I have a question for everyone...when listening to the NCAA experts, when do they ever talk about the Big Sky teams in the Big Dance, because I NEVER hear it. It always seems that most of the time a Summit team is in, they are considered an upset bid and a team to look for, from NDSU to Oakland to Oral Roberts. I never, ever hear that about a Big Sky school, ever, nor have I ever considered picking a Big Sky school. Just saying, I think that shows that the Big Sky has football, but what else do they have, really? Basketball is below the Summit League, in both women's and men's. The Summit League is stronger in volleyball, too, from what I hear and from Kelli Fiegen going to an Olympic team.
I think it's the "what could've been" syndrome. The Big Sky looks great, but just for football and just for it's name. After that, it's below the Summit.

I work with a Montana grad for whom there is football season and not football season. The other sports exist but I'm not sure anyone realizes it. I do recall a couple of pretty good basketball years for Montana a few years ago. It was during the time that Spearfish native Matt Martin played for them. I don't know how much he was the catalyst for the team but they did have some successful seasons. When I ask my co-worker about women's basketball, she simply doesn't know.

With the news of Oral Roberts exploring their conference options with the Southland it's never too early to look towards the future. If the Eastern Summit teams bolt South Dakota will be forced to look at their options. Since the Big Sky has already made it clear that they will consider explanding as far east as the Dakotas I thought of a possible senario for the future if leagues go toward the mega-league option. Lets assume the WAC and Summit both dispand because of heavy losses.
Here is a 16 team Big Sky that could work. There would be two divisions in this senario.
Big Sky East
South Dakota SDSU UND NDSU UNO UNC Montana Montana State
Big Sky West
Weber State Northern Arizona Eastern Washington Portland State Idaho State Sacramento State Utah State Idaho
The only complication would be in football with Utah State and Idaho currently being in the FBS.
Each division would play every team home and home every year in basketball. There would also be 6-8 cross divisions games played every year as well on a rotating basis. For the Dakota's that would mean making a trip once a year to the Montana's, one trip to UNC paired with another western school, and another trip to two western schools as well.
Of course there is always the Missouri Valley option but IMO getting a full invite to the Valley might be tougher at this point than working something out with the Big Sky. Of course this isn't happening in the present but hopefully these types of senarios are being discussed because it's never a bad thing to be prepared for any and all senarios that may come about.

Some rumblings that the Big Sky is having buyer's remorse regarding UND: www.grandforksherald.com/event/article/id/225128/I don't blame the BSC, as really what does UND add other than a significant amount of travel? Do Sioux fans really believe that Weber State fans are circling their calendars for when the Sioux come to town? Do students considering Idaho State really think to themselves, "Wow, our women's soccer team plays North Dakota so Idaho State must really be a strong academic institution"? On the other hand UND would be in dire straits if they messed up their Big Sky invite. As I've stated before I am very happy that USD is not going to the Big Sky. However, at this point it is UND's only option and if this fell through they would really be in a pickle. They are clearly on the low end of the situation--the Big Sky doesn't need UND, but UND clearly needs the Big Sky at this point.

Huh, that's funny about the travel being a concern for the Big Sky schools when there have been posters on her that have claimed travel would have never been a problem for USD ... I know the nickname has a lot to do with the UND stuff, but if they aren't getting excited about UND, what makes you think they will be excited about Weber State?
Oh, and if USD fans aren't excited about Oral Roberts, think they will be excited for Weber State?
