Question that will never be asked: "hey Stig, didn't you talk about the Roy C Davis Little Brown Jug in an interview before the South Dakota game?" His answer, probably:

Maybe we need to move on to the Old Dusty Boot?

Maybe we need to move on to the Old Dusty Boot? Or the SI play of the year award trophy? I'd rather not have Stig get his Dirty gollum clutches on it, but having us present a new traveling trophy would be somewhat embarrassing for him because of his double-down welching with the jug. Yeah, let's come up with a new one rather than waiting forever for the one that is actually owed us.

The Mount Rushmore trophy!!
Can be mounted on a piece of Rushmore granite or MR carved in the hunk of MR granite!!
Way better than a dumb border marker!

I think what would be funny is if we built a trophy case with a pedestal and lights on it where The Jug should be. And have it on display with a note inside saying SDSU won’t return it to its rightful owner. A glass encased trophy case. Shame them.

How about the " ADVISORY Council's Little Bald Jackrabbit" trophy? If anyone can figure it out, I’ll give them a virtual cookie, and a reputation point…

We have all known for years that Stig is a pile of garbage, but it is truly remarkable that he continues to top himself. We are about 2 months removed from the latest instance of him touting the trophy, with zero indication that he might dump the joose out and hand it over.
Truly a man of character.

I just don’t get the point of making the trophy known about if you have no intention of handing it over. I know in one of the interviews fron a year or two ago he had mentioned they’re still getting the scores engraved on it. So clearly according to the SDSU side it’s a traveling trophy still. SO HAND IT OVER STIG.

Bump. Apparently there is a thread on the FCS reddit trying to document all the FCS travelling trophies. Here: linkI would join the discussion, but I don't post in reddit. If anyone does, feel free to post a link to this thread, where we have collected a lot of links to relevant history of the jug. BTW, the LBJ is the oldest traveling trophy in FCS (1927). If the jug is indeed considered retired, the final date would be the last engraved score on it. I know for a fact that it has been engraved at least to 2016, and probably up to 2018, if I had to guess. The first USD win in 18 years (2019) would be the "retirement" year, when Stig decided to not exchange the trophy.

I'll add a couple of historical references to this thread: South Dakota CollegianSouth Dakota State College, Brookings, SD Thursday, Oct 18th, 1962 Vol 71 #5 (page 4) openprairie.sdstate.edu/cgi/viewcontent.cgi?article=1244&context=collegian_1969-1969South Dakota Collegian

I downloaded the newspaper PDF and clipped the image to just the LBJ article, but need to find a free image-hosting site to display it here. Here's a picture of Roy C. Davis, who was also a founding member of the Vermillion Phi Delta Theta chapter (the first USD fraternity) in 1904 or 06

The South Dakota Collegian is a good historical source, because old issues are available online. I have seen yearly articles or mentions of the jug in 1962-1964 (USD won it in 1964 - there is a picture of a pants-less SDSU student president handing over the jug), then nothing in 1965 or 1966 (Jacks won both). In 1967 the sports editor closed his article with "Let's keep that Little Brown Jug for one more year!" (Jacks won that year). In 1968 the pre-game article mentioned the jug on the line (USD won) In 1969 There was a pregame article with the Jacks SA present saying "I don't want to lose my pants!" and in the post-game paper a picture of USD SA president Jim Dunn in his boxers, shaking hands with the Jacks SA President Bob Quinn, who was holding Jim's pants.... no mention of the jug. In 1970 The post-game paper had an editorial from Jacks SA President Tom Stanton, where he mentions the humiliation of having to lose his pants in front of hostile fans ... no mention of the jug. - So my take is that the jug was a big deal from 1927- to the early 60's. Then was still exchanged into the late 60's, but was less prominent. 1968 was the last mention of the jug I can find in this newspaper, with none between then and 1970. I don't know much after that, but it wouldn't surprise me if it was forgotten for thirty years, only to resurface in 2000 when Stig had his players go to Vermillion after the game to retrieve it? Here's all the archived papers if anyone wants to do more research: openprairie.sdstate.edu/communities.html
