I totally would have gotten a move to Colorado State, but Utah State? No way. Third in line at best behind Utah and BYU. Seems like a lateral move, but if that what he wants, then go. There's some truth in what Quarrier said. I like Craig a lot both personally and professionally, but, if this rumor is to be believed, our players and program don't need to be going through this constantly.

Would you rather have a coach who sucks and yet the school is to poor to bring in someone who can actually coach. I would rather lose a coach because they got another job because that means they were successful than looking for a new coach because you've had 4 awful years and you fired the coach I just hope they don't get Macomb and WIU grad Matt Margenthaler.

Can’t blame the guy. Very similar trajectory as Miles imo.

I'm of the mindset that Smith is either using this as leverage again to try to squeeze more money out of Herbie or he REALLY wants out of Vermillion.
His blasting of the team after the CBI game, that they didn't want to play in to begin with, may have hurt his credibility with the players. It's hard on those guys as well to have to go through this emotional roller coaster every year with a coach who seems to constantly be looking elsewhere.

Life of a good mid-major program, this will be most likely a discussion every few years.

He got a 3 year extension and solid raise last year. Herbster would have to get this approved by BoR as well which just doesn't seem likely to me.

This is getting ridiculous to me. I heard Briar Cliff is looking for a new coach. Better interview for that one as well. His true intentions will be known soon enough but I am getting just a little bit confused on all of this. If this all ends up as rumor only than I apologize but this seems like more than just smoke.
USD is an up and coming program so why would he want to go to Utah State. Is he really that desperate to get out of Vermillion. He is really liked here. People may think this is crazy but the Summit Tourney being in Sioux Falls could actually be costing us our coach. I would not blame him at all for thinking that his goals of getting to the tournament have hit a HUGE road block and to get to that goal he needs a more realistic situation to accomplish that. I saw a very frustrated Smith on the side lines in that game in Sioux Falls against SDSU. I actually couldn't blame him because there is a blue and yellow monopoly right now on the tourney. Half the Pac 10 would have lost to the Jacks in that environment.
Colorado State OK
Utah Fricking State - Good luck with that.
I guess the bottom line is that people will do what they want to do.

If you think USD is a final destination job, then you're incredibly naive. Utah State/Mountain West is better in 1. Salary 2. Average attendance 3. NCAA Tournament access. Yes, Colorado State is a better job, but I can about guarantee that if Smith gets USU to the tourney, he gets a Power 5 job. I do not fault Smith one bit if he takes this opportunity. Let's hope we have the same conversation about the next USD hire in a few years. EDIT: I really didn't think Utah State was a good enough program to sway Smith from USD at this point, and most probably don't. But it's a conference that, if you get the talent to your respective program and win, you are certain to get a job at a major program.

Thought I'd join this discussion as in all honesty its sad but its exciting times. Sad because Craig Smith is awesome but exciting because coaches don't take better jobs without success. Even if the next coach we hire is here only one year, i'd be excited because that means success. I'm sure Herbster would agree with that.
1. Have a coach here for 15 years with some ups and downs 2. Consistently have coaches here every 2 years with going to the Dance 50% of the time.
I'll take #2 all day long and this is the state USD basketball is in.

Utah State is a bigger school in a better conference and he could make more money. If they don’t have to fly commercial on road trips then even better. I think he hates all the bus to Omaha/Sf and take a couple connections to get where you are going stuff.
