Looks like Fischer is gone for ASU. This was on football scoop: Arizona State: Source tells FootballScoop Western Illinois head coach Charlie Fisher has accepted the receivers position at Arizona State. Fisher and OC Rob Likens previously coached together at Temple. Prior to taking over as head coach at WIU for the 2016 season, Fisher served as OC at Richmond two seasons and previously coached at Penn State, Vanderbilt, Miami (OH), Temple and NC State among other places. footballscoop.com/the-scoop/

I watched the press conference introducing Jared Elliot as their new head coach. He's extremely young but very impressive. He certainly said all the right things. My guess is this young man was the favorite amongst the current players and new recruits.
If he can overcome his youth and inexperience, I think he's gonna be a pretty good pick for coach. Expect more of the same when we play them.

Jared Elliott is an interesting hire for WIU. He is a current assistant coach, but he has no head coaching experience. His challenge will be the same challenge Coach Nielson and Coach Fischer had and that is to effectively recruit Chicago and the suburbs. Fischer had little success doing that as his early signing class for this year had only 2 from the greater Chicago area and last year he only had 3 recruits from the greater Chicago area. It will be interesting to see if Coach Elliott and many of the current assistants can make this connection to the talent there? WIU has many challenges, including finances and facilities, I am sure they understand they are not a hot destination for head coaches, so they choose to go within the current staff for a new head coach which makes sense. With the loss of 20 seniors, including LB Brett Taylor, WR Jaelon Acklin, 4 starting O-lineman, 2 starting d-linemen, and 3 starting DBs this is a program on the decline.

Let's be honest. If USD were to have a hiring process and result like this we would all be ready to burn Herbie at the stake for not bringing a quality head coach to Vermillion. Now, this guy might be a great guy and presents himself very well but he has zero head coaching experience and there is nothing to really hang you hat on with this hire other than he is on the current staff and is familiar with WIU. Case in point, Wes B was groomed by Coach Glenn to be the heir apparent at USD and many of you were having none of that.
Something to look for is how much of the staff stays there or if they start bolting. That will tell you how much faith his (former) peers have in his ability to be a head coach. With the amount of players that left WIU last season I am expecting a downward trend there.

As far as I'm concerned, Fisher benefited from Nielson's recruits and then bolted when they ran out. I know the WIU people would vehemently disagree because, according to them, Fisher was such a better coach the Nielson, which I just don't see at all. They've got to realize that until the state of Illinois gets it's act together it's going to be a revolving door there.

All 4 Dakota FCS schools and UNI all offer some degree of FCOA scholarships. USD, SDSU & UNI all recruit Chicago and all of Illinois pretty hard and I am guessing NDSU & UND are also pretty active. Until Western Illinois offers FCOA they will always struggle to win recruiting battles in Chicago and elsewhere.

The state of Illinois is in a real financial pickle ( shocker there, right ? ) so they currently don't have, or won't have, the resources to compete at the same level as the 4 Dakota schools, UNI, and Youngstown. So therefore, they obviously have to do more with less. Hence I believe the reason for the hiring of Ellliott. I get the backlash of not hiring a coach with previous HC duties, but I'll say this in defense of the hire....if you can't afford to pay someone what the rate is for top quality coaches that others in your league are, you have to take a chance.
In my opinion, that's what they did. They are taking a chance with a guy that the current players love. Can he recruit? I don't know. Can he coach? My guess is yes, but obviously will be different wearing the main hat. Is he likeble? Yes. Is he already savvy with the media and locals? I'd say yes. IF you have to take a chance due to resources, I think this was a good hire. Time will tell.

I'm glad they waited until this go around to just give the job to an assistant.

Of course the guy is going to say all the right things. I'd love to hear a press conference sometime introducing a new coach and have him say "I hope to do well enough in this gig so that in a few years I can ride it into a better job."
