We’re now ranked 15th by STATS and 21st in the coaches poll. Still some respect to earn! That's probably about right. It's pretty unreasonable to think we would jump any higher than that. I've said for years we're a top 25 program. The problem is at least 5 teams in our conference are better than us week in and week out and we have a hard time finishing in the top half of the conference. MVFC is head and shoulders better than everyone but maybe the Big Sky and possibly the Southland. I agree, and I’m glad we aren’t higher yet. I’m just saying that the players should see this and be motivated to continue climbing. We don’t want them to feel complacent. Our potential has always been to be a perennial top 25 program, but we haven’t consistently performed like that. Hopefully, we stay ranked for a very long time from here on out.

We absolutely deserve a higher ranking, but honestly it doesn't matter. Just keep taking care of business and all will be right.

*ballot. His ballot is something else. I read your comment expecting to see some incredible dancing in the comments to defend his nonsense.

We simply need to keep winning and the rankings will take care of themselves.

So I know, I know; we need to take this one game at a time, and just focus on the opponent in front of us....
and that's true for the coach and players, but we are fans. And fans get ahead of ourselves. We can't help it. So I'll ask for a little insight from the football-knowledgeable folks who have watched some of the Valley teams play this year. Which teams are good/bad matchups for us on the remaining schedule? Especially regarding the teams NOT named SDSU, Murray State, Indiana State or Western Illinois?
If there was a basement/ ceiling for us (probability-wise), I'd say:
6-5(4-4)#5/6 is now the basement 7-4(5-3)#4 the most likely 9-2(7-1)#2 the ceiling
That's a better outlook than when we started the season, basically adjusted up by one (big) win.
Here's how Massy Ratings sees our remaining schedule: W Murray State.35-14 W YSU........27-24 W @ Indiana St 31-14 L SDSU............14-31 L @ SIU......17-27 L UND........26-27 W @ Western Ill 35-17
... but this is just a computer model that doesn't look at match-ups or any level of detail like that.
How do we match up with YSU, SIU and UND?

The UND game is at home, so we better win that one. Same with YSU.
A trip to SIU sounds like a handful though.
I think winning the next 3 is going to be critical for our playoff odds, given how much more difficult the following 3 are.

Reading on X (twitter) I have seen "inferior opponents" used several times. So I looked at our opponents and their records against FCS opponents and who they have lost to. What you see below is what I saw. Subtract the losses to USD and you have a 10 - 2 record an .833 winning percentage against FCS. That does not look inferior to me.
Murray State – Record against FCS – 2 – 1 Loss to USD NDSU - Record against FCS 4 – 1 Loss to USD Lamar - Record against FCS – 2 – 2 Loss to #3 Idaho 42 – 17 Loss to USD 35 - 6 St. Thomas – Record against FCS – 2 -2 Loss to #23 Harvard 45 -13, Loss to USD 24 – 0
Overall FCS record of opponents: 10 – 6 Subtract USD losses their record is 10 – 2 against FCS

The MVFC is so far ahead of every other conference except maybe the Big Sky in terms of talent that they could almost be a separate division. I like the combined record stat later in the season and we've had a few weeks of conference play, just not yet. It happens every year, some team will go undefeated in the Patriot League, Ivy, etc then come to the Dakotas or Montana and get beat by 30 in the playoffs. We've definitely beat good teams, but let's not get ahead of ourselves here.

I'm glad we are finally leaning towards that direction too. No need to play more top FCS teams in the OOC when you get to play all you can handle in the MVFC.

This week will be a good litmus test of where we are. I think their arguments are fair. Outside of NDSU, we played teams we should beat handily. Thankfully we did. That being said, I think the Jacks hang 70 on that Murray State team.

FCS playoff committee currently ranks us 4. Great, but talk is cheap. Just win.
