One of two things is happening in this situation:
1) I really, really am not anywhere near as good at assessing talent as I would have given myself credit for before starting to follow this Trey Dickerson transfer situation. (Very possible and/or likely...there are many things I'm not as good at as I'd like to think I am.)
OR
2) Trey Dickerson was severely under-utilized during his time at USD.
Is there some reason so many high-major D1s have taken such a strong interest in Dickerson when most USD fans didn't exactly seem crushed and heartbroken when his departure was announced? I mean, I understand that Iowa wanted him coming out of Williston State and everything, so I get that the talent/potential/etc. has been there since the beginning. But to repeat what I just said about Khy Kabellis over on the NDSU message board, I never remember watching USD (maybe 3-5 games this year) and thinking, Goodness, Dickerson should be playing at a way higher level than this.
Can someone explain to me what I'm missing or misunderstanding in this situation? And if all of these high majors see this much potential in Dickerson, shouldn't it be a little more of a letdown that he's leaving Vermillion?

I definitely would not say he was underutilized. He struggled mightily shooting the basketball in the first half of the season and played out of control on and off throughout the season. He did shoot it much better and make better decisions all around as the season progressed.
The reason we are not more crushed is that the writing was on the wall for next year. Triston Simpson is the better true pg, especially for the personnel we have next year. He was slated to get 25 mpg at minimum even if dickerson stayed.
It sounds like Dickerson wants to play a larger role than that, thus the reason for transfer. With that being said, I do not see him playing more than 20 mpg at any of the schools mentioned so far. Maybe Depaul or Memphis since Memphis had a mass exodus.

I think a lot of it may be the one year commitment- if it doesn't work out they can just cut bait. Also probably hard to find guys who can come in and give minutes right away (in theory). When he announced the transfer I too thought it would be a lateral move at best but obviously I was wrong in that assessment. Bigger picture, these two transfers along with Thurman could spell very bad news for the talent level in the Summit going forward. Daum, Konchar, and Mooney all likely will be eligible for the grad transfer next season- if the guys transferring this season do end up going high major (I saw on Twitter Thurman was visiting Mizzou and Nebraska) those guys will be able to go just about anywhere they want to. Potentially losing the top four players in the league (along with Paul Miller to graduation) would be a major blow.

Potentially losing the top four players in the league (along with Paul Miller to graduation) would be a major blow. That was actually my next immediate thought. I know everyone says, "Oh, So-And-So is happy here, he'd never leave early, why would he want to be the small fish in a big pond, etc.", but everyone also says that about every coach they love. NDSU fans said it about both Craig Bohl and Saul Phillips, SDSU fans said it about Nagy, and it had already started coming up with USD fans about Craig Smith during the Drake drama ("He's really building something special here, he loves his team, if he waits he'll have better offers, etc."). Everyone convinces themselves that no one would ever want to leave, but whether it's more money or a highly prominent role on a big-time stage, coaches and players both can have different priorities and agendas than the fans who are desperately hoping they'll stay. Not always, as Smith showed in his situation, but definitely often enough that it's not shocking or even unrealistic someone in that position would leave for greener pastures. Ideally, for the Summit League, none of those guys would leave, as it sets an unfortunate precedent for future game-changing, national attention-grabbing players in the Summit League (like Daum). But out of all of these, Thurman definitely is the most alarming. Kabellis and Dickerson were solid, but not necessarily "the stars" of their teams. Thurman, on the other hand, was a stud. When that starts happening, things start to become a little more questionable. If that happens, just don't start poaching our good D2 players to make up for it, please and thank you.

The end of the NDSU game in which Trey was called out by coach Smith for not executing the drawn up play at the buzzer (Trey pulling up from 5 feet behind the arc) might've been the turning point. Off the top of my head I don't remember a game after that where he finished the game on the court. I could be wrong and don't feel like doing the research to back up my statement, but that's my opinion.

If Dickerson catches on with any of these schools he will never be expected to "finish a game." His role will be to inject instant speed to the flow of any game when its needed, probably get 8 to 15 minutes per game. The key word is "role" as in role player. Expectations for Trey were higher than he achieved with the Coyotes, and for sure Simpson exceeded expectations for a true freshman.

Is it maybe as simple as 'If I'm only getting 10 minutes a game, I may as well do it at Memphis (et al)'? Having conversations doesn't equal 30+ minutes a night.

Let's see where he ends up before starting the hot takes.

My thoughts on the point guard situation comes down to who do you prefer: Simpson or Dickerson? In my mind Simpson made others on the court better, while Dickerson didn't. Not saying that Trey was a bad player, in fact, he was very talented, but I think he was interested in getting a few more shots and more minutes than he was getting here and being more of a focus of the offense. All in all, he seemed like a good person and I hope he finds what he's looking for.

I don't understand the interest he is getting. I can understand Dickerson using his one last chance to play somewhere else and expierence some place new on someone else's dime. I can't blame him. Especially if starting is potentially off the table.

Not sure this counts as 'big time'?
