Ask this question, could you see the Summit raiding another conference for members? No. No way nobody would move into it from another D1 conference. Could you see the Big Sky raiding a conference for members? I just did, that just happened. And yes, I could most certainly see that happening. Without a doubt I could see that happening. If I woke up tomorrow and heard The Summit League created a football league because they got the MVFC conference schools from the Dakotas along with Villanova and Appy State and UNO's football program coming back, I would be surprised, but not shocked. Why, because with what's going on right now, I can see any conference raiding any other conference. I could see the Sun Belt raiding the Big 12 for Baylor. I could see the PAC 12 raiding the Big 12 for Colorado....OH WAIT, that happened. Honestly, when the Big 10 started looked at RUTGERS and SYRACUSE just because of the New York market, that ended it. It's no longer about the quality of team you get all of the of time, but where are they located, as well. This isn't over, and in five years I could see a world where the Big Sky doesn't even exist. Do I think it will happen? No, but it's definitely not hard to come up with in this massively changing college landscape.

You do realize that for a school to have a shot at the Big Ten that school must be worth over $23 million in TV revenue per year or it is a net loss to the existing Big Ten schools as it shrinks the pie? The B1G is not bringing in schools just to put them on welfare. Only two schools can bring that, Notre Dame and Texas. Texas refuses to give up the LHN, that is why the PAC 12 decided against expansion, they won't take the rest of the schools without Texas. Texas won't be offered by the B1G for that reason as well, the B1G won't allow them to keep the LHN. If Notre Dame came into the B1G then I could see a school like Mizzou getting in to balance things out. If ND doesn't join the B1G won't expand and will stay at 12, they won't go to 16 for the sake of 16 because it dilutes the shares.
UNI isn't on any BCS conference radar, much less the B1G, heck, ISU is about 15 down on the list with no shot.
Oklahoma didn't pass on the PAC, the PAC passed on OU. See what I wrote about Texas.
As far as movement down a level. I have heard rumblings about Idaho and possibly Wyoming dropping down to FCS and joining the BSC, not of their own doing. They may have no choice if the WAC disintegrates and the MWC doesn't offer them a slot.

Movement in BCS football conferences, mainly the Big East, is what I follow because that will have an effect on the basketball side of their conference. If the Big East goes after Butler, Xavier, and some other schools, that trickles down to other conferences raiding the Summit for schools like Oakland and ORU.
The only school I see the Summit able to pull away from another conference is UND. That is if, and only if, one of the eastern MVFC schools (YSU) leaves the football conference and a slot opens up to invite UND football, then UND would be, maybe, open to joining the Summit.

Is Indiana worth 23 mill, or Northwestern? Not a chance...they can make more with expansion, which is why it happened in the first place. If you can't envision it right now, well, you haven't been paying attention. In terms of Baylor to the Sunbelt...ummmmmmm yes, I can see it. See the above. Seriously, I could see football conferences with 20 teams with the way things are going. If there is money involved, they will do it. Ask the Fiesta Bowl.

You are basing the desire for expansion on increasing the revenue overall for the conference. For the Big Three power conferences, the B1G, SEC, and PAC, where they sit right now, the addition of another school, for the sake of expansion, while it would raise the TV contract for the conference overall, would mean a net decrease in revenue for the current schools. Point is, it only works if you bring in the right school. There are very few "right" schools left.
Now the ACC, that's another story. They'll go to 16 just to protect themselves in case the SEC takes one or two of their schools, and to put the Big East out of business and dominate and own the entire east coast market.
The movement happening in the Big East is what could eventually trickle down to effect the Summit.

Paterno is freaking senile. He's waxing nostalgic about how he almost created the Eastern Conference when he was the PSU AD. The idea got shot down and it evolved into the Big East basketball conference, of which PSU applied and were denied. He's strolling down memory lane and doing the woulda, coulda, shoulda. Also, no secret he's wanted the B1G to get an eastern rival for PSU for years. JoePa needs to look at a map and realize he has a rival, Ohio State, with which they share a border with and recruit the same territories. Just because he can't beat OSU. You never saw Iowa b!tching about being the western outpost to the conference all those years, you don't see Nebraska complaining now.
And, c'mon man, it's a Bleacher Report article.

Cmon man - its a message board. Hey I never said it would happen.
Completely unrelated, but I would love to see a conference boot a team, for example the Big 12 showing the Longhorns the exit door.

I know. I just tire of JoePa.
Running Texas would be the best thing for the Big 12 in the long run. They'd never do it though.

Remember when the Big 12 was one of those powers and then it crumbled? Was Colorado the "right fit" for the Pac 12? I mean seriously, it's Colorado, so it's not always about the right fit, but also the money it brings in. 16 teams can draw more money.

Colorado fits the PAC 12 perfectly. The state is full of California transplants, the campus is liberal, the academia feels a better fit with PAC schools, mountain time zone. The PAC is a surf or ski conference, brah. Colorado definitely has some powder. www.themercury.com/K-StateSports/article.aspx?articleId=3d2af06db8284de69292e4bd5d8d69a2Nice inside article on the formation of the Big 12. Texas was looking at the PAC 20 years ago. The Big 12 sowed the seeds of their problems at the foundation of the conference. They capitulated to Texas way too much.

Colorado doesn't bring any money into the conference, though, from what you were saying. There a team that doesn't compete and is lower on the chains then anything. Utah was the right fit, Colorado was just a regional fit. They actually bring the conference down. Yes, they have a good fan base, but without the Nebraska rivalry...what exciting game do they bring again?
I love how you just discount this all, but the minute you think this is over, it starts up again. This is just hilarious how ignorant it is to think it's over in certain conferences.

Oh. It's not over. There will still be movement in the Big East and ACC that trickles down. Appears crisis averted for the Big 12 for now.

For football the Missouri Valley Football Conference is a good place for the Coyotes. The Yotes went from an unknown to a legit MVFC member by winning 2 games. Minnesota and Eastern Washington. Now it's time to pick up a few more of the middle of the road wins.
I maintain that the Big Sky would have been a better competitive conference than the Summit in all other sports considering the name recognition of the Big Sky vs the Summit. If the eastern Summit schools, Oakland, IUPUI, IFPW would bolt and closer rivals replace them it wouldn't be a horrible thing but who those closer rivals would be would be the big question. UND would certainly be option #1 but after that I am not so sure. The Summit could very well be the rebirth of the NCC west. If conferences were to truley expand would the Missouri Valley all sports conference considering taking NDSU, SDSU, UND and USD all together as a package and a western front to their footprint. I believe in time all 4 Dak's could be and would be competitive in all sports to the current MV schools.
