Predicting a victory for the Yotes. Home court advantage plays huge and the crowd gets into it early to help take down the bizun.

We're currently favored by 1.5 to 2, which is a little surprising without Flack. Hoping the crowd (especially the students) show up for this one.

I think the Coyotes should be favored in this game as they are playing in an arena where a home basketball team has never lost. NDSU went through kind of a dead spot in their non conference season where they weren't playing very well at all. There only road game was at Frost where the Jacks played horrible against them. I believe the Bison are a good team but they really have to play well together and be well composed to win many of their games. Luckily for them they are that way often. I think the Coyote guards will smoke them and drive by them time and time again and out hustle them as well. If the Coyotes go small ball against them I think player for player the Coyotes are just better. I believe this is a battle of the best two defensive teams in the conference. This will be my "more comfortable win then many will expect" pick. Going 76-62 for the Coyotes. Against IUPUI I thought for the first three-fourths of the game that the Coyotes played better than the results on the score board suggested.

It's a small sample size, but in the handful of Bison games I've watched, they really seem to be more of a 2nd half team. They tend to look pretty flat throughout the first half and then make a run starting around the 15-13 minute mark in the 2nd half. Again, only watched 3-4 games, but it seems to be the trend I've noticed. Hope the Yotes come out of halftime focused, particularly if they go into halftime with any sort of decent lead.

Yotes need to keep contain of Paul Miller. The guy has never seen a shot he doesn't like. He can get hot and that makes it very tough to win. Werner is an old school pounder who straight out hustles a lot of more athletic players. I like his game. This is a winnable game, just need to try and contain NDSU from getting offensive rebounds and stay out of foul trouble.

*Hot take coming* Big game tonight, and (as a current student) not even an e-mail to us about the game tonight. I think the Marketing Department may be partly to blame for not creating a 'buzz' to the student body. One of my classmates (who is a former athlete here and loves USD) didn't even realize there was a game the day of the SCSC home opener.
Oh, we did get an e-mail from the Dean of Students on Monday. A boring "-Wednesday, January 11th Coyote Men vs. NDSU (7pm) The first 400 students will get “We are South Dakota” t-shirts. The first 100 students will get a coupon for a free dome dog" e-mail (then the e-mail tells us about Saturday's game as well).
Hopefully I am wrong and the students show up tonight, but if they don't, we need to look at why and start with the Marketing Department.
With that said, going for a close USD win tonight. Somewhere around 78-75 range.

Do a simple poll of students about what strategies would work, or something.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure athletics and the university have separate marketing departments

Also a current (graduate) student, can confirm there was an incredibly boring email sent out on Monday morning. 82 words to cover both games this week. No images, enthusiasm, or reason to get excited if you're a recipient. The word 'free' shows up four times though.
Play on the rivalry game. Put some graphics in there. Mention the team is fresh off a couple exciting wins. Give the implications of the games, win both and we are in the driver's seat in the Summit. I haven't been on the main campus in a month but I'm guessing there is little in the MUC to generate excitement.

Aren't students on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? I am in my mid-30's and have already seen several announcements.
I don't mean to be so dismissive, but how much hand holding needs to be done?
I would bet there are folks on here far older than me that had to read a bulletin board in their day or - gasp - read a schedule and enter it into a day planner.
Point being, if an email is what it takes, I will bring it up to the athletic staff today, but I have serious doubts that is the answer.
Now, if their isn't any notice up in the MUC or other campus buildings, that is disappointing to me.

No you're right, CE. I am on Twitter, Facebook, etc. as well. But as Yotes points out, there needs to be a reason for the fans to 'want to' go. I am a graduate student as well, and as such, I spend most of my time in my building, but when I go to the MUC, I do not see a whole lot going on. I feel there needs to be as much hand holding as possible, marketing needs to be geared toward the casual fan. I would suggest most of us here are more than the casual fan (because we're here discussing this on a message board). We do not need to be swayed into getting into the arena, we just will go because we love our Coyote athletics (we're the school's market for donating/Howling Pack/etc.) Getting more casual fans into the games eventually creates more serious fans, which in turn, results in more donations. So yeah, hammer hard as to why students 'have a duty' to go to the game, hold both their hands if it gets the job done

I forwarded the link to this discussion to Joe Thuente, director of Athletic Marketing. As with everyone else I have dealt with in the Athletic Dept, he responded very timely and said I was free to share his reply, which is as follows:
Thank you for sharing. For those interested in our strategy I will share my thoughts just so there is an understanding of where we are coming from and why we do things. I believe in transparency, and I’d like to explain to Coyote fans and students why we do things the way we do. Feel free to share.
The email from the Dean was written by my department through the Dean’s office (the one being referred to in the posts). It was intentionally short so as to get the message across. Our research (including USD student focus groups and surveys, and national research) shows that the longer an e-mail is, the less likely it is to be read (especially from students who are not particularly engaged in athletics). We keep our messaging in those emails short and to the point. A long drawn-out e-mail about the meaningfulness of the game and the rivalry would (according to the research) be less effective in getting the message across because it would be read by fewer students (and the ones who did read it would likely be the ones coming anyway). Think about the amount of email you likely just delete without reading, or only give a quick glance. We do not want to be in that group.
A longer email is sent from my email address to students who have been to multiple sport events this year. It is more of a newsletter format as those students have shown an affinity for athletics and are more likely to read a longer e-mail. The ones from the Dean’s office goes to all students.
In general, e-mail is only a moderately effective way to reach students, especially those whose interest is middling. We’ve promoted the game via Facebook, Twitter and Snapchat, specifically highlighting the student promotions for tonight (a free t-shirt to the first 400 fans and free dome dogs to the first 100). In addition, a video should be running at the MUC this afternoon on the big wall promoting these events as well. The promotion is also currently on the header to our website.
In addition, all students that are on-campus should have received a schedule poster in their dorms when they returned from winter break (and should have had a fall poster when they first arrived). The housing department steps up for us and distributes these posters (which specifically make for this purpose) when students are gone.
If fans and students have ideas on the best ways to reach students, we would love to hear them. I particularly enjoy hearing the students’ perspectives on this. Young people are a hard-to-reach bunch these days, as their attention is split between many different communication forms, and those forms are constantly changing. If there is an avenue that we could use and are not pursuing please let me know. Trust me, I want them there as badly (or worse than) anyone else.
Thanks, and Go Yotes!
Joe
Every time I have any contact with members of the Athletic Dept, coaches, administration, support staff, etc., I know that the Athletic Dept is in good hands.
