New basketball recruit: Matthew Johns, 6'8 wing out of Australia. Tall for a wing and a 45.8% three point shooter to boot. Don't know what year he'll be. goyotes.com states he is a freshman.

Wow! Nice get for the Coyotes. This is what happens when I don't check the board for a day, I'm late for the good news.
I assume this is the culmination of The Toddfather's strategy of bringing in the Aussie coach. Lee has deep connections down under, so I think we can assume this guy is a good get with big potential. Plus, he is a 4-for-5 guy! Not bad for late in the recruiting cycle.
We fans may panic at times when we don't get constant updates, but The Toddfather is a cold-blooded shark. Patience pays off.

Here's one of his highlight videos from last September: (He is #12)
He is listed here as a PG, and half of his highlights are assists! I have to think that those kind of skills are valuable at any position, as is the 6'-8" length. Looks like he has a decent wingspan as well. He is a bit skinny, but he is also young and has time to fill out. I'm not a fan of the haircut, but I guess we can't have everything.... LOL. I hear that man-buns (haircut) are cool right now, so who knows?

OOps, had to go back in the thread a bit to get that. Hey, you gotta admit, embedding the video is more FUN, right?

If he is a PG then it looks like we signed a 5'9" PG and a 6'8" PG. Was he getting some other offers, or was it one of those things that other schools didn't really know if he wanted to come to college in the U.S.? How does it work if they have been playing professionally in terms of eligibility? Would he really have all 4 years left?

I have no idea about other offers, but I think the idea with our assistant coach is that he has numerous contacts and Inside information that helps him identify and secure talent from Australia. Just like assistants with Florida or Texas connections. The USD announcement said "wing" so I assume that's where they will play him. The fact that he has played point successfully just makes him more versatile. I wouldn't get too hung up on pidgenholing a player to a position IMO. Did you know that Babe Ruth started out as a pretty successful pitcher in the pro's? He chose to switch to outfield because he wanted to be playing in every inning. It was after that switch that he he started to be known for his hitting. The more you know....

Also, I don't think he has ever been a "professional " player. All of those leagues mentioned in the article are amateur, I believe. You can be on a jr national team as an amateur. Fogg did that over the summer for Canada.

If anybody has the time, here is the film of the NACA Division 1 Championship. Jovic is #32 and starts for Southwest. Hard to find much else on him out there.

Thinking both the bigs we added are strong redshirt candidates?

Does anyone know what Jovic's other offers were? Did he decommit from somewhere else or why was he still unsigned this late in the game?
