I'll start with the caveat that I do not like the way the whole transfer/AAU influence on commitments is progressing. Bad for the game long term, IMO. However, I think Lee has done something very smart with recruiting. Picking up top D2 freshmen vs. a talented high school recruit seems like a no-brainer. The kids in high school don't pan out at a higher rate than those that do pan out (college is a tough adjustment without even getting into the prima donna treatment they often receive in AAU). AJ and Koster have already proven a) they can make the adjustment and b) they were probably under-valued out of high school. I'd like to see the NSIC freshman of the year get an offer to come to USD almost automatically. I'm not making an AJ vs. Friedel statement, but if you could choose just one, I think you have to pick the one you already know can play and get better vs. the one you think can play and get better. Which, of course, is why grad transfers and the transfer portal have blown up. And why I started with my caveat.

This fun, isn't it? Legit great news. I guess. I just hope he is able to muster up some enthusiasm about being a yote.... Just look at that picture. A brother and sister that have grown up in a great family environment not at all afraid to show their pride. What a great family. True assets to Vermillion and USD. I love Coach P and her family.

Not much different than any other radio tease to get you to tune in or stay through the commercials and listen to the next segment isn’t exactly new.
Lee didn’t sound convinced Umude is a goner.

Wow! That's great news. Says a lot for coach Lee. Maybe the grass isn't always greener someplace else and Stanley will start a trend in favor of the mid majors.

Glad Umude realized he has an excellent situation in Verm. Imagine how much better he can get under Lee's staff.

Glad Umude realized he has an excellent situation in Verm. Imagine how much better he can get under Lee's staff. Absolutely. I think Lee seems to be very development-oriented, and Umude will have every opportunity to both get better, and to showcase his skills in this conference. That news just made my day.

This comment has me really excited:
A: It played a really, really big role. It’s a great team coming back. I’m excited for everyone coming back, but I’m also excited about the freshmen that are coming in, the recruits that we’ve got coming in. I know Richard [Polanco] is a real good player. I know Ty (Chisom) is going to bring some toughness to the team and he’s a real good player as well. And then Simeon [Jovic] and Matt [Johns] are getting a lot better, so we’re going to have a lot more pieces and a lot more people that are more confident and can really make plays for us. We’re going to be really good.

Really good interview conducted by Jay Elsen. He asked some great questions and received some interesting answers. Not often a fan gets such an in-depth view of how things play out.

That's a surprisingly candid interview. I love seeing behind the curtain, really respect that Umude was willing to be so open about the whole process.
Something very encouraging to me is that it seems the idea of leaving his family at USD pushed him to cancel the whole process. 2018-19 was far from a dream season under the new regime, but still Umude feels like he has very strong bonds with everyone.
