I think this thread has run its course.
Good luck to Tony, I know he was a heck of a coach here and he'll do a great job at UMary. At least I now have an NSIC team to pull for.
Mods, if you can, I think we should lock this thread down. Some laundry just doesn't need aired on a public forum.

That's a negative...if things happen in the public for those to see them...then they are free to air on a public forum. He is airing his experiences, honestly.
Not everything is sunshine and roses.

I agree with Yote53, lock or delete this discussion. Most of this discussion has served no purpose at all.
Tony - I wish you well at Mary. Thanks for your service to USD.

I agree with the others. This thread serves no purpose except to undermine the path our football program is attempting to take. If you want to bash the coaches, or Ed himself, then start another thread elsewhere.
Tony is a great guy. It is our loss. Period. That being said, lets move on and get ready for 2011 football.

sorry, this thread stays open for freedom of speech. These coaches set this forth themselves.
On that note, Spencer is a big loss this close to the season. He definitely will be missed not just with the OL, but with the running game and pass protection of course. Three major aspects of the game that have to be filled with a month before camp. The U of Mary is getting a good coach.

I respect Coach Meierkort and the staff at USD. I love The University of South Dakota and I think that Coach Spencer will be greatly missed. He is a GREAT coach and his players love him... DOLA (USD players know what this means)
Do not forget the state of the program before Coach M got here in 2004. If anyone thinks that they know my thoughts or opinions, please verify with me prior to posting.

Tyler,
I talked to a buddy of mine that used to play for USD and his daughter worked at USD and you supposedly worked for her, and he says that he is still waiting for some sort of response to an email he sent you a few years back? Is that possible?
Now Tyler, do the fans on this board a favor, and explain how the players truly feel about Coach Ed and the rest of the staff. You played for them and can answer this question as well as anyone.
Tyler, you have 2 things to do now. #1.) Reply to my buddy that is eagerly awaiting a response overdue from you, and #2.) Tell the fans the truth about the coaching staff/players relationship.
Take care buddy. The next time our paths cross in Sioux Falls I'll disclose who I am.

The USD Athletic Program as a whole and the FB team in particular are in as good of condition as they have ever been. (leadership, resources etc.)
The fan support is a glaring weakness. I am constantly shocked by the lack of pride many alumni have in the University of South Dakota.
SDSU's fans are much much much more passionate about their University and Athletic Department. That is why Scheels in SF looks like SDSU tailgate party with all their gear displayed. It is also why they have a dedicated beat writer. This is not a conspiracy against USD - it is the economics behind how weak the USD fan base is.
While the athletic programs are not perfect, there is more than enough to cheer for and be excited about if you are paying attention. The athletes/coaches/administrators will be in a position to compete with SDSU and the rest of the Summit/MVFC. Unfortunately, I am not optimistic regarding fan interest taking off in a like manner Hope I am wrong.

Thank you Tyler for posting, I have ALWAYS respected your opinion. Sign up man, you would be a huge asset to the board to to set things straight. I was very surprised to see your name mentioned because I thought you and Ed were and still are friends.
I agree with Concerned Yote, the fan base is lacking and seems apathetic to go to the games, especially the students. There are some big time games as the Dome this year and it will be interesting to see how well attended they are. I am trying to work out my schedule to get to a couple of games this year, which is different for me because I am usually at every game...

Heard my name was mentioned on here and wanted to clear things up. Former Yote Special Teamer, you are entitled to your own opinion, but please do not speak for me - especially by name dropping and then leaving yourself anonymous. You are entitled to your own opinion, but not mine.
USD is losing a great coach and person in TS. As a defensive player, I didn't interact much with him in his coaching capacity, but I do know his players were always well coached, they always played hard, and they seemed to have a great deal of loyalty to TS. As a person, I got to know him more over the last few years and have respect for him and what he stood for.
As for Ed, he turned the program that I entered in 2002 around. I have all the respect in the world for what he came in and did. I know of some of my teammates, who ended up being great players, that were on the brink of quitting at the time Ed arrived on campus. Those players stayed on to win many games wearing RED. I heard it said many times in my 3 seasons under Ed that he made football fun for us again.
I always thought of Ed as a players coach. During the years I was there, I felt that I was treated fairly and that the players around me were as well. That seemed to be the consensus opinion. Ed is about winning football games and the best players, from what I could tell, always seemed to be the players playing and not whining about other things. With 100 guys on the roster, I am sure some didn't feel they were treated fairly, but it is impossible to keep that many 18-22 year olds happy. Not everyone can play as much as they would like or get as large of a scholarship as they think they deserve, and in college football, a team is often full of guys who think they should play every snap, get the ball on every play, and get a full ride.
I cannot speak on what coaching under Ed is like, but remember, coaches have come and gone, but the program has remained competitive. That speaks volumes about Ed's ability. We have transitioned from DII to DI and are now playing better teams, with better athletes, and with better coaches. There have been some bumps, but as a whole, I think the program is healthy. We must remember that we are not even a playoff eligible FCS school yet. I, like most of you, will not accept losing to teams we shouldn't lose too, but I also have reasonable expectations about where we have come from and where we are headed.
In short, I have respect for Ed and the staff at USD. It appears to me that TS left for what he perceives to be a better opportunity for him in the long run. That seems to me to be quite logical.

Matt, thanks for your comment. I was very surprised when I saw your name on there. I like hearing from the ex-players and current players on their thoughts on the coaches. Keep it coming guys. I think this is great discussion right before the start of the football season.

Ex-players commenting, maybe. Current players posting, heck no. We don't need that. You don't talk about coaches in public forums like this.
Tyler has been out of the program long enough that he should be able to comment on this subject and he didn't hide behind an alias and put his name on it. That says a lot about him. That said, I don't really like some of this subject material. Like a previous post said, there are 100 guys on a roster, every one of them the "star" at their high school and there is bound to be bad feelings about playing time, etc. It is impossible to keep everyone happy.
Every teammate knows not to put out in public stuff that goes on in the locker room. This subject matter is the same thing. Nothing good can come from it and it should be left alone.
