that the Coyotes had over a 99% chance to win at that point in time. There should be plenty of motivation for many reasons. For one as a revenge game for last year, two because Omaha is a traditional rival, three because it's the first game of the conference season and four because the game is at home and the team and fans should be a little extra charged up.
It's time to raise the bar. It's time for the Coyotes to start playing a more complete game. In basketball it's almost impossible to play great for all 40 minutes but the Yotes need fewer substandard minutes in the game over all. The home schedule has been pretty weak so far and now becomes the first real test in the SCSC for men's basketball. Omaha will pressure the Coyotes all over the court and will definitely challenge the defense. The Coyotes need to play the kind of defense that they have shown in decent spurts throughout the non conference season. The offense with some discipline and ball movement should be able to score good points on the Mavericks defense.
