Anyone know if Dante still has a cast on his hand and if he has practiced at all so far this week? Here is the "off the record" line. Dante did practice yesterday, and I would assume without a cast. There is still swelling in the right hand, but apparently he threw the ball pretty effectively in practice. Pain was manageable. My guess is he'll go, but Josh had a great week with the #1 unit, so either way, I think we'll be covered.

I like VanderMaten's accuracy. I think we are fine either way. The keys are going to be to run the football and pay great D. I think we do both at home.

What an incredibly physical game. It took everything the Yotes had to finish that one off. Great job. Was really impressed with SUU - they came in and played a great game. SD just played better.
If every home game could have that atmosphere it would be an even bigger home field advantage for the Yotes. Really enjoyed watching that one.

The video broadcast is pathetic. I have too many gripes to go into, but for one.... Do you think it would be terribly difficult to update the graphics so instead of "Home" and "Visitor"' it might say something like Coyotes and Thunderbirds or "South Dakota" and "Southern Utah"? Good god it's painful.
On one series, I think it was right before the half when SUU was in the red zone, SUU was almost ready to snap the ball and we were still seeing shots of the crowd. I'm not one to scream at the screen, but I almost blew a nut on that one.
But on a brighter note, I'm very happy about this team. Two years ago we could not manage to win a close game. Good job Coyotes!

Very nice game by the yotes. It looks like the student section took a page out of Wisconsin's book by having all the students jump up and down all at once to the music. Very energizing environment. The tailgating continues to get bigger and the crowd overall was loud but faded a bit after the first half. They picked it up again towards the end when the Yotes needed it.
Southern Utah got away with some major holding calls that nearly allowed them to stay in the game long enough to pull it out but the Yotes were just too much and wouldn't allow it to slip away. Overall the Yotes did most things well lead by the defense that once again took away the run and made S Utah one dimentional. I continue to be pleasantly surprised by the defense this year. Meierkort does deserve credit for the defensive unit especially since the D-Coordinator position had question coming into the season. I have never seen a Coyote D play the pass as effectively as I have seen this year. It's nearly impossible to completely shut down a passing attack but the Yotes are containing well.
The offense is average in my opinion. I don't see why Sims isn't taking 80% of the carries because he is definately above Ganious at this point. He is slowly but surely taking over as the primary back so we are headed in his direction quickly.
The Yotes still have a tendency to be too predictable on offense. Why Will Powell doesn't get targeted a minimum of 10 times per game is beyond me. He needs the ball. I don't see how there isn't a place somewhere in the NFL for the kidd. I would like to see the Yotes run from the spread more often. They lineup in the power formation alot and it tends to be predictable. Luckily USD was able to wear out the Thunderbirds defense. The time of possession was 37-22 so very nice there.
One thing that was similar between this game and E-Wash is that in both games the Yotes pretty much completely took away any chance of a running game. Looking up at the scoreboard shows that the Yotes are well balances between passing and running yards and the opponent is completely lopsided. Most of the time a balanced team will come out on top.
I have also been more and more impressed with Robb. He is drilling his field goals and starting to get more depth on his kickoffs.
So other than some predictable play calling I could not see a whole lot wrong in the performance today. Now the biggest question of them all arises. Can the Coyotes take their game effectively on the road? It's alot easier for the defense to play with energy at the friendly confines than it is in enemy territory.

Had a blast in Vermillion yesterday and managed to share a beer with a few of you as well on a great D-Days. Just a few quick observations:
1.) The officiating was horrendous. I have never seen so many blatantly obvious holding violations go uncalled in a college football game. That officiating crew was disorganized, mis-spotted the ball, and flat out missed calls all day long. 2.) The crowd was great and made it over 10,000 for a change. Loved the idea of crowning the D-Days royalty at half-time. It not only led to a HUGE student section and better turnout all around, but it kept students in the student section longer than normal.
3.) Saw a lot of former athletes back yesterday. More than normal in fact. That was great. Every one of them I spoke with that had not been back in a while said one common thing..."I feel cheated that we didn't have this when I was a student." They all said they'd be coming back too. Made my heart kinda swell up. =)
Things are turning around in Vermillion and USD is finally righting the ship.
Can someone post the link of Will Powell's Sports Center highlight? Good grief, after 10 minutes I concluded their web-site has far too much going on for me to find it. Thanks.

What a fantastic day yesterday in Vermillion. So many positive things happened that made it a great game day experience.
1.) The tailgate section was unbelievable. Have you ever seen so many people outside the Dome 3 hours + before the game? The crowd was pumped, and the good Lord provided us with a perfect weather day. The rain held off, good breeze, and no really hot sun to contend with. Just awesome. So many people were tailgating it was fantastic. I had several people say..."this is a blast. I would like to do this more than once a year."
2.) Our team is a complete team, win or lose. Last year in order for us to win, we were one dimensional. We had to outscore the opponent or we were in trouble. Not this year. Our defense is pretty darned good. And our D-line, which I was very critical of last year, is playing at a very high rate. Tyler Starr is a fricking animal, and he has changed the dimension of this team.
3.) The Dome was full. I believe the final unsold total of tickets was less than 200. Although a sellout is desireable, this is a step in the right direction. KUDOS to the students who were freaking awesome. They keep those guys pumped up, and it appeared they all had a great time. The post game parties appeared to be alot of fun as well. The "adults" FINALLY got into the game as they influenced some false starts against SUU. Now if we can just do it every game, and make the Dome a complete hated place to play in, that is good for our team.
To all the guys that came back for the fIrst time in ages, all I can say is WELCOME BACK. Now, get used to coming back for each home game, buy tickets, and donate some money to a program that gave us so many opportunities.
David Sayler.........good job man. It's coming together.
USD Football team.....keep it up and enjoy it for what it is. You are on the brink of turning this thing around and making us someone to contend with. Great job guys.
Students.......High five to all of you. You were difference makers.
What a great D-Days

yoteforever,
good comments. I had chills run down my spine a few times on Saturday just to live an atmosphere I was unsure was possible in and around the era of as recent as the late 90's. The whole thing is an experience that is not to be missed and I don't partake in the liquid spirits part of the celebration. I think anyone that was around during some of the real dark days of Coyote Football had a major appreciation for what we had on Saturday.
The tailgating was great no doubt but nothing beats just sitting in my seat and seeing a fully packed dome that is completely cheering their butts off during much of the game. I have always loved the band and get chills listening to the pregame performance to take away the last few minutes before gametime. I like the music they play and love the 3rd down intro that they do combined with the dinging bell that gets the crowd into it on 3rd down's on defense. Just great. The home magic is back as far as creating a near impossible situation for the opponent.
I do agree with you on your thoughts of Tyler Starr. Assuming he continues what he is doing now and continues to improve and retains his health there is no reason he can't go down as the best defensive player in Coyotes history. Having him being able to pressure as he does probably allows 1 to 2 players on average be able to drop back and give numbers to other areas of the field that are needed.
I love the momentum but I do want to play a bit of devils advocate as well. USD is going to need to be consistantly better on offense for the team to pull out these types of games on the road. We are going to need to have a more reliable passing game if things start to get bottled up with the run. I also believe we need to spread out the field on more plays and run out of it. Will Powell is such as asset, so lets get him the ball more often. What happened to Williams. He has barely touched the ball this year and I figured he would be a more intrigel part of the offense. The play calling has been up and down but what worries me is that when things tend to get tight USD goes into a shell and I think they did this for awhile in the S. Utah game. On the road USD's defense typically doesn't play as well and with a home field advantage such as the dome it's a no wonder. I don't want to be too critical but I see some things that could end up costing USD these games down the line.
UND is still a +1 in the conference meaning they have one road win with no home losses. Even if UND splits the next two conference games USD will likely have to beat UND in Grand Forks to win a share or an outright conference title. We know that is a very tough task and one that hasn't happened in years. They are a major nemesis to the Yotes when the two teams play in Grand Forks.
Great momentum, great playing at home and the team has definately turned it around from where last season left off. The tough part is still to come so the Yotes can't afford to celebrate too much because beating the T-Birds was a must win. Now comes the hard part.
