My take on this game I feel is different than most on here. Giving up a big lead can be frustrating but YSU also has schlorship players and they aren’t a bad team. But every break on earth went the Penguins way. Every close call went their way. We recover a fumble then fumble it back. Galbreath makes a big catch then fumbles it after a big gain. We drop a 85 yard pick six opportunity with a dropped gimme. We hit their QB as he releases the ball and somehow we didn’t get the interception and their receiver makes the catch. For me, when you win a game against a good opponent and you don’t catch a break the whole game, that shows me we have character. There’s absolutely nothing wrong getting a W in such games. I’m proud of this team. We’re not great but we’re pretty damn good. Think of how far we came in one year. We have some players This was the take from our group too. Down to the 4th string RB, missing the 2nd WR, and still put 34 on the scoreboard. All those plays - they weren't even 50/50, but 20/80 - that all bounced YSU's way but the D didn't get completely deflated (fans might have though). There are some very difficult games left on the schedule, and an L against YSU makes the path to playoffs questionable. Now the Yotes are in a position to start thinking about a seed. What a difference a year makes.

I just saw the final attendance numbers........ Wow. That's embarrassing. I get that it wasn't a rivalry game, but it was a hugely important game. One of the most important home games in the last few years at least. I've been better this year about dragging casuals from SF along to the games, but even if we all do that it won't be enough to make a difference. There needs to be a fundamental attitude change in Coyote Nation. I've been guilty of it as well, being apathetic during the last month of a season that can't end soon enough. We are winning games this year. We are in contention for the conference. We have a realistic shot at a playoff seed and home games in the post season. So, what will it take to get people to show up? Would a national championship do it? I honestly don't know.
Thank you to everyone that was there yesterday. The crowd was small but mighty.

We had an error in our attendance reporting system yesterday. Official attendance was 5,397. Still not where we want to be, but we thought it was important to clarify. The boxscore will be updated today.

Does that include the tickets that were sold/given away to Vermillion residents? The section I was sitting in was “sold out” online. We were on an island of open seats…

I too am baffled by low attendance for this game. Might have just been a weird weekend. For me, I had my kid’s first birthday party. I guess I wasn’t considering the football schedule mid-January 2022. lol

There are certain sections that have holds for extra staff, recruit, student-athlete family, etc. Those do not show up as green dots on the seat map.

I love the Coyotes to death and I’ll back the administration so long as they attempt to resolve this issue but misreporting attendance is a vice if mine. It is what it is. And there were not 5397 people at the game. In fact I doubt if there was 3600 as reported.
fightsd is correct. I have been fighting to change culture a long time. Apathy rules the day. When you can get 6000-7000 fans to Wichita to watch a women’s basketball game there’s no solid reason you can’t for football at home. Until that culture changes I truly believe winning a lot would help but the first time they dropped a couple of games we’d go right back.
For years I’m like a kid before Christmas especially leading up to a home game. The tailgates are fantastic. Our group ( the red bus ) has openly invited anyone that wants to come. Plenty of food, tailgate bar with bloody Mary’s, soda, water, etc. Large TV playing with games on. Good people enjoying each others company. And we love having new fans come. Parents of players have started coming. It’s just a BLAST.
This squad is good. Are they great? Not sure, but they’re very good. I can tell you the culture in the locker room is changing. In fact it has changed. They have a winning mindset, and that was on full display yesterday. They DID NOT BUCKLE when they got punched. Last year we took a lead into half against NDSU. We got punched right way in the 2nd half and folded. Done. Fight left.
I’ve said it a ton to the point people argued, and I get it, but someone or something has to start the change. I think the kids attitude has done that. Now we need to follow their lead. Going back to the womens Sweet 16 matchup against Michigan in 2022. Coyote Nation damn near willed them to victory. As a player there’s nothing like the roar of the crowd to throw gas on the fire, and as an opponent there’s nothing more intimidating than our Dome when it’s on fire.
If we could get just 7500 people to mark down home game dates on their calendar and treat it as a day of anticipation and entertainment, we could change it quickly like a light switch. And at $25 a ticket ( price per game if you buy season tickets ) it’s a bargain.
The staff changes Coach Nielsen has made has been nothing short of phenomenal. From skill sets to mind sets, this staff has been remarkable. Play calling, offensive line play, and mental approach is like night and day to last year. Our recruiting has improved drastically and kids in from the portal have been great. We just need to continue it. We’ve had recruits here the past 2 weeks that never would’ve looked at USD in the past. Even they are sensing something really special could be happening.
I love this place. It’s special. It’s time to keep getting better and contend for conference and Natty championships. It can and will be done

I agree. Love home games and never miss one. We usually try to make it to one road game each year also. My group has a great tailgate every week and we always try to get more people to join us. We'll keep trying.
On a different note I heard yesterday that Nate Thomas got himself into a little off field trouble, so that is likely why he hasn't been playing the last couple games. Hopefully he gets out of the doghouse soon.

If that’s true, then it’s best to let the coaches/team handle it inside the locker room.

This is a very good USD team and I could not be more proud of their resilience and fortitude to close out the game yesterday against a very tough and determined YSU team. I also admire Coach Bob for having the courage to make changes to his staff. Those changes have made an incredible difference. Football is a game of trying to gain a numbers advantage at the point of attack. Our new OC has been effective using formations, presnap and postsnap movement to put our players in a position to have a numbers advantage. The results are evident. Our OL coach came in and instilled a mindset of being violent. That has also shown up on the tape. They are playing their asses off.
In regards to the number of people in the stands. I have literally had sleepless nights over this topic. I have come to the conclusion that we should turn our focus on the people in the stands versus the people not in the stadium. Make the environment as fun as possible, an event that leaves people wanting more. In my opinion, that will give us the best chance of growing our fan base.
The players are doing their part and delivering the performance on the field. My message to the players would be the following: Right now the stadium may not be filled with people in every seat. Make no mistake though - the people that are there, love you, love the University, and have your backs 100%. As players in this program, you are building something and should have great pride in - building not just a good season, but a program that can sustain success.
The core people are showing up and will continue to. The rest will be the followers jumping on the bandwagon. What our program needs to be sure they do is when those casual band wagon fans do show up - do not miss the opportunity to make sure the game day is something they remember and have a blast at. Give them a reason to return.
I believe in this program and what it can be. This program needs an AD now - not after the first of the year. The talk that we can't find anyone good until then is bullshit and a strategic error.
Yesterday was a great day and another step forward. I believe. I hope you believe. Spread the word!

What is Theis' status? We have a really good stable of running backs, but let's be honest, he's the main stud. If he's just a little banged up I can see dressing him to play next week, but trying not to unless it's necessary. We're DEFINITELY going to need him 2 weeks from now.

I know winning always helps attendance, but like others have said, there is more to it. I am not sure if it is culture or what, but something is missing. Somehow SDSU has turned football games into events where 18,000+ show up for virtually every game. I have been to a couple of USD games at SDSU and the overall experience (parking, concessions, harsh weather later in the year, game production, etc) is at best equal to that at USD and is some instances substandard to that at USD, but yet they pack them in and we don't
I know the purpose of institutional advertising isn't to put butts in the seats at athletic events, but I don think our lack of institutional advertising plays a part in our attendance woes. You watch any state sponsored high school championship on TV, you always see multiple SDSU ads and zero USD ads. If you use the SD Scores ap to follow SD high school FB, VB & BB, SDSU ads always pop up and zero USD ads.

Our RB group is loaded and they all have different aspects that make them good players for certain situations. Theis is the best all around back and catches the ball allowing the ball to get outside on a quick hitter rather than banging into a wall every time. He has a good low center of gravity that makes him hard to take down and get a few extra yards after contact. I like the 2 back sets at time with him and Thomas. Theis is an unselfish player and has no problem being the lead blocker. Those are the players that matter in the locker room that are so important for a team. Mansaray is also a good overall back and returner but has not seen the field much this season. The dude is also yoked. Charles Pierre really has gained my respect the way he runs hard and has a good knack to find the hole. He has the speed to get to the second level as well. If Keyondray Jones is not the fastest player on the squad he is near the top. He is a small back but is explosive and adds a wrinkle a few times a game that helps spread the field. LJ Phillipsa True freshman saw a bit of time and looked capable. Nate Thomas. This is the best pure rusher the Yotes have and has the ability to be special. His lower level power and ability to run through contact is elite. He will be a key to the Yotes success versus teams with stout interior defenses.
