Well, the Men play Bellevue on Wednesday, (Dec 12) this week. I think that generally speaking throwing an NAIA school on the schedule this late in the season is a lose-lose proposition, and probably represents a failure to fill the schedule.
For the women, who played Bellevue yesterday, it doesn't help us much at all, IMHO. They already have a couple of tune-up games. May as well put another decent D-1 on the schedule. For this year's men's team, I'll say it probably comes at the right time in terms of injuries, depth, and development. They need to get healthy, and need to develop young/inexperienced players desperately.
Massey has us winning 87-55. I honestly don't care how much we win by, as long as we aren't putting any players out there that are less than 100% health, and aren't playing starters for more than a half. Time for the backups to show something.

Might be worth noting that for WBB playing NAIA doesn't hurt RPI, but playing an easy D1 game does. Case in point - Yotes WBB played Bellevue for 1 half and RPI stayed the same. SDSU WBB is playing a tune-up game against D1 Savannah St. (RPI #349), so they will get penalized for the easy W.

This might end up being a very worthwhile game if the younger bench players like Robinson and Johns can get a lot of minutes and gain some experience. Coach Lee mentioned that Harvey was coming along so more floor time would probably be of great benefit to him as well. We're going to need minutes from these guys this season.

I'm not much of A Queen fan so that reference was over my head, but then lots of stuff is over my head anymore,

...and no Armstrong sighting in the first half. 🤔 He must be on the naughty list after the KC game. I realize it's an NAIA game but Kelley looks much improved and is playing with a lot of aggressiveness. Robinson had a great looking drive for a layup and we need more of that.

Not a bad game overall. Don't know if it was their plan going in, but it seemed like Belleview really milked the shot clock because they had a whole lot of possessions where they didn't shoot until the very end. They also hit six of their first seven three point attempts in the second half which at least kept it from being a runaway. Jeck played in several spurts and looked decent; needs to get his game shape sharpened and he could be a big help. Hadn't noticed this before so maybe it's recent, but Robinson had his right wrist and thumb heavily taped which would obviously affect his shot. He's improving every game and I think he'll be a good one before he graduates.

Listened to coaches press conference after the game. Lee pulls no punches which I like. These guys aren't going to question where they stand with him. I think he can really coach just need to hit on recruiting.

From Lee in the Presser:
"You know, I've coached in a lot of these games. You play a non-D-1... (no disrespect to them but) I've never felt good... after one of these games.... You feel like you should (have) played better, even if you win by 30..."
"I thought defensively, you never want to give up that many threes..."
"He's (Hags) our most important offensive player. We've got other guys that can score, but the way he can space the floor... We just don't have, right now, ... somebody we can just throw the ball to and get a basket in the post. Dan's got to get in shape. Jay's got to get better.... We really need Trey to play on the perimeter. It's really unfair to him to have to guard the post. He's just not a 5 man. We can double the post, but we don't want to do that every possession."
"Scoring, rebounding, easy baskets, ... there's plays we just don't make because of a lack of size. You get some size, you get some rebounds, some put-backs.... things you just should get in a basketball game. We just lack that right now."
"We're disappointed, he's (Hags) disappointed. But we really didn't feel like him healthy for half a season, his senior season... he didn't feel like that. And we don't even know when he'd be 100%, so we didn't feel like it was in HIS best interest, and OUR best interest that he come back... next year he's gonna be better. He'll have a year in the system. And we've got a lot of guys that are gonna be coming back next year."
"We didn't expect to have him back (Dan), but now he's back, and he's got to get in game-shape."
"Right now when we go play power-5's, its just the lack of size that's a challenge for us.... The Mountain West isn't a Power-5, but they (CSU) are a big team. And Kansas is #1 in the country... Our guys should look forward to the opportunity."

It seems like Lee just refuses to settle for playing small-ball, and that's just fine with me. (assuming he can get some big men here, and I think he can)

More from Lee:
(on Brandon Armstrong not playing:)
"The other night he played against UMKC, played 21 minutes, and.... straight zeros across the board. *shrugs* We've got guys that have had opportunities. I've met with the group the other day, and.... I don't know if I've coached a team where there was so much opportunity to play. *chuckles* I mean, you just gotta step up and say:
"I wanna play; I'm gonna show up in practice, and kick somebody's butt, and just go play"
I've never coached a team with so much opportunity. If you want to, you could play 20-25 minutes a night, if you really wanted to.... Whether it's lack of intestinal fortitude, or just wanting to do it....
... Stan, this is really his first year of playing college basketball, but the last time we played a non-D-I, he didn't start for the next five games. Cause he didn't come out to play. Now I don't know if it's lack of experience, or whatever.
The other night against UMKC Brandon played 21 minutes and didn't do anything. Literally. I didn't think his effort was great. I'm not gonna reward that. I might as well play Nate. Now if Brandon comes back in practice, and works really hard, and competes, gets after it, he'll have opportunities to play. Everyone's gonna get opportunities to play. That was a game (UMKC) we should not have lost. And he had a great opportunity to play, and really just didn't play.... That's just not acceptable. So, might as well play someone who's hungry. Now if Nate, for whatever reason, doesn't get after it. Brandon will have opportunities if he's doing what he's supposed to do."

I hate how this team looks, but I love that Lee isn't going to pull any punches and will hold guys to a high standard.
