Obviously I have been under attack from many members of the board as of late. I think it's unfair to attack me personally when I never attacked any of you personally. I make strong options and I realise that. Due to what has been going on lately I just want to make a statement on where I stand on things so I don't have to continually defend myself over and over.
1) Lets act like adults
I respect everyones opinion on this board and I expect the same in return. If you don't agree with something I say than ask me to clarify something or further devulge into something and I will be more than willing to explain myself or take the time to talk with any one of you if that is needed. I enjoy the board as a debating tool. We are supposed to go back and forth on topics. We are supposed to disagree on things or there would be no need for public forums. What I don't want is to be blatently personally attacked by an individual(s) when I didn't do anything to provoke a personal attack by personally attacking someone else. I really don't want this to be about me but when I am being constantly attacked I have no choice but to defend myself.
2) My expectation of the Coyote Athletic Program
I have expectations and IMO every good fan should have expectations as well. If the fan base doesn't have them and doesn't have some sense of holding the athletic department accountable than the athletic department will have no reason to improve. I suggest to anyone that if you disagree with something let it be known. If you agree with something let it be known.
My personal expectations of the Coyote Athletics are fairly simple and to the point.
I expect the Coyote athletic department to be held to the same standards as SDSU or NDSU hold for themselves. I expect the fans of USD sports to hold their teams as accountable as SDSU fans and NDSU fans do for their teams. This isn't something I created out of the blue. USD has let it be known on multiple occassions that they consider themselves peers with both institutions. They should also expect the same types of results on the field of play as those institutions. I don't think that is such a ridiculous expectation. In not every sport will USD be better or at the same level as those schools but certainy they need to be as good or better in a fair share of sports.
I also expect USD to be competitive and sometimes win conference titles in the conferences where peers are in direct competition. USD should expect to be at the level of the Summit League programs or close to it this year and the same can be said for football in the MVFC next year. The programs have had plenty of time to prepare for it and be as ready as possibly for it. Not knowing is not an excuse. There are things that can be done beforehand to be ready such as studying film on these teams.
As fans we need to show more urgency. I hear so often for me to relax or I over reacted but instead give a program or a team more time. That is fine in some instances but I also want to hear what is this team going to do this year and more in particular today to be a good team. The more we say lets give them more time, the more we are just letting success slip through our finger tips. We are basically just about finished with transition. That time is or was supposed to be used to get ready for full fledged D1 membership.
If your expectations are lower than mine than we do not have an even baseline to argue from. I am not expecting national championships in every sports. My expectations are actually not as ridiculous as some people make them out to be. I just want to see all teams have a legitimate chance to be able to win a conference championship. Sometimes it works out and sometimes it doesn't but I want the excitment level high and expectations high that the Coyotes should win a Summit Title or GWFC title.
I also don't believe in entitlement for the most part. If an athlete is not playing well than they either should figure out why they are not and correct it or another athlete needs to be ready to take their place. That is the nature of competition. I also want coaches that are going to have their best athletes playing the most. I also would like to see every coach at USD come into a season knowing they have a good chance for a conference title or more. If you count 2 or 3 consecutive seasons where that expectation isn't reality, than it's probably time to do some serious questioning and/or soul searching.
Sports is not like other aspects of life in all ways. It is in that it builds teamwork and build a person into a better individual. We all get that but in this day and age a sense of accountability needs to be in place. Wins and losses are the ultimate measuring stick of success. Some may disagree but when it comes to decision making the first thing that is going to keep a coach in a job or out of a job is winning. Other things are important but fall under neath in most cases.
3) Objectivity
Some of you might not agree with this but I look at the big picture first and then look in on the smaller details as they come into focus. The best example is the football team. Big picture they are an average program. They basically do the same things well that they have always done and the same things poorly as they always have done. I get frustrated like anyone else and sometimes post those frustrations but in the large scope of things I look at the big picture when analysing the program and base my opinions off of that. I don't just look at one game or even one season to develop thoughts but instead off of a long series of trends.
As things stand now if you like USD to be average at football than we are right where we need to be. If you want a chance at greatness than don't expect that out of this current program. Win at home, lose on the road has always been the mantra.
I think with an open mind and I think others really need to do the same. I base many of my opinions on knowing some things by being a fan and following along and others by trying to take a step back and looking at things as an outsider would. It's usually a good idea to try to look at things from multiple perspectives. Sometimes it's a good thing to play the devils advocate.
When it comes to my postings I have taken some critisism. I have been accused of being too negative. That is fine, everyone is entitled to their opinion but I will say this. I write positive stuff as well in case someone decides to just focus on the critical posts. I will ask everyone this question. Do you reply to my positive posts as often as you reply to my negative posts. I challenge each and everyone that replies to use equal opportunity when it comes to my posts, afterall I use equal opportunity when I post. Reply to as many positives ones as negative ones and I will respect that alot more than those people that just wait for something negative to write to reply. look at it from both sides not just the perceived negative posts.
I will continue to make my posts based on the my own expectations. One thing I don't do is to rationalize losing if the losing trend is well known and has a long history of happening. Sometimes things happen to make a team not win, I get that and often times I accept that. Heck I don't beat up on the Yotes for losing to major college teams because I know the level just isn't the same. I expect our teams to come in with a winning attitude to every game but some games are understandably not likely to be wins.
When it comes to objectivity sometimes looking at everything from the inside looking out is not always the best thing. The best coaches and best athletes can evaluate themselves accurately. The best coaches have made mistakes but what makes them into great coaches is their ability to learn from their mistakes and correct them and at the same time substain the positives. Also the best coaches learn from what other great coaches have done in the past and learn bits and pieces from their own past experiences. Good coaching has as much to go with good memory as anything else.
I have decided that I am not going to leave the board afterall. I am going to fight the good fight and continue to produce more text regarding the Coyotes. I would like everyone that has been piling on as of late to release the vice grip attitude that you have been displaying towards me and just accept me for what I am.
