Doubleheader against Denver today. Denver comes in at 4-12 and 0-2 in Summit play after losing to NDSU and UND at home. Their record is very bad but they've remained competitive in most of their losses.
I would say this game is as close to a "must win" game as you can have at this point in the season. We have lost 4 straight to a group of average-to-bad teams, and haven't looked good at all since the first half of that Cal Baptist game back on November 27. This team needs to win today and build on it. I don't care how we get the win, so long as we get it.
I've said it multiple times, but that team we had in Hawaii would easily be Summit League favorites. Let's check in on our competition from that tournament:
The road to getting back to that level of play starts with a win today. One step at a time. I know we've got the talent, just got to put it back together.

I could not agree more that we are a much better team than how we're playing right now...and we MUST win today. It's a bad situation to be in but we have no one to blame but ourselves for being in this spot. Granted, we've had some unfortunate injuries, but that's no excuse at this point.

Off to a quick 10-2 start with Kelley hitting two 3s.
In the pregame Joe said the only Coyote unavailable is Goodrick, who has mono.

Yotes lead 38-31 at half. Finally played a mostly consistent half of basketball. Not the prettiest, but definitely an improvement.

Simpson finding himself? He's had some great steals and just had a terrific drive to the basket through traffic (though he missed the and one).

Did they just review a foul and reverse the call? The official clearly signaled an offensive foul, then the call changed to a blocking foul after about two minutes at the monitor. Did not think you could do that.

Yotes win 80-78.
I don't care how we got it, we simply had to get one in the win column. There were some flashes of a good team in the first half. Figure out how to make that happen more often and we'll be good. Got a week to prepare for a good UNO team coming to Verm on Saturday.

I'll take the win, but I'm really unimpressed. It's hard to complain about an 80 point performance, but how we couldn't put Denver away on defense is beyond me. We're are not ready to play the states or ORU right now.

This may explain why it felt unimpressive. On the bright side, if you like watching a team regularly shoot 27 footers when they have a lead with under 10 minutes left, then this game was very impressive.

We're are not ready to play the states or ORU right now. Really hard to put a finger on exactly what's wrong right now. There are flashes of the team we saw in the first few weeks of the season and then everybody will disappear for minutes at a time. There were multiple opportunities to bury Denver today, but they were always able to creep back in. Looking at the games since UNC the rebounding has been really awful, especially on the offensive glass and the assist to field goal ratio is very poor as well. Defense has not been all that stellar either. A lot of it seems to be effort thing and I would think this senior dominated crew would want to go out with a holler. The last few minutes of this game were really ugly and I wonder if it's because the starters legs were gone. The bench played only 36 minutes total and chipped in 5 points. I would think we'll need more contributions from them in the future, although in their defense it's tough to come in for a minute or two once a half and get into any kind of rhythm. As been said, a win is a win so I guess that's at least a step in the right direction, but if the goals that were anticipated before the season began and seemed to be obtainable early on are to be realized they need to start playing up to their potential.

One thing I noticed on offense yesterday: for many (most?) possessions, the ball often only goes towards the hoop on the actual shot. It is dribbled & passed around way out by the three point line and then someone shoots. What was odd is that they are often setting high picks, but not with the intent to get dribble drive/kick out plays - but rather to shoot a three or pass to the wing. Earlier in the year there were people cutting to the hoop, the point guards where driving (Chisom would get all the way to the rim), and defenses were getting a bit out of position, which leads to much easier shots.

I’m pretty sure you just described WIU offense for the last 5 years.
